New York-based BKSK Architects has been selected to design a new, green convent for The Community of the Holy Spirit, a contemplative order of Episcopalian nuns in New York City.

The New York Times featured the story of The Community of the Holy Spirit in an article titled “Praise the Lord and Green the Roof.”

The design for the building is inspired by the nuns’ desire to connect more profoundly with the natural world and live in an environmentally friendly manner.

Spaces are designed to inspire quiet contemplation, both individually and collectively.

The presence of natural light and falling water are brought into worship spaces as symbols of a divine presence.

The Convent will include dual rooftop gardens, rainwater collection and energy efficient heating and cooling systems.
