Students who took part in the House 2020 Future Smart House competition were challenged to provide feasible, cost-effective strategies to the increasingly relevant question, "What is smart technology now?", in designing the smart house of the future. Originating from Hong Kong-based real estate developer and designer Kin Yeung, the two-stage competition launched in summer 2014. Competing students engaged in a six-month period of discussions with experts to tackle the complex topic.
At the end of the competition, four M.Arch students at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design swept all top three winning spots:
- 1st place: Peter Kitchen for "Tranquil House"
- 2nd place: Javier Huerta-Juarez and Christopher Tron for "The Two Spaces"
- 3rd place: Nabia Majeed for "The Internet of Space"
The winning ideas could potentially lead to the construction of a working prototype by 2020 for a 16 m x 40 m suburban lot in Southern Ontario of Toronto, Canada.
1ST PLACE: "Tranquil House" by Peter Kitchen
Project info:
"Tranquil House interprets 'smart” as curated, specific and efficient. It addresses the notion of a home as a proposition about lifestyle -- a scenario that integrates passive design strategies, on-site food production, and a functional reimagining of daily activities. The emphasis is on the mechanics of domesticity."
"These ideas are reflected through the layout, dialogue and interaction between domestic activities within the home, including specifically designed green zones that house plantings within a double skin."
"Additionally, the home utilizes specific passive design strategies and on-site renewal techniques as dwelling tools to encourage interaction between individuals, and also between landscape and dwelling. Temperature, moisture, filtration, bioremediation, natural light, and exposure are addressed and help shape the mechanics of the home. Tranquil House is a working, living and breathing system."
Toronto-based design center WORKSHOP Inc. is hosting the HOUSE 2020 exhibition showcasing the Stage Two competition projects now until April 25, 2015. The exhibition is open to the public Tuesday - Saturday, 12 to 6, on the Lower Concourse at 80 Bloor Street West in Toronto.
