Winners of the L.A. Conservancy 2015 Preservation Awards

The Los Angeles Conservancy recently revealed the winners of the 2015 Preservation Awards. Established in 1982, the annual awards recognize individuals and groups for their outstanding achievements in historic preservation -- including sensitive restoration, rehabilitation, adaptive reuse, advocacy, and education efforts -- to highlight the ongoing efforts of preserving L.A. County's architectural heritage.
Out of 26 competitive submissions, the jury selected the following as award recipients :
Project winners:
- Hafley House, Long Beach
- Kun House, Hollywood
- Hollyhock House, Los Feliz/Hollywood
- LAUSD Historic Context Statement
- Lincoln Place Apartment Homes, Venice
- Pacific Electric Railway – El Prado Bridge, Torrance
- Rosslyn Hotel Apartments, Downtown Los Angeles
- Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Beverly Hills
Additionally, Alan Hess received the President's Award, which the Conservancy bestows for exceptional contributions. The winners will be presented with their awards during the 34th Annual Luncheon at Downtown L.A.'s Millennium Biltmore Hotel on May 7.
Kun House, Hollywood
Project summary: "The painstaking restoration of the Kun House stands as a testament to private stewardship and an inspiration to the preservation community."
Hafley House, Long Beach
Project summary: "The project team used original construction documents, correspondence, and Neutra’s field notes to restore this beautiful Mid-Century Modern home."
Hollyhock House, Los Feliz/Hollywood
Project summary: "After four years of meticulous restoration work, this Los Angeles gem is once again open to the public."
Lincoln Place Apartment Homes, Venice
Project summary: "This project demonstrates that if done correctly, old and new construction can co-exist harmoniously in garden apartment communities."
Pacific Electric Railway - El Prado Bridge, Torrance
Project summary: The City of Torrance commissioned a project to repair, stabilize, and preserve the bridge just in time for its centennial.
Rosslyn Hotel Apartments, Downtown Los Angeles
Project summary: "This former hotel had suffered from years of neglect, but a preservation project restored, repaired, and rehabilitated everything from the first-floor storefronts to the rooftop sign, transforming the building into affordable housing and support services for those in need."
Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts, Beverly Hills
Project summary: "The project team restored historic elements of the original post office building and added a modern annexto transform the site into a performing arts center."
LAUSD Historic Context Statement
Summary: "This vital planning document gives the country's second-largest school district a roadmap for preserving its wealth of historic facilities." More info.
2015 President's Award - Alan Hess: "Through more than thirty years of scholarship and advocacy, Alan Hess pioneered the recognition and preservation of our Mid-Century Modern heritage by shining a light on the hidden, forgotten, and overlooked places that helped to define Southern California."
