Third Prize at the Taiwan Conceptual Tower International Competition for "Wind Firefly" by VOID_7 and p96d

Project Description:

The Taiwan Tower rises to 387 meters high thanks to combined structure of exoskeleton (permeable to wind), vertebral columns (rigid boxes in the inner space) and tendons linking the boxes to the outer skin.

The skin mounted on the exoskeleton is composed of three main elements: wicker work that makes the climatic conditions inside milder, thousands of small and medium wind turbines connected to LED lights that illumniate the buildings as they get some wind, solar panels that aquire solar energy.

The only spaces that are climatized are the exhibition and the working area so the very efficiency starts here.

Surprising!

I was starting to think that it is impossible to get a prize in these kind of competitions without a bloblike proposal...

It feels good to see that architecture, and not only renders, count also. Bravo.

Tomer:

Very interesting work!...better and more practical than first and second place winners. However, yours lack in site-level interaction. sadly, very few winning proposals have incorporated competition requirement to design site, site access, walkways etc. keeping in mind, Taiwan's hot/humid climate. The requirements stressed on covered walkways and greenery.

congrats!

And suddenly, one gets to discover that complexity is possible being rectangular... grin

Nice job!

Void7 did also an interesting proposal for the Dubai tower. I identify myself in that practice. So different forms, same spatial ambition. Good team to keep sn eye on them.

Despite the lack of site planning in this proposal it is highly welcome the way it deals with the so called green issues. In my humble opinion, quite better than 1st prize (pure image for an atraction for the Neo-Coney Island) and the 2nd prize (less Peter Cook than ever).

Just one thing... those interior renders... geek! they can get easily better.
My congratulations, anyway.

The night lighting variation according to the wind is a beautiful concept, and it is achieved through green techniques, much better.

I've seen the original boards uploaded in the competition website and the structural concept is even more attractive than the skin lighting by the wind.
It seems to be designed as a human body, with vertebral column, tendons...
Quite interesting and breaking apart from the others in that well thought structural scheme.

Congratulations.

Elegant and so interesting in its relationship with the environment. I think it is good for all of us when architecture makes it easy.
