Since our last update, the Municipality of Plovdiv in Bulgaria recently announced Portuguese architects FORA as the official winners of the international Plovdiv Central Square Competition.
The competition pool started from 125 submitted entries from 41 countries down to three finalists. The public then had the opportunity to discuss and vote for their favorite proposal to be implemented.
Hosted by Bulgaria's largest architectural event One Architecture Week and the Municipality of Plovdiv, the competition brief sought the best architectural and landscape design solution to redevelop and revive the central square in Plovdiv. Plovdiv is built upon the remains of the ancient Roman Forum of Philippopolis and is also Bulgaria's second largest city.
The intervention comprises an area of 57.000m2, and exposes the intersection of several architectural and historical layers, from antiquity until the Socialist State.
FORA's winning scheme will be presented on October 18 during the One Architecture Week festival in Plovdiv.
