For the second year running, Seatec, the international exhibition of technologies and subcontracting for boat and ship builders, is holding “Abitare la barca”, a competition open to students from university faculties of Industrial Design, Nautical Engineering and Architecture. The students will be designing a 50ft sailing or motor boat during the exhibition itself, on 7 and 8 February 2008, in the “Agorà” area in the centre of Hall D.
“Abitare la Barca”, organised for the second year running by Seatec/Abitare il Mare, was conceived to give young designers a chance to experiment in design applied to the nautical world, in particular in terms of the division and interiors of living spaces on board.
The competition has two design sections: one for 50ft sailing boats and one for 50ft motor boats. It differs from other design competitions in that the students taking part, chosen by their universities in Milan, Rome, Florence, Genoa and Pescara, will be designing their projects actually at the exhibition in a special area at the centre of Hall D.
Following a briefing by Ivan Zignego, professor at the Faculty of Architecture in Genoa, on the morning of Thursday 7 February, the participants will proceed to create their designs which must be completed by the morning of Friday 8 February.
At 12 a.m. on 8 February a jury composed of leading authorities from the world of design, industry and academia will examine the projects.
The winning projects will be announced on Friday 8 February at 2 p.m.
Last year, in the first “Abitare la Barca” competition, first prize in the “50ft sailing boat” category went ex-aequo to Federica Ferro from Genoa University and Marco Scuderi from Pescara University while in the “50 ft motor boat” category the winner was Marino Alfani from Milan Polytechnic (faculty located in Bergamo).
A special mention was awarded to Andrea della Vecchia from Roma3 in the sailing boats category and Paolo Straziuso from Milan Polytechnic in the motor boats category.
