RTKL, the international architecture, planning, engineering and creative services firm, is being honored for its work on two developments: Dream Mall in Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and Market Lofts in Los Angeles, California. Having earned 2008 Gold Nugget Merit Awards, each of these impressive projects possesses qualities unparalleled among peers.
At 2.5 million SF and a construction cost of more than $300 million, Dream Mall is the centerpiece of what will be a 7.4 million-SF mixed-use community. Awarded a Gold Nugget for the International Commercial/Retail Project category, Dream Mall is located in an industrial redevelopment area near the harbor and is the second-largest shopping center in Southeast Asia. Upon completion of all phases, the project will set the quality standard for future commercial development by expertly weaving together retail, entertainment, office, hotel and high-rise residential elements.
“Dream Mall redefines Kaohsiung’s economic profile,†remarks Jay Clark AIA, a Vice President in RTKL’s Los Angeles office. “Since opening, the project has vastly increased retail revenue, created thousands of new jobs, decreased unemployment rates, and helped raise land values. Dream Mall is a glowing example of how design fosters revitalization efforts and economic redevelopment.â€
Located in downtown Los Angeles, the Market Lofts plan establishes new residential loft units and apartments, incorporates a 50,000-SF grocery store, accommodates convenience-driven ground-level retail, and creates above- and below-grade parking. Accordingly, it has been awarded a Gold Nugget in the Best Mixed-Use Project category.
Daun St. Amand AIA, a Vice President in RTKL’s Los Angeles office, notes that, “Market Lofts is an integral part of the bigger picture. Along with LA Live and 717 Olympic, this project will attract people downtown and inspire an around-the-clock live/work/play environment.â€
Now in its 45th year, the Gold Nugget Awards program is the oldest and largest program of its kind. The Gold Nuggets honor creative achievements in architectural design and land use planning for residential, commercial and industrial projects. Entries come from 14 Western states and around the world.
