"The Pulp Canopy" by Katie Donahue and Mason Limke of MYKA, which won the Bigger than a Breadbox, Smaller than a Building competition, is prepping for its debut at the Bigger than a Breadbox exhibition at the Boston Society of Architects next month. Opening on June 17 in the BSA lobby, the exhibition investigates the increasingly appealing medium of installations among architects and designers. It also explores ideas that go beyond the physicality of the installation.
For the competition, participants had to reimagine a previously built installation project and build upon it to become a new proposed installation for the lobby space.
In addition to the winning proposal, the jury awarded honorable mentions to select teams, who were all invited to submit project components for the exhibition.

About The Pulp Canopy: "The Pulp Canopy investigates the use of cellulose fiber (paper pulp) in architectural application, taking into consideration that it is the most abundant raw material on the planet and has a wide array of latent material properties. Discarded paper products are collected, turned into pulp and then reformed into modules that leverage characteristics of thinness, transparency and textural variation. Pulp Canopy builds upon the work done by the earlier project The Pulp Wall, both of which entice passersby by engaging their material curiosity. Properties of paper pulp such as color and tactility can be easily varied within a cohesive systematic module, resulting in a built piece that is economical and highly site specific."
The exhibition will also showcase the works of the honorable mention teams: Michael Leighton Beaman & Zaneta Hong, Beta-Field; Catie Newel, Alibi Studio; Justin Diles; Clay Odom, StudioModo; and +FARM.
The competition jury featured:
- Benjamin Ball, Ball Nogues Studio
- Shaunna Gillies-Smith, Ground Studio
- Jenny Sabin, Jenny Sabin Studio
- Monica Ponce de Leon MPdL Studio
- Frano Violich, Kennedy & Violich Architecture
