In announcing the winner yesterday, the governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Sérgio Cabral Filho, welcomed that the museum occupies the site of a former infamous nightclub that became an area of prostitution and drug trafficking. “I always wanted to see another function,” said the governor.

The cost of the museum project, which will include extensive external access ramps and windows showing different angles of the Copacabana beach, is estimated at 65 Million Brazilian Real (35 Million US Dollar), including 50 Million paid by the local government. The rest comes from private sponsors including the Roberto Marinho Foundation.

The new Museum of Image and Sound will occupy 4,500 m2 (48,500 sf) with rooms for permanent and temporary exhibitions, facilities for research, a panoramic restaurant, an open-air auditorium and others. Construction will take two and a half years.

The current MIS was founded in 1965 in the center of Rio. It houses 22 collections bringing together the most valuable variety (photos, posters, films, videos, newspaper clippings) to be transferred to the Copacabana.

Seven of the largest architecture firms in Brazil and the world have participated in the contest, including Brazilian practices Bernardes & Jacobsen, Isay Weinfeld, Brasil Arquitetura, and Tacoa Arquitetos and international players Diller Scofidio + Renfro (USA), Daniel Libeskind (USA), and Shigeru Ban (Japan).

No real competition for Diller Scofidio. I just can't believe what my eyes are seeing from the other contestants entries.

Thumbs up.

Libeskind's entry is positively embarrassing. What - if anything - was going through his head?

Daniel Libeskind seems determined to reduce architectural design to a few mindless and cartoonish strokes of a colored marker.

This lump could be anything, anywhere. He made no attempt to reflect the local culture or the contextual setting. (And I'm sure he did not give a moment's thought to environmental issues, even something as basic as orientation to the sun.) It is hard to imagine a more irresponsible or repellent building anywhere.

The Diller & Scirfidio is a 90's entry, they need to move on.
Bernardes & Jacobsen is the most interesting entry of the lot.

OMG!! These are AWFUL! It's like some kid was let loose with a crayon. No professionalism or sophistication anywhere.

If this is the best that "seven of the largest architecture firms in Brazil and the world" can come up with, then the world is about to get a whole loy uglier.

I give Daniel Libeskind special credit for a mindnumbingly ridiculous entry? Did he even look at the site, or the design problem?

Although the design is a rehash of their 'EyeBeam' project of a few years ago (and therefore suspect in terms of site response), DS+R had it easy given the lack of any real effort on the part of their competitors.

I'm guessing that Tacoa Arquitetos spent maybe a couple of hours on their design, mostly on the rendering.

Libeskind probably spent less, maybe fifteen minutes, tops. His design is like a poke in the eye to the people of Rio de Janeiro, Insulting, really. It's like a bad joke. It gets worse every time you hear (or see) it.

even shigeru ban is trying to do an aweful basket.... where is his elegance gone?

DS+R's scheme was the best of a bad lot. Faint praise for faint-hearted schemes.

As for Libeskind .... What was he thinking? This guy's ego and sense of himself are so far off the rails he is an embarrassment for the whole design industry.

I've never seen so many pathetic entries in a major competition.

Most look like the architects rendered the first doodle that came into their head. Libeskind's entry is a joke. He is going from bad to worse.

Apart from himself, Nina, and his staff, who does Libeskind think he's fooling?

Libeskind is so totally washed up. He's like a senile old fool trying to be cool. He just ends up looking like a bigger idiot.every time he goes public with a design.

With this lack of talent, Libeskind is no longer even a "has-been". He's becoming more of a "definite won't-be". That being said, I'm sure he has not fully plumbed the depths of his ego-driven insanity. There's plenty more crap on the boards in his office.

never knew architecture masturbation is practiced in argentina too.
we will be going cockeyed looking at these monstrosities.
that is probably what happened to the jury.

Remind me again ..... exactly when did anyone ever get the idea that Libeskind was an architect?

To Ramesh.
It's Brazil. Rio de Janeiro is in Brazil. It's like how United States is not Mexico, not Mexico.

poor entries... a shame for the location that looks pretty interesting, no one tries to create a space acording to the beach, the scale of the place, the continuity of the facade lines, nothing there.
It look like they did it in a single day, not only Libeskind, all of them.

We need to stop participating in free competitions as designers. Waste of our time and our money as a design community. Then the rest of us sit back and 'critic' the work that was not even paid for. It isn't Libeskind who has the ego.

Horrible! What do these Architects think they are doing? It seems some of them designed on gunpoint................'Design it now or die'. Suffering from identity crisis.

This merely confirms that not only is aesthetic ignorance rewarded in Libeskind's practice, but that stupidity is actually encouraged among his staff. He is a complete buffoon.

The real buffoon isn't Libeskind but Ramesh for his attempt to amuse us with his mock critique, yet he doesn't know Argentina from his arse.

As for the designs, Weinfeld's entry appeals to me the most after seeing more images...

I like Bernardes & Jacobsen the best and being they are also a Brazilian firm, this would have been especially rewarding.
