Taking place on the island of Sandhornøy in the Arctic Circle region of Norway, SALT will host its opening festivities this weekend, starting August 29 to September 1. Founded in 2010 by acclaimed curator Helga-Marie Nordby and cultural entrepreneur Erlend Mogård-Larsen, SALT celebrates the rarely traversed arctic landscape and promotes Norway's contributions to art and design history.

Some notable features in this weekend's events include traditionally inspired architecture designed by Rintala Eggertson Architects, as well as films, food, international musicians, artists, and various events for visitors of every age.

The SALT architectural structures will be on public display until September 2015 before beginning an international tour through the Arctic Circle.

Check out some photos of the architectural structures and details about the event below.

"Though often lost in the shuffle alongside Scandinavian neighbors (like Denmark), Norway has played an important role in art and design history, stretching back at least to late-19th Century painter Edvard Munch. During the seminal midcentury period, Norway was home to designers who won dozens of international gold design medals. Today, the country continues to spawn design leaders, like the architectural practice Snøhetta.

The weekend will provide the opportunity for visitors to explore the SALT site by day for the first time, including its stunning architectural design by Rintala Eggertsson Architects, which inspired by traditional Norwegian fiskehjeller (fish racks), will house a sauna, amphitheatre-style events space for live music, parties, talks and screenings, a restaurant and bar, and a number of small lodges, which visitors can hire to stay in on the beach."

"SALT is a unique cultural platform – creative, historical, environmental and communal – that brings together art, architecture, music and food in the Arctic landscape. SALT launches in August 2014, before spending the next few years travelling across the northernmost part of our planet, making stops in Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Ireland, Scotland, Spitsbergen, and Alaska."
