The Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) and its major partner TD Assurance Meloche Monnex announced the winners of the 25th edition of the Awards of Excellence in Architecture (Bustler previously reported on the round of award finalists). A gala evening culminated months of anticipation during which the public was invited to vote for their favorite entry among some 40 nominated projects. More than 500 people—including architects, clients and partners—gathered for the event, which was presented, exceptionally this year, as part of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s Festival of Architecture week. From June 17 to 25, CDP Capital Centre, which hosted of the ceremony, showcased the traveling exhibition “Architecture of the Moment” in the Parquet. The exhibition presented all of this year’s featured projects.

The awards announced included the Loto-Québec People’s Choice Award in which more than 5,000 members of the public cast votes by Internet and by mail; the Action Award, which showcases an architect whose work has benefited the architecture community and encouraged best practices; the Vision Award, chosen by children and youth who took part during the recent school year in the Youth and Architecture awareness program; an Award of Excellence in Sustainable Development; an Honorable Mention in Universal Accessibility; the Marcel-Parizeau Award, which honors a small budget project; the new Les Affaires Perennial Award, presented to a building of more than 25 years; and, finally, the new Norman Slater Art and Architecture Integration Award. In addition to the above, awards were presented according to project types or building categories (residential, industrial, commercial, etc.).

The featured projects distinguish themselves for the multiplicity of eco-responsible actions or interventions that they entail. A poetic address, signed by the architects, cites the visual and sensory experiences intended for the program and that were transposed in the use of space by their builders. This 2009 harvest is an invitation to discover emerging young talent, as well as a pledge of recognition to those familiar with Awards of Excellence, for the maturity and mastery of their work, a sign that their achievements are loved and appreciated.
