If you're in need of some insightful discussion about economics, ecology -- or better yet, the relationship between both and its societal influence, come join The Architectural League's "Prosperity for a Finite Planet" lecture on April 24 featuring leading ecological economist Tim Jackson.
The lecture will take place at 7 pm at the Scholastic Auditorium: 557 Broadway, New York. Following Jackson's lecture will be a conversation with Eduardo Porter, the writer of the Economic Scene column in The New York Times.
Find more details below.
"British economist Tim Jackson will address the critical and intensely contested question of what economic paradigm has the best chance of offering real and widespread prosperity, now and into the future, to nations across the spectrum of stages of economic development as the world moves to address climate change. Are we increasing our wealth if economic activity irreversibly alters the atmosphere and conditions of life on Earth? Jackson argues that unending economic growth on a finite planet is not possible, but that prosperity and progress nonetheless are. In his recent book Prosperity Without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet, Jackson discusses how, in a world with ecological limits, we can make what we need, get it to the people who need it, and nurture what we already have. Jacksonʼs lecture is part of The Architectural League initiative The Five Thousand Pound Life: New Ways of Thinking, Talking, and Acting on Architecture, Climate Change, and Our Economic Future.
One of the worldʼs leading thinkers on the relationship between economy and environment, Tim Jackson directs the Sustainable Lifestyles Research Group, an independent think tank funded jointly by the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the Scottish Government. After five years as Senior Researcher at the Stockholm Environment Institute, he was appointed Professor of Sustainable Development at the University of Surrey – the first such chair to be created in the UK. He was the sole academic representative on the UK Sustainable Consumption Round Table and co-authored their influential report I will if you will. He was a co-author of the Worldwatch Instituteʼs State of the World 2008 report on sustainable economies.
From 2006 – 2009, he led the Sustainable Development Commissionʼs “Redefining Prosperity” program and authored a controversial report, which served as the basis of his book Prosperity without Growth: Economics for a Finite Planet. Professor Jackson has advised UNEP on sustainable consumption and production, the European Environment Agency on green GDP, and the US EPA on waste prevention, sustainable consumption, and behavior change. He has pioneered both quantitative and qualitative aspects of the relationship between peopleʼs lifestyles, societal values and the environment."
