Six Finalists Selected for New National Museum in Oslo

In late March of 2009, the Norwegian Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs announced an open international planning and design competition to initiate the planning of a new, collective building complex to house the National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design on the site of the old Railway Station West, Vestbanen, in Oslo.

Since June, the jury has rated 237 contributions and today announced the six finalist proposals to allowed to stage 2 of the competition. The final winner will be selected from these and announced in March 2010.

The architects behind the shortlisted designs are still not made public. Also the next phase of the competition will be implemented in full anonymity as regulations require.

I'm very disappointed with the jury and the lack of variety in the shortlisted entries. Why didn't they just hire Moneo or Adjaye, instead of wasting everyone's time with a competition?

This is very disappointing. Most of these look like office buildings. I guess they were looking for a modernist style from several years ago.

It would be great if the other entrants could be allowed to post their designs. Can archinect or Bustler make a special page for this?

This competition had such complex and demanding requirements and a lot of people worked really hard on it, so it would be great to see what some of the other entrants were.

147 is probably chipperfield, and this entrant looks a lot more like his anchorage museum than the wily. but ill agree with the overall disappointment.

Considering the abysmal quality of most of the entries, I'm very pleased with the jury's selection. Urban Canvas was one of my very few favorites to begin with, and I'm sure it'll be a great contrast to both the existing Vestbanen as well as the amazing city hall. It's monolithic qualities will definitely make into an icon and a great addition to the Oslo skyline. The floors seem well organized and designed as well, with good circulation.

I really hope this will get built!

They all appear to be "inspired by" starchitects.

The first is clearly "referencing" the Wyly

The second is, perhaps, Allied Works "inspired".

The third is the most interesting. It has Chipperfield, Holl and TWBTA overtones and is my favorite of the six.

I can't say anything about the fourth and fifth because I can't think of anything nice.

Finally, the sixth looks DS+R "influenced", perhaps on a day with an acute hangover.

My vote goes to #3 even thought it has some resurgent Brutalist attitudes.
