Project Description from the Architects:

A city piled high of trash, they call it ‘garbage city’ and it seems unstoppable. People started to get used to the situation which will lead to a huge trash covering the whole city and from another point, grabage can’t be moved outside the city.
The problem leads to another, as there is lots of diseases and polution.

The city is populated by a community of homeless people called Zabbaleen, As they coexist with the trash, so they collect, sort or resell Cairo’s waste.

Environment is dead in this place, the idea of reviving the environment and that will happen when we revive it’s elements (human - plants - Animals ) and provide them with the necessary power to live.

Power: Using the garbage as seeds buried undergorund and life comes out of it (bringing the good of the garbage out of it) and it will be used to generate Biogas, electricity and fertilize.

Human: changing the society point of view towards the homeless people by making them helpful and productive to the community and this will happen by rehabilitate their lives and then by giving them the opportunity to be a real humans, make them ready to lots of available jobs and works varing from farming, Animal Husbandry and workers to complete the life elements.

Horrible. Have they forgotten that the best cities are the ones with an active street life where people can interact with each other? Think of the great piazzas and streetscapes of any Italian town.

This pretentious, half-baked speculation is what gets architects a bad name. It is rooted in half-understood theories more than it acknowledges the way people actually live. Of course it doesn't help that the guys in Mekano also missed that you'll need an elevator to get into the building. Maybe in Mekano's world, it's acceptable to climb a poll to enter your home??

By isolating so many of these "pods" as unique, or semi-unique cubes, this design seems to maximize the exterior surface area of the total building volume. That sounds like a recipe for heat gain and/or heat loss. Plus, increasing exterior wall area drives up the cost of buildings (exterior walls are more costly than interior walls), So exactly how is this design even remotely practical, affordable or environmentally responsible?

How does creating pretentious archittectural garbage on stilts solve the problem of garbage on the ground?

@Angel, "street life where people can interact with each other? Think of the great piazzas and streetscapes of any Italian town"

And what century are you living in? maybe piazzas where the hub of social activity in the 18th century but certainly not today.

I'm partial to the propsal but to dismiss it for your due to your own pretentiousness, there can be no greater mistake than the hasty conclusion that a proposal is worthless because it is badly executed. I like to rob other peoples quotes and mish mash 'em into architectural one raspberry
