In February 2008, the City of Alexandria released the Call for Entries for the Contrabands and Freedmen’s Cemetery Memorial Design Competition. The City sought design submissions from architects, landscape architects, artists, students, and other interested individuals to memorialize and honor those who are buried at Contrabands and Freedmen’s Cemetery in Alexandria, Virginia. The entries were due on April 25, 2008, and the City received a broad range of submissions from individuals and firms from over 20 countries around the world.

The Freedmen’s Cemetery Steering Committee is responsible for evaluating the submissions and recommending a winner and two finalists. Public comments on the top six entries are being solicited from June 4, 2008, to June 18, 2008. These comments will assist the Steering Committee in their deliberation.

Please visit the View Finalists page to submit your comments on one or more entries.

Please visit the link to view the "Finalists". These are six of the most poorly conceived proposals that I have ever seen. They are riddled with architectural one-liners and serve only to disgrace the memory of those interred. Many of the sentences in the narratives are as poorly conceived as the design (filled with grammatical and typographical errors).

The jury should be ashamed of themselves for exploiting real designers and for not adhering to the understood competition schedule and review process.

I disagree with you completely Andrew. Each of the finalists were guided by the program and responded directly to their needs and requests. Buried in the “Call of Entries” are specific ideological and practical requests. The panel of judges that is composed of local representatives called for unambiguous solutions to their programmatic needs. Each of the finalist responded to their perceived needs.

To say that all of the entries had grammatical errors is a sweeping generalization. They are not all one liners. None disgrace the memory of those interred. The jury is late in their schedule but that’s life, choosing a winner is difficult in these situations.

Your whining stinks of jealousy, get over yourself.
