Results of the Remember the Triangle Fire Memorial competition

Results for the Remember the Triangle Fire Memorial design competition have been announced. The Remember the Triangle Fire Coalition hosted the competition to find the design for a permanent memorial at the site of the 1911 Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in Greenwich Village, New York.

The fire occurred on March 25, 1911 in the Asch Building (now New York University's Brown Building) and killed 146 workers, many who were young immigrant women. A great number of today's labor and fire safety laws in the U.S. were created as a result of the tragedy.

Out of 176 entries from over 30 countries, the jury chose three winners and four honorable mentions. The top three winners are:

• First place: "Reframing the Sky" by Richard Joon Yoo and Uri Wegman
• Second place: "United Ribbon" by Courtney Hunt and Alex Witko
• Third place: "Points of Light" by Carmen Potter

First-place winners Yoo and Wegman will further develop their design with members of the RTFC and NYU.

First place: "Reframing the Sky" by Richard Joon Yoo and Uri Wegman
with $5,000 prize sponsored by United College Employees of the Fashion Institute of Technology

Description:

"As envisioned, the winning design would engage passers-by both up-close and from afar.  Steel panels curve around both sides of the building, with the names of victims cut into an upper panel and reflected onto a lower one."

"A vertical mirrored panel would reflect the sky and urban environment, extending up the corner and ending abruptly at the 8th floor, where the fire started and many died.  The memorial would also include a map of where victims lived, the story of the fire, and the laws that resulted from it."

Second place: "United Ribbon" by Courtney Hunt and Alex Witko of Organelle Design
with $3,000 prize sponsored by the American Society of Safety Engineers and Fashion Institute of Technology

Third place: "Points of Light" by Carmen Potter
with $1,500 prize sponsored by the Safety Executives of New York
