PIG Architects recently sent us the details behind their proposal of the Polish Pavilion for the major Milan EXPO 2015, which won't open until next May. The team won third place in the Polish edition of the design competition for the national pavilion.
Aside from responding to the EXPO's sustainable theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life", PIG Architects' shifting pavilion aims to present a contemporary image of Poland uniquely mixed with traditional elements.
Check it out right below.
Project description:
"Considering the character of EXPO exhibition we propose a pavilion which is a semi-open structure that is easily accessible and permeable for visitors. Its openness makes the whole ground floor flexible for arranging different events in the pavilion and in its surrounding. Our goal was to combine traditional and contemporary elements in an unusual way to design a powerful point in the EXPO exhibition."
"The main design principle in our concept is to divide the pavilion into two elements. One is a white concrete structure that contains program required by the client. The other essential element of the pavilion is the floating 'barn' that moves along the pavilion and changes the appearance of the whole structure."
"The positioning of the barn indicates in which part of the pavilion the important events are taking place. At the same time it protects visitors against the sun."
"In a simplified way, the design expresses an image of Poland, modern but strongly related to its roots and tradition. On one hand, our pavilion refers to the landscape of polish countryside and on the other it focuses on developments that took place in the past 25 years."
"Leitmotiv of the exhibition is the agricultural cycle starting from growth, harvest, food processing, consumption, waste segregation to its use in order to obtain energy."
