This is the first of several competitions run to identify a range of possible design solutions, against a broad conceptual brief, with no commitment to build. They will be for significant design sites around the world. The aim of the Tiananmen Square Landscape Compeition is to generate debate and ideas for re-designing part of the most important urban space in the history of Chinese Civilization. We hope this will also set a new course for Eastern Landscape Architecture, helping in the development of an ecologically and culturally distinctive design tradition. This is a Web 2.0 landscape design competition running from March 2009 to June 2010.

Competition Entries should be published to Flickr as soon as they are ready. It is an ideas competetion so if two people submit similar ideas, priority will be given to the design idea which was published and added to the Tiananman Square Landscape Flickr Group first.

Among the questions we seek to answer through this competitive event are: “How can we use design to bring to connect a community to positives of its past while bringing the all the benefits of today’s technologies?” Also, “What are ways we can utilize form and function to instill worth, pride, and hope to regions of disenfranchisement and disillusionment?

Specifically, challenge one is to spur greater urban renewal of this locale through the proposal of a design for a Chicago Union Stockyards Museum & Education Center incorporating the landmark gate and expanding the park. The second design challenge is provide sustainable residential spaces which encourage assimilation and foster dignity, community and opportunities for immediate vocational participation to immigrant communities currently dwelling in less than desirable conditions in many Western European countries and in the U.S.

Finalists will be chosen from among the entrants which will then be made available to the public for voting to determine the most practical and pleasing interpretation of the given design project.

An open design competition is being sponsored by the Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial organization (ACBHM, Inc.), a private non-profit foundation chartered for the purpose of erecting the Memorial, in co-operation with the City of Atlantic City, which has dedicated a superb site for this purpose. Our competition will be advertised nationally and internationally, and juried by a world class panel of experts in the field of architecture and design. Responses are welcomed from throughout the world.

THE DESIGN COMPETITION PROGRAM: The competition is an open, two-stage design competition. At the first stage, digital submission of the design concept will be online only. These will be judged anonymously by members of our distinguished Jurors, who may choose six to ten finalists. Each finalist will be awarded an honorarium of $2,500 to develop a three-dimensional model and a fully realized scheme for the site. All final presentations will be publicly exhibited and judged at a convocation of the Jurors, and the winner will be declared at a public ceremony. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial organization will enter into good faith negotiations with the winning competitor for a contract to provide the services necessary to realize the Memorial. Concurrently the design will be reviewed by the planning board and fine arts board of the city of Atlantic City. In the event the winning design is eventually built, the winner will be awarded a commission to realize the winning design.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE: This competition seeks to stimulate fresh thinking about public memorials, and invites ideas from diverse fields. The requirements for the Memorial and how it occupies the site are as unconstrained as possible. Participants are encouraged to contemplate the meaning of the Holocaust and genocide in our lives today, and to invent a fitting design for this time and this place. We look to our competitors to propose the appropriate metaphors and forms for such a Memorial.

A FINAL THOUGHT:The Holocaust is surely among the darkest moments in modern history and all recorded civilization. Its infamous accounts mandate that mankind never again tolerate the unjust brutalizatiion and destruction of any group or individual. Yet, in spite of the Holocaust, history continues to repeat itself. This Memorial will be dedicated to all future generations to stand in unity against such wholesale victimization and genocide. Our goal is to create a Memorial that shall raise awareness in the minds of visitors to man’s unconsciousable inhumanity to man. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial shall stand as witness and barrier against the future repetition of any such reprehensible acts.

With the ongoing shrinkage of available and suitable space to meet the residential needs of burgeoning urban populations, designers and developers are looking at the use of vertical communities to achieve housing goals. The 2010 International Skyscraper Challenge affords today’s future designers an opportunity to assume the profile of professionals as they incorporate a team of skilled partners to design, construct and market a tall building for a site within the dense urban population of Mexico City – the 3rd largest metropolitan region in the world. If this is the sort of challenge which intrigues and motivates you, you are just that’s the kind of visionary we’re seeking to compete in the 2010 Mock Architecture Firm Competition! If you believe you have what it takes to put together a team of success-minded drafters, graphic artists, engineers, and communicators to incorporate your own simulated architecture firm then make plans now to be in Chicago, April 15-17 for the 2010 Mock Firms Finals.

The Metropolis Next Generation® Design Competition was created in 2003 to promote activism, social involvement, and entrepreneurship in young designers. Metropolis saw the need for a new type of competition, one that went beyond the usual beauty pageants for finished projects, a competition that would generate and reward ideas.

Metropolis celebrates the next generation by rewarding imaginative young designers at large companies and recognizing the hard work of those striving with their own young firms or on their own as well as students—while some designers have a proposal ready and waiting, others are at the beginning of the process with an undefined desire to create and can use a kick start.

The Next Generation® winners and runners-up are a testament to the success of this mission. Each project recognized has embodied the core values of good design—incorporating systems thinking, sustainability, accessibility, materials exploration, historic relevance, and technology—while forwarding our thinking on what designers can accomplish. The breadth of proposals has been stunning: building projects, urban planning and community building schemes, responsive interior environments, population pressure issues, new materials, ergonomics, product design, social and housing solutions, environmental management, water purity, and waste disposal in crisis situations and so on. The prize of $10,000 in seed money for developing the projects, plus the publicity they receive, have helped winners’ and runners-ups’ projects leap from the drawing board to implementation and production.

Art Directors Club launches inaugural student brief with Nissan. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level programs in advertising, graphic design, photography, illustration and new media are eligible to enter ADC’s co-presented brief based competition.

Nissan cube® is unlike any other car on the American road. Its funky exterior is punctuated by an asymmetrical rear window and a low, wide stance. Its comfy interior is a place to have fun with friends. It offers multiple options for self expression with features like a removable shag dashboard carpet, multi-color interior mood lighting, and configurable storage. Cube is part car, part social destination.

ADC is inviting students to address these questions:
- How would you introduce cube?
- What creative would you run?
- Where would you run the creative for maximum reach and efficiency?

Develop a campaign, or concepts, that makes Nissan cube a part of our target’s life. The campaign shouldn’t feel like marketing, it should feel like a natural extension of where our target goes and what they do. To this end, use channels and communication vehicles you feel are most appropriate to our target’s lifestyle and what the model represents.

The Ville de Montréal is pleased to announce a nationwide ideas competition for the redesigning of the area around the Champ-de-Mars métro station. The purpose of the competition is to solicit explorations and illustrations of a variety of development concepts made possible by the planned covering of the Ville-Marie expressway and the potential reconfiguration of its exit ramps.

Champ-de-Mars station, with its magnificent glassworks by renowned artist Marcelle Ferron, is one of the few landmarks remaining from the time before the construction of the Ville-Marie expressway. The immediate perimeter of the station forms a link between downtown Montréal and Old Montréal, and is one of the main pedestrian access routes to the historic district.

Refelecting on the Quality of Public Spaces in Montréal

The competition invites entrants to submit development proposals that integrate smoothly with the existing public spaces and take into account the current and future built environment, including the impending Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. Proposals must promote citizen appropriation of the urban environment and provide a development framework that facilitates movement through the city.

This design competition is the third to be implemented in the wake of the commitments announced by the Mayor of Montréal at the Pecha Kucha Night for Elected Officials on September 30, 2008. It aims to provide tangible impetus for creativity in made-in-Montréal design and architecture and widen access to public design commissions to the largest possible number of practitioners.

About the Competition

The concept competition is being held on an anonymous-entry basis and is open to all design professionals, students or consortiums whose main place of business is located in Canada. It is a single-stage competition, with two submission categories, one for professionals and the other for students. The language of the competition is French. However, the conceptual approach may include a text in English.

Proposals received will be studied and evaluated by a jury on the basis of the following criteria:

enhancement of the architecture and glassworks of Champ-de-Mars métro station
reinforcement of the pedestrian links and access routes leading from the station to all of the surrounding areas
innovative and esthetic qualities of the project
atmosphere created by the planned action

The jury members are:

Melvin Charney, architect
Odile Decq, architect and Director of the École Spéciale d’Architecture, Paris
Jacques Des Rochers, Curator of Canadian Art, Montréal Museum of Fine Arts
Michel Dionne, architect, Cooper, Robertson & Partners, New York
Raphaël Fischler, urban planner and professor at the School of Urban Planning, McGill University
Mario Masson, landscape architect and Division Manager, Service du développement culturel, de la qualité du milieu de vie et de la diversité ethnoculturelle, Ville de Montréal
Alessandra Ponte, associate professor, School of Architecture, Université de Montréal
Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, landscape architect and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design at Université de Montréal

Instructions for Prospective Entrants

Registration is free and mandatory. Each entrant must complete the form available here, by January 15, 2010. Download the competition regulations here.

http://www.landartgenerator.org/competition.html

The Land Art Generator Initiative is the artworld’s responsible answer to the question:

“what comes after oil?”

The long-term goal of the Land Art Generator Initiative is to design and construct a series of land art installations that uniquely combine aesthetic intrigue and artistic concept with clean energy generation. The LAGI viewing platforms will be tourist destinations, drawing people from around the world to experience the beauty of the collaborative artworks. At the same time, the art itself will continuously distribute clean energy into the electrical grid, with the sculptures having the potential to provide power to thousands of homes.

We are living in a world in which the climate is deeply affected by the burning of fossil fuels for energy generation and in which it is estimated by the oil industry that petroleum reserves will be mostly used up by the time children born today reach middle age.

So what can the artworld do in order to stimulate change at an even faster pace? Why not create works of art that themselves provide clean, infinitely renewable energy to the world? These artworks can be large-scale installations related to the genre of land-art. They can be profound and lasting statements of purpose. Their message can reach across generations and continents.

The time is now to do whatever we can to make the shift to cleaner forms of energy. Art has the power to reach the hearts and the minds of the world, and it is this power that we must tap into if we are to see substantive change.

This open call to interdisciplinary teams is the first step in the process of inititating this change. The winning proposal will be the first in line to be constructed. Once completed, it will be the first of its kind in the world.

An exhibit of all qualified proposals will be held at the conclusion of the competition. This exhibit will provide a forum for a public presentation and discussion of all of the works. It is the intention of LAGI to have this exhibit travel to as many venues as possible in the time after the competition period in order to broaden the audience that is a part of the dialogue.

The designs should be considered first and foremost as Land Art Installations. The considerations for energy generation should come in a close second. What this means is that the installations are art first, power plants second. There will most-likely be sacrifices to be made in terms of efficiency of energy generation in order that the design function primarily on a conceptual and aesthetic level. The objective is not to design and engineer a device that provides the cheapest KWh or the most energy per square meter of land.

The best projects of each competition are widely published from architecture, design, and fashion publications to technology, business, and entertainment magazines. The winning projects are also featured in websites, television documentaries, and galleries.

We would like to invite students and professional architects, engineers, and designers to take part in the 2010 Skyscraper Competition. The main idea of this contest is to examine the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community and the skyscraper and urban living.

In the last few years we have seen hundreds of new skyscrapers been developed around the world without careful consideration to the context or environment. There is a constant lack of urban planning and poor architectural design without intellectual or perceptual enjoyment. The aim of the competition is to push our imagination to redefine the term skyscraper through the use of new materials, technology, aesthetics, programs, and spatial organizations. Globalization, environmental warming, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution are just some of the multi-layered elements that should be taken in consideration.

Zerofootprint is proud to launch the Zerofootprint Building Re-Skinning Competition. The goal of this competition is to advance the state-of-the-art in retrofitting existing building structures through better design and improved materials and technology, thus creating retrofitting systems that can be scaled to a large number of buildings and deployed globally. Older wasteful buildings account for nearly 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions, and it is our wish that by creating a smart, reproducible, beautiful, cost-effective, and energy efficient scheme, a scalable solution may be found. More information can be found here: http://communities.zerofootprint.net/building-re-skinning-competition/

Judging the competition are some of the world’s most respected architects and environmentalists, including William McDonough, Edward Mazria, Stefan Benisch, Andrew Bowerbank, Thomas Auer, Judith DiMaio, and George Baird.

The competition will be judged on the aesthetics, energy efficiency, smart technology, return on investment and potential as a solution for a large number of buildings. The deadline for the submission of designs is January 10, 2010.

The Z-Prize:
The winning 5 entries will be monitored for a period of 3 years after completion of the retrofit to examine and compare how they actually perform in practice. The Z-Prize will be given to the building that has most reduced the energy per square foot, averaged over the 3 years of monitoring.
The ZEROprize
Addressing an Urgent Global Need
North America’s existing building infrastructure accounts for up to 40% of all greenhouse gases produced in the United States and Canada. In cities that figure can surpass 65%. Older buildings while structurally sound often waste precious energy and are a major source of the greenhouse gas emissions polluting our cities.

Zerofootprint is offering the ZEROprize to the design team who can take an older concrete high-rise structure and, using re-skinning along with other retrofitting technologies, reduce its carbon, water, and energy footprint to net zero while also maintaining the highest architectural design standards.

To secure the ZEROprize, a candidate building will be required to have a net zero footprint for one year.

The Re-Skinning Award
In addition to the ZEROprize, the supporting Zerofootprint Re-Skinning Award will be offered every year. The Zerofootprint Re-Skinning Award is meant to attract state-of-the-art retrofitted and re-skinned buildings that are exceptional, but do not meet the performance standards of the ZEROprize.

The objective of the Re-Skinning award is to stimulate global interest in new building technologies, an area that the media tends to underreport, and accelerate innovation in a critical industrial sector. Through its website, the Re-Skinning Award will also provide building owners everywhere with quantitative information explaining how green, retrofitting technologies can reduce energy demand, clean our cities, and save them money.

The Re-Skinning Award entry date is January 10, 2010.

Clients worldwide have become more demanding. They want aesthetically and creatively appealing designs, better technology to have everything at their fingertips, and facilities that allow them to indulge or relax, just a call away. Also, gone are the days of heavily formal designs in hotels. The new breed of adventurous designers and travelers has made the hotels rethink their set beliefs about guest service and hotel design.

Travelers want to be surprised or wowed each time they walk in. The reason for a more casual ambience in hotels can also be attributed to the need of frequent travelers to feel at home. Only a decade back, renovations and would be carried out at a gap of five to seven years. The periodicity has now increased to three to five years. Additionally, as business travel has increased all across the globe, new hotels are constantly being built in major destination cities.

This has increased the workload on designers, but eased their work because of the hotel’s enthusiasm to experiment. Modular building is one way to help maintain all the aspects of a modern hotel within the newly shortened lifespan and demand for “the next best thing.”

The competition asks students to learn about modular building techniques and systems in the design of a modern and sustainable Miami Beach hotel. Objectives for the competition include:
1.To research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing a modern hotel that serves the selected site and community of Miami Beach, FL
2.To learn about and utilize the modular building process to develop a mutli-story design that meets both the program requirements and promotes advancements for future modular buildings
3.To design a facility that utilizes sustainable features in the areas of thermal comfort, indoor air quality, day lighting, acoustics, energy efficiency, resource strategy, aesthetics, and economic practicality (ability to attain LEED certification is preferred but not required)
4.To develop a design that compliments the existing buildings and natural surroundings of the community both now and into the future
5.To develop a design that reflects the unique culture, history and climate of Miami Beach site

Winning designs will be awarded $2500 for first place, $1500 for second place, $750 for third place, or $500 for each honorable mention (3).

For more information on the competition, to download the program or to register you or your team (teams may be up to four students) please visit the competition Web site at http://www.aias.org/modularbuilding.

Exploration of housing typologies reveals vast the potential of overlaying urban, contextual, cultural, social, and life cycle flows toward determining new architectonic strategies for the future. The d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore, document, analyze, transform, and deploy innovative approaches to residential urbanism, architecture, interiors, and designed objects.

The competition calls for transformative solutions that advance sustainable thought, building performance, and social interaction through study of intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. Special emphasis may be placed on housing concepts that investigate dialogues including engagement of internal/external socio-economic diversity, change/adaptability over time, public/private realm connectivity, and permanence/impermanence of materiality. d3 challenges participants to rethink strategies for investigating residential design from macro-to-micro scales ranging from urban—promoting broader physical interconnectivity; communal—exploiting an interaction of units with shared facilities; and internal—examining the interior particularity of the unit, individual, or family in housing design toward promoting identity, ownership, and intimacy.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself. Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with residential buildings. Accordingly, design submissions must be environmentally responsible while fostering inventive conceptual living solutions for today and tomorrow. Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable residential future.

The d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner, from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of the interior realm. Although there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or residential building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.

With all the different actors needed to erect a building the architect always has to enter into a dialogue. The end result will be a compromise, whether you like it or not. A compromise is understood as a concept of finding agreement through communication, through a mutual acceptance of terms—often involving variations or aberration from an original goal or desire. Some architects may understand compromise as a capitulation, referring to a “surrender” of objectives, principles, or material, in the process of negotiating an agreement. Is “compromise” an agreement that no party is really satisfied with? Or is the compromise, in many cases, the most appropriate answer? An increasing number of young architects tend to compromise their beliefs, their health, their social life. Work long hours to endure in the so called world of architecture, where fame and media define who is going to be the next star architect. How much do you need to compromise in order to belong to this glamorous world? Glamour denotes luxury and elegance, creating an impression of attraction and fascination, an impression which is better than reality.

September 10, 2009, NEW YORK, NY. The Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), AIA New York Chapter, is pleased to announce its fourth biennial international ideas competition, High Bridge: Bronx, Building Cultural Infrastructure (HB:BX). Please join us at the Trespa Design Centre in SoHo, September 10 at 6:00 pm to help us celebrate its launch.

This competition is open to all emerging professionals, including, but not limited to, architects, artists, engineers, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners who have completed their education at the undergraduate or graduate level within 10 years of the competition announcement (September 10, 2009). The registration deadline is November 18, 2009, and the submission deadline is January 18, 2010. An online gallery will feature all submitted design entries. In addition, cash prizes and inclusion in an exhibition and publication will be awarded to the winning designs.

HB:BX is an open ideas competition to design an arts center that culturally reinforces the physical connection between the Manhattan and Bronx High Bridge communities of New York City. Working in cooperation with the arts organizations Artists Unite and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, ENYA means to draw awareness to the current efforts to restore and reopen the historic High Bridge. This competition is a forum to explore the urban and community improvement opportunities that may come with the achievement of such a momentous milestone. Thus, ENYA challenges designers to explore how disused structures can be reprogrammed into elements of a vibrant urban cultural center. Entrants are also challenged to rethink the relationship between existing infrastructure (aqueduct, railway, highway) and the contemporary urban context. These issues, universally relevant to any growing city, take on a more site-specific nature when considering the importance of the High Bridge and the topographic challenges posed by the steep riverbanks of the Harlem River. Also defining this competition are the unique clients who ask entrants to reconsider architecture’s role in the creation, display, and experience of viewing art in one of the world’s most culturally vibrant cities.

General information about HB:BX follows:
Type: International Ideas Competition.
[Note: The competition results are intended to generate ideas for the site and will not result in actual development by ENYA or other parties involved.]

Registration Begins: Sept 10, 2009
Early Registration Ends: Nov 15, 2009
Late Registration Ends: Dec 15, 2009

The AIA is hosting its first ever design competition on Facebook—the AIA Facebook Young Designers Challenge. The competition is targeting emerging professionals, and is open to all AIAS members, all Assoc. AIA members, and all AIA young architect members. (The AIA defines young architects as being licensed 10 years or less.)

The AIA is asking designers to submit new, unbuilt building projects that address America’s most pressing design needs for the 21st century. This can include, but is not limited to: sustainability, public infrastructure, affordable housing, retrofitting suburbs and other resource-intensive built environments, urban farming, and rehabilitating dilapidated urban cores. This requirement is intentionally flexible. The most important factor is that each design offers an innovative solution to a concrete and unsolved problem. The winning designer will be announced in AIArchitect with a feature article on their design in January.

Let’s see what tomorrow’s generation of architects has to offer America today!

For years, Northern Virginia’s Four Mile Run has functioned as a flood control channel and a border between the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. More recently, growing community interest in revitalizing and celebrating the Run has resulted in the Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan. The plan outlines a broad range of ambitious, feasible goals to restore the ecology of the Run while re-establishing it as a cherished park space and a means of stitching together communities.

Bridges are built to connect, traverse, and inspire. The pedestrian and cyclist bridges planned to reach across the run will be the defining elements in bringing people to the shores of the stream and to each other. As pieces of transit infrastructure, the bridges will also link neighborhoods, streets, and pathways, thus providing a more accessible and desirable means to walk or bike across the region. The first of these bridges is to establish the design language for the others to follow, and is the subject of this professional competition. Taking inspiration from its surrounding natural and industrial elements, the bridge is to be a modern, sustainable, and sculptural piece, spanning clear across the run with minimal impact to the streambed.

The competition to design and build this bridge begins with a request for qualifications and culminates in a public presentation given by three finalists. A winning team will be chosen based on the strength of their professional skills and the potential for their conceptual design to become an icon for the Four Mile Run and its surrounding community.

Please visit http://www.4milerun.org/ for more competition details. The deadline to submit qualifications is 4:00 pm (EST) December 7, 2009.

Introduction : stimulus
Light as stimulus. Light is a material of many faces, that can fulfill many roles when used to enrich the built space and the urban realm. Ephemerally light can inspire, create ambiance, and affect emotions, while physically it can improve sight, denote importance, and provide guidance. More often than not light in some way touches on both of these in intentional and unintentional ways. Using light in design is a
difficult task as it has many unpredictable and uncontrollable aspects. Manipulating light is similar to a complex puzzle, as every move has increased side effects, which is why light is such an excitement. Entrants for this year’s Window Display Competition are welcome to embrace the exploration of light’s many faces in order to create light as stimulus that will leave impressions on those who see it in the urban context and influence the surrounding environment. Concepts should explore both the technical and ephemeral aspects of light. Saturation, contrast, color, and viewing scale should also be considered.

Eligibility
The competition is open to all students, designers, architects, light designers,
artists, engineers, etc. Participants may work individually or as part of a team.
Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged and only one entry is permitted per
team.

Requirements
Entrants to this year’s Associate AIA Window Display Competition are encouraged. Installation designs must explore multiple uses for Artemide’s light fixtures and will be judged on the design’s ability to integrate Artemide’s fixtures with the entrant’s concept for light as stimulus. The installation should be appropriately sized to accommodate a 12’-0” X 5’-0” X 10’-0” volume of space on the interior face of
the north showroom window and fit through a 6’-0” X 8’-0” door. No alteration to the existing structure will be permitted. No attachments to the interior flooring will be permitted. Anchors, attachments, or supports on interior walls or ceiling must be of a temporary nature. The construction budget is limited to $1250 and shall not be exceeded.

Submission
No registration fee to enter. Please register with name and e-mail address at windowcomp@gmail.com to receive a registration number. Entries are to be a single 24” x 36” board, mounted on foamcore, oriented in either portrait or landscape. Write the registration number in the upper right corner on the back of the board.

With the construction of the Ohio and Erie Canal, connecting Lake Erie at Cleveland with the Ohio River at Portsmouth in the early 1800’s, the City of Cleveland became an important northern port city for the movement, manufacturing and distribution of goods throughout the Midwest. The primacy of the early transportation network of interstate canals and river/lake shipping would be short-lived, but its affect on the trajectory for growth of Great Lakes cities like Cleveland would be enduring. By the mid-1800’s, interurban commuter rail service and intercity industrial and passenger rail increased in the City establishing rail shipping and travel as the primary mode of transportation within and throughout Northeast Ohio. Cleveland remained an important rail hub until after World War II when transportation for most industrial shipping and personal travel shifted from the nation’s rail lines to the growing interstate highway system.

Recently, rising fuel costs and considerable interest in sustainable transportation has led to substantial federal commitment to upgrading America’s rail system for the twenty-first century. This investment by the federal government has spurred a number of proposals for passenger rail service across the country. In the State of Ohio, the Ohio Hub plan re-establishes Cleveland as an important rail hub in Ohio, for travel throughout the Midwest and to cities on the East Coast. By utilizing rail to strengthen connectivity, these new multi-modal transportation networks - and the facilities that serve them - will help reinforce the social and economic sustainability of the American City.

Project 2009: Lakefront Station challenges entrants to propose designs for a Multi-Modal Transportation Center in Downtown Cleveland at the north end of the historic Mall. This new transportation center will provide the city with a state-of-the-art rail station ready to support high speed passenger rail service, a facility capable of integrating and balancing the needs of various transportation modes, and a pedestrian connector from the Mall to Cleveland’s lakefront. Linked into a High Speed Passenger Rail network, Downtown Cleveland will be an important national rail center among a network of connected American cities, a fitting gateway to the City of Cleveland.

Prizes for the 2009 Cleveland Design Competition are as follows:
First Place: $5,000.000 USD
Second Place: $2,000.00 USD
Third Place: $1,000.00 USD

For more information regarding the 2009 Cleveland Design Competition, please refer to the website: http://www.clevelandcompetition.com. The Jury will be announced on October 23, 2009.

This year’s competiton partners and platinum sponsors include: The Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, the Cleveland Mall Plaza Beautification Fund, Kent State University’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative, the Ohio Chapter American Society of Landscape Architects, FORUM Architectural Services, Westlake Reed Leskosky, and Cleveland Public Art.

Courts have been an integral part of a community since the development of the Forum in Roman cities. From local circuit courts and city halls to the Halls of Supreme Court, millions of Americans have utilized these facilities for civic, social and community involvement. Now in the modern era, how does a municipal courthouse continue to serve as the local identity of justice while ensuring a secure location for discourse and business?

As the preeminent symbol of authority in local communities, a municipal courthouse must express solemnity, stability, integrity, rigor, and fairness. Furthermore, the building must be the embodiment of the surrounding community’s history, religious and secular beliefs and cultural differences. Many courthouses strive to contribute positively to the architectural fabric of the local community.

As publicly funded buildings, municipal courthouses need to be as energy efficient as possible. Utilizing green building principles in design makes sense both environmentally and financially. Having a publicly used, LEED® certified building can help introduce community members to green building principles.

Sponsored by Kawneer and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), this competition challenges students to learn about building materials, specifically architectural aluminum building products and systems in the design of a secure and sustainable municipal courthouse. While open to any student, the competition is designed for advanced students. Total prize money is $7,225, including $2,500 for the first place winning design.

Taking the lessons learned from the strip mall designs of the 1980’s and the more recent design principles promoted by community planners, cities have developed small pedestrian centers within the city that specialize in entertainment venues for adults. With a collection of restaurants, bookstores, theaters, coffee shops and small retail spaces, these entertainment centers create a small community within the whole of the larger city.

The exterior design and materials of these centers is very important due to the need to attract patrons and serve as a vibrant and visually interesting destination. Modern finishes, bright colors, cleanable surfaces and durable materials are the mainstays for these designs. Trespa panels are an ideal material both to meet the needs of the project and to allow for the design of a creative and engaging space.

Sponsored by Trespa International and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the program challenges students to learn about building materials, specifically architectural wall panels and systems in the design of an engaging and sustainable City Entertainment Center.
The Bohemian Flats is a historic parcel of land located on the Mississippi River’s west bank south of the I-35W bridge and directly under the Washington Avenue bridge in Minneapolis, MN. It was once a populous “shanty town” for European immigrants working in the Minneapolis flour mills. However, since the late 1950’s the site has been a grassy, open park for the city.

Thousands of people commute by the small swath of land everyday by foot, bike, car and boat. However there is no formal structure or landmark at the Bohemian Flats Park to call out to everyone passing by. This competition is seeking a solution to that problem.

By locating a small park pavilion and boathouse at the Bohemian Flats Park, the site will once again become the destination for the city’s residents and visitors. In addition to the boathouse, landscape planning and additional signage may be implemented within the design.

By utilizing vinyl building products in the design of the new Bohemian Flats Boathouse, designers will be able to ensure the building is not only cost effective, but energy efficient and resistant to the drastic climate changes, among the other benefits offered by vinyl building products. In developing an efficient and creatively designed facility, the boathouse may endure as a landmark on the river front for years to come.

Sponsored by The Vinyl Institute and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the program challenges students to learn about building materials, specifically vinyl building products and systems in the design of an efficient and creative boathouse for the Bohemian Flats Park in Minneapolis, MN. The competition is designed for architecture and design students of all levels. Total prize money is $7,675, including $2,500 for the first place winning design.

The term real usually refers to reality, the state of things as they actually exist. But in law, the word real means relating to a thing as distinguished from a person. The new topic of MONU magazine on urbanism will deal with the latter and particularly with real estate. Thus, Real Urbanism should be understood as Real Estate Urbanism and not as Actual or Factual Urbanism.

In law, real estate is defined as a term that encompasses land along with anything permanently affixed to the land, such as buildings, specifically property that is fixed in location. Real estate is often considered synonymous with real property, in contrast with personal property, meaning movable property or any property that can be moved from one location to another.

MONU #12 seeks to explore how people in the real estates business perceive and conceive cities. What do cities look like in the eyes of real estate investors, property managers, and urban developers? What is a good and what is bad city according to real estate agents? This issue tries to illuminate the hidden forces that ultimately establish the physical reality of cities.

But this issue is not meant to be merely polemical and critical of financial forces and economic power that are related to real estate in cities - no Don-Quixotean anti-capitalistic battles shall be fought - but rather attempts will be made to reveal the particular interests of people involved in the real estate sector and their consequences on the built environment. What concerns us most is to put those topics on the agenda and to understand their impacts and dependencies. Nevertheless, radical critical texts are also very welcome.

This call for submissions invites sharp texts, significant and relevant projects, artistic reflections, but also applicable photography or illustrations on the topic of “Real Urbanism” for our next issue of MONU. Abstracts and ideas should be sent with a word count of 200 to 500 and images and illustrations in low resolution to info@monu-magazine.com by the end of November 2009. MONU #12 will be published in the winter of 2010.

APPROACH
Is the city an unsustainable fact by itself? Is it possible to reconstruct it in order to reach a win-win solution for everybody? Many attempts have been made to radically modify the composition of cities during modernity. This was the case of Le Corbusier Ville Radieuse and Plan Voisin. And more recently, Dubai has been built using the latest technology in order to expand its territory within the sea.
Is it possible to find a brand new city nowadays? If true, what would be considered to shape its configuration? what social and spatial organization would determine it? We think that is really possible to conceive and visualize a new city to help us improve the ones we have. And together with Garcia Marquez we believe it is not too late to build a Utopia based on shared land.
ARPAFIL’s contest seeks designs for a new city capable of responding to present and future challenges. A more environmentally, economically and socially sustainable city. The goal is not to develop a master plan, but an ideal of city. A city system that allows nature, public and private spaces to interact in the most efficient way, improving people’s lives and taking into account climatic, geographical and topographical variables.

THE SITE
The new city will be located in the central-western region of Mexico in The Atemajac Valley part of Jalisco State between coordinates 20° 34′ 0″ N, 103° 40′ 35″ W. The valley is bordered by “El Bosque de la Primavera” to the west, the “Barranca de Huentitán” to the north and the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt to the east and south, averaging 1530 to 1550 meters above sea level.

JUDGING CRITERIA
Designs will be judged on principles such as urban landscape, sustainable development and mobility, adaptation strategies for natural environment and social inclusion. There are no restrictions on population density or city area. The proposed site corresponds to the actual location of the city of Guadalajara in Mexico. Participants are asked to act as if the land was never occupied. (See site plan)

DESIGN COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS AND NEW GRADUATESOF ARCHITECTURE AND ENGINEERING PROGRAMMES

INSTANTHOUSE
TEMPORARY HOUSING UNITS
FOR EXPO 2015' S YOUNG GUESTS

1. Foreword
On the occasion of MADEexpo 2010 (Milano Architettura Design Edilizia), the tradefair event
which will take place between 3rd and 6th February 2010 at the Fieramilano exhibition centre
in Rho, FederlegnoArredo srl intends to promote a competition aimed at selecting projects
which highlight architecture which is sensitive to the environment and territory, to sustainability
and the need for human wellbeing and quality of life.

A 1:1 scale prototype will be made of the winning project, to be displayed at the international
MADE EXPO 2010 event.

The competition is aimed at students and new graduates from the faculties of architecture,
engineering and industrial design (Italian and foreign), in possession of the requirements referred
to in this announcement.

2. Promoter
The competition is a FederlegnoArredo srl initiative for MADEexpo, in collaboration with the
Politecnico di Milano.

3. Theme and specific objectives of the competition
Environment and soundscape of contemporary metropolises.
One of the most significant aspects of new urban settlements is the congestion which originates
from the necessary cohabitation of functions which are often in conflict with each
other.

In particular, in the Milan metropolis, the need to introduce infrastructural systems into a highly
anthropised territory requires us to rethink not only the technical and morphological properties
of the networks, but above all the ways of designing existing and future life in relation to
the possibility of living side by side with the constant noise pollution and harmful CO2 emissions.
The environment becomes one of the fundamental paradigms for the formulation of new residential
hypothesises which originate from a more structural relationship with the context in
which, on the protective green belt, a landscape is created in which to live (in the widest
sense). Nature and topography try out new urban possibilities in contexts which are today
considered marginal and extreme.

The theme is that of the instant house, A TEMPORARY RESIDENTIAL MINI-UNIT linked to
the presence of young people with high levels of territorial mobility connected to particular
metropolitan events.

The project envisages the search for locations in the vicinity of important infrastructure
systems (bypasses, motorways, airports, railways and new routes etc.) in which to locate
groups or individual elements of temporary residential units and their services.
The response to noise and atmospheric pollution will give shape to new settlements, not only
through the correct application of new technologies but also through the shape and position
of the manufactured articles, the use of open space and the relationship with the landscape
and the infrastructure. The new material must also contribute to an experimental strategy.

PRIZES
1st:1500 euros + 1:1 prototype
2nd: 1000 euros
3rd:750 euros

Sponsored by the Modular Building Institute and administered by the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS), the program challenges students to learn about modular building techniques and systems in the design of a modern and sustainable Miami Beach hotel. The competition is designed for North American design students of all ages. Total prize money is $7,225, including $2,500 for the first place winning design.

Competition Goal
The competition poses the design question, “What is the Ideal Theatre for teaching professional theatre”? This question is to be explored and answered by a “Team” composed of at least one theatre student currently enrolled in a college or university theatre program and one architectural student enrolled in an accredited architectural college or university program.

Each team member has a defined responsibility. The theatre students will act as the “Client” and the architectural students as the “Designer”. The “Client” is responsible to teach the “Designer” about the workings and artistry of Theatre! The “Client” will define the detail needs of the theater complex and provide at least one critique of the design produced by the “Designer.” It is desired that that the “Client” will remain an active member of the design process. The design solution MUST be the result of a “Conversation” between the “Client” and “Designer”. History proves the most successful theatre design solutions take into account all aspects and needs of theatre production, artist presentation and audience interaction.

The real estate developers’ interest in organizing an International Architecture Competition lies in the need to create an innovative concept as an alternative to the typical apartment buildings, at one of the most privileged sceneries in Lima (Peruvian Capital), at the mountains of the Camacho urbanization, by the Golf Course “Los Inkas”, in the district of Santiago de Surco.

The project consists about developing two tower models, one typical and another one at the corner, on a sloping ground, considering an existent spatial, urban and real estate proposal. The “Green 360” Project consists in developing 4 “loft” apartments in each building, designed to enjoy the exclusive view of the “Los Inkas Golf Club”, the city of Lima and the Pacific Ocean on a clear day. The towers should project a contemporary image, actual and front line, destined not only for the district in which it is to be built, but also for the global village.

Two San Francisco Bay Area housing non-profits, Suburban Alternatives Land Trust (SALT) and Northbay Family Homes (NFH) have, in the past 30 years, facilitated the building of 4,000 homes – half of them affordable to low-moderate income families. Together, SALT and NFH are sponsoring an open competition to develop ideas that optimize their site’s potential uses, including ideas that address the need for senior housing in a suburban setting. The Project site is located in the City of Novato, Marin County in a recently developed area known as “Bahia.” Construction is planned to begin upon securing financing.

Designers are encouraged to develop and present ideas that reflect SALT’s mission: assisting low-income individuals and families to secure good housing, become homeowners and improve their economic position by working with donors of land to maximize and leverage tax advantages and benefits generated in the course of developing a full array for land use options for each parcel, including affordable homes, jobs, recreation, agriculture and open space. Site planning and housing designs must demonstrate: innovative sustainable solutions that can also be applied to meet future housing needs, a zero net energy goal, multiple benefits including job creation, carbon and cost reduction, and opportunities for local food production/agriculture.

This competition will be conducted in two stages. The first stage will be open to all design professionals: architects, urban designers, landscape architects, engineers, and others who are interested in housing issues. All first stage submissions will be anonymous. A Competition Jury comprised of design professionals and community representatives will select the five most promising submissions to become Competition Finalists. Subject to financing, the Second Stage will proceed with each Finalist team receiving an honorarium toward their Second Stage competition costs, which will include design responses to Jury and community comments regarding their First Stage designs, and preparing a study model of their design. Second Stage teams must include at least one Architect licensed in the State of California. Association of out-of-state professionals with California-licensed colleagues (preferably those within an hours drive to the San Francisco Bay area) is permitted.

The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership has been selected by NYC DOT in the first round of the NYC Plaza Program, to oversee the design, construction, maintenance, and programming of a public pedestrian plaza on Myrtle Avenue between Grand Avenue and Emerson Place on two blocks of the existing service road. The pedestrian plaza is the result of a multi-year community planning process that began in the fall of 2005, during which the improvement of the avenue’s public spaces became a major emphasis as individuals expressed their desire to have public spaces to sit, eat, relax, people-watch, and to otherwise create a better sense of place.

DESIGNING THE MYRTLE AVENUE PEDESTRIAN PLAZA aims to further involve the community in the creation of a great public space on Myrtle Avenue, generating design and programming concepts that are progressive and sustainable, and that support a variety of user groups and activities while capturing the energy, diversity and dynamic character of our community.

The Call for Ideas is open to any person who wants to participate in the visioning and creation of a new public space for the community, including future users, and amateur and professional designers alike. Participants can enter as individuals or work collaboratively. We encourage submissions that take either of the following two formats:

Best Practices - Compelling examples from existing public places that can serve as best practices in guiding the design and management of the Plaza.

Original Designs - Plans and/or renderings that express your vision of the Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza, its features and amenities.

Applicants should prepare entries for submission by November 16, 2009. All entries will be reviewed by professional planners on staff and the Myrtle Avenue Pedestrian Plaza Advisory Committee. Selected entries will be displayed online, to gather community feedback and generate discussion about the design of the Pedestrian Plaza. All submissions collected through the Call for Ideas will be used to inform and advise the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership staff and Pedestrian Plaza Advisory Committee for initial and ongoing meetings with the professional design team, to be selected by NYC DOT in the fall of 2009. There will be additional opportunities for public involvement via community design charrettes, which will take place once the professional design team is assigned to the project.

Submission Guidelines

DESIGN CRITERIA
Submissions should consider:

Size / Dimension / Location – The plaza will be roughly 25,000 sq. ft., located on the narrow service road parallel to Myrtle Avenue between Grand Avenue and Emerson Place (two blocks long). See attached street geometry.

Amenities – The design should strive to include, at a minimum, the following features: (1) a small, semi-permanent structure to house a potential concession, (2) concepts for incorporating permanent public art into the plaza, (3) space(s) designated for temporary public art installations, (4) the planting of many more trees and greenery, (5) abundant seating (both fixed and movable), (6) space for bicycle parking, and (7) a bus stop shelter for the eastbound B54.

Sustainability – Designs should incorporate principles of sustainability in design (via storm water retention, paving, greening, lighting, etc.) and materials selection (the BID will be responsible for plaza maintenance; materials should be relatively low cost and easy to maintain).

Programming and Sociability – The plaza should allow programming opportunities for all ages and abilities, encourage social interaction, feature flexible areas that can accommodate a number of uses (performances, temporary markets, special events), incorporate passive recreation, and encourage use by a diverse cross section of the community.

SUBMISSION CRITERIA AND HOW TO SUBMIT
Entries can take all shapes and sizes; from professional renderings to amateur illustrations, sketches, and photos.
Each submission should include:
1. The name of the design and contact information for all individuals contributing to the submission
2. An explanation of how the idea addresses the design criteria outlined above and any further details necessary for understanding the design, concept and special features of the plaza
3. A brief discussion of public programming options, the social use of the space, and long-term management
4. No more than ten images.

E-mail JPG or PDF files to sarah@myrtleavenue.org. Include the name of the design and lead author of the project in the document names. Any large scale drawings or images can be mailed or dropped off at our office at 472 Myrtle Avenue, 2nd Floor, Brooklyn, NY 11205.
