This is the first of several competitions run to identify a range of possible design solutions, against a broad conceptual brief, with no commitment to build. They will be for significant design sites around the world. The aim of the Tiananmen Square Landscape Compeition is to generate debate and ideas for re-designing part of the most important urban space in the history of Chinese Civilization. We hope this will also set a new course for Eastern Landscape Architecture, helping in the development of an ecologically and culturally distinctive design tradition. This is a Web 2.0 landscape design competition running from March 2009 to June 2010.

Competition Entries should be published to Flickr as soon as they are ready. It is an ideas competetion so if two people submit similar ideas, priority will be given to the design idea which was published and added to the Tiananman Square Landscape Flickr Group first.

Access is key to unlocking cities’ potential

Cities have the potential to cater to the full range of human needs and wants. The extent to which they do so depends on “access” – on whether their inhabitants are able to take advantage of all that cities have to offer.

The Schindler Award has the goal of improving access and overall mobility for all city dwellers, irrespective of their age, status or physical capabilities. To that end, it challenges young architects to think beyond form, light and materials and to focus on the needs of the people who will eventually inhabit the structures and spaces that they design.

This means taking account of the diversity of cities, and recognizing the right of everyone – children, young people, parents, workers, the elderly and people with special needs – to be able to move freely and to share and enjoy public spaces.

Visions for an enhanced and accessible “Olympic Park Berlin”

The task is aimed at transforming this somewhat neglected area of the Olympic grounds into a pleasing, functional and fully accessible sport and leisure compound. To achieve this goal, the following tasks must be fulfilled:

On the urban scale:
- Create a master plan to reorganize existing and new functions inside a perimeter of approximately 750 by 850 meters;
- Devise a new access route from the urban transit station and the carpark to the sport facilities and the ‘Waldbühne’.

On the project scale:
- Design a new sports and congress hotel for 150 guests;
- Upgrade the ‘Waldbühne’ to modern standards of ‘Access for All’

The jury felt it is especially fitting that the principles of ‘Access for All’ should be applied to a place used by the Nazis to symbolize their imagined superiority and policies of exclusion.

Design Exchange has partnered with Roxul to challenge Canadian Architecture and Interior Design students to recreate a living space within a home.

Design Brief

The challenge is to create a living space, using the provided plan of a typical unfinished basement. The space may be designed to contain any combination of a small washroom, laundry facilities, a home theatre system, a small home office area, and a convertible area to accommodate overnight guests.

Projects should utilize the Roxul products ComfortBatt and/or Safe’n’Sound, maximizing comfort and safety for the end user. Submitted projects should detail where, why, and how the Roxul products have been incorporated.

The submission should contain an overall sense of the renovation of the space, through floor plans, elevations, and details. A written description (of no more that 500 words) must accompany the submission, detailing how the project meets the design criteria and the development process.

We are looking for innovative design ideas surrounding renovation projects that can inspire consumers. Keeping in mind the Roxul slogan: ‘All projects start with ROXUL’, simply add innovation and creativity to come up with a winning design.

The 2009/2010 Leading Edge Student Design Competition seeks to support and enhance the study of sustainable and energy-efficient building practices in architectural education. With our 15th competition, we invite students and instructors of architecture and design to use the competition as a framework to explore the use of new materials and strategies for building, and the integration of aesthetics and technology for high-performance, cutting-edge architecture that approaches the goal of zero-net energy use.

A zero-net energy building generates enough on-site renewable energy to equal or exceed the amount of energy needed to operate the building. This is also known as net-zero site energy. Since a significant proportion of the nation’s use of fossil fuels comes from heating and cooling buildings, creating zero-net buildings is an important way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and fight global warming.

This year, the competition focuses on the coastal city of Long Beach, California. Students entering Challenge 1 will design a zero-net energy Workforce Training Center; students entering Challenge 2 will design a zero-net energy Student Residence. The projects will be located on adjacent sites on Long Beach Boulevard.

Competition Objectives

The competition objectives are to encourage and reward excellence in architectural planning and design that integrates environmentally responsive design strategies.

Competition participants will have the opportunity to:

Explore energy efficiency as a basic standard of building design, and the foundation of zero-net design.
Incorporate principles of sustainability in the choice of building materials, water use and building design.
Investigate new building materials and methodologies that contribute to sustainable or energy-efficient design.
Understand the impact of solar orientation, wind orientation, building massing, construction methods, and material choices on building function and energy use.
Develop an awareness of appropriate technology for particular building types, regional climates, and site location.
Explore state-of-the-art computer modeling tools for predicting and evaluating the impact of design decisions on building performance and energy conservation.
Begin to understand the requirements and implications of sustainable energy generation on urban building sites.

Among the questions we seek to answer through this competitive event are: “How can we use design to bring to connect a community to positives of its past while bringing the all the benefits of today’s technologies?” Also, “What are ways we can utilize form and function to instill worth, pride, and hope to regions of disenfranchisement and disillusionment?

Specifically, challenge one is to spur greater urban renewal of this locale through the proposal of a design for a Chicago Union Stockyards Museum & Education Center incorporating the landmark gate and expanding the park. The second design challenge is provide sustainable residential spaces which encourage assimilation and foster dignity, community and opportunities for immediate vocational participation to immigrant communities currently dwelling in less than desirable conditions in many Western European countries and in the U.S.

An open design competition is being sponsored by the Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial organization (ACBHM, Inc.), a private non-profit foundation chartered for the purpose of erecting the Memorial, in co-operation with the City of Atlantic City, which has dedicated a superb site for this purpose. Our competition will be advertised nationally and internationally, and juried by a world class panel of experts in the field of architecture and design. Responses are welcomed from throughout the world.

THE DESIGN COMPETITION PROGRAM: The competition is an open, two-stage design competition. At the first stage, digital submission of the design concept will be online only. These will be judged anonymously by members of our distinguished Jurors, who may choose six to ten finalists. Each finalist will be awarded an honorarium of $2,500 to develop a three-dimensional model and a fully realized scheme for the site. All final presentations will be publicly exhibited and judged at a convocation of the Jurors, and the winner will be declared at a public ceremony. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial organization will enter into good faith negotiations with the winning competitor for a contract to provide the services necessary to realize the Memorial. Concurrently the design will be reviewed by the planning board and fine arts board of the city of Atlantic City. In the event the winning design is eventually built, the winner will be awarded a commission to realize the winning design.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE: This competition seeks to stimulate fresh thinking about public memorials, and invites ideas from diverse fields. The requirements for the Memorial and how it occupies the site are as unconstrained as possible. Participants are encouraged to contemplate the meaning of the Holocaust and genocide in our lives today, and to invent a fitting design for this time and this place. We look to our competitors to propose the appropriate metaphors and forms for such a Memorial.

A FINAL THOUGHT:The Holocaust is surely among the darkest moments in modern history and all recorded civilization. Its infamous accounts mandate that mankind never again tolerate the unjust brutalizatiion and destruction of any group or individual. Yet, in spite of the Holocaust, history continues to repeat itself. This Memorial will be dedicated to all future generations to stand in unity against such wholesale victimization and genocide. Our goal is to create a Memorial that shall raise awareness in the minds of visitors to man’s unconsciousable inhumanity to man. The Atlantic City Boardwalk Holocaust Memorial shall stand as witness and barrier against the future repetition of any such reprehensible acts.

With the ongoing shrinkage of available and suitable space to meet the residential needs of burgeoning urban populations, designers and developers are looking at the use of vertical communities to achieve housing goals. The 2010 International Skyscraper Challenge affords today’s future designers an opportunity to assume the profile of professionals as they incorporate a team of skilled partners to design, construct and market a tall building for a site within the dense urban population of Mexico City – the 3rd largest metropolitan region in the world. If this is the sort of challenge which intrigues and motivates you, you are just that’s the kind of visionary we’re seeking to compete in the 2010 Mock Architecture Firm Competition! If you believe you have what it takes to put together a team of success-minded drafters, graphic artists, engineers, and communicators to incorporate your own simulated architecture firm then make plans now to be in Chicago, April 15-17 for the 2010 Mock Firms Finals.

Designed by Victorian architects Joseph & Smithem and one of Europe’s first social housing developments, Affinity Sutton’s Bethnal Green estate in East London celebrates its 100th birthday this year. Originally home to some 400 people, Bethnal Green offered an escape from London’s East End slums and a decent home.

Today we are challenging Part 2 students to Make Bethnal Green by asking them — What would you build on the same site today and how would that design make a positive contribution to the environment?

Brief

The Make Bethnal Green Competition will follow a student open ideas format - there is no commitment to necessarily implement any of the design ideas submitted. The anonymous, first phase invites RIBA Part 2 students to consider what they would build on the Bethnal Green site today, taking into account the 21st Century sustainability agenda, modern building techniques and architectural approaches, together with the financial constraints of the affordable housing sector.

A Judging Panel will identify 10 finalists which they feel have responded best to the challenges set out in this Competition Brief. Anonymity will then be lifted with generic and scheme specific feedback provided to each finalist. During the Easter 2010 recess, each finalist will be invited to refine their ideas during a week long placement with one of Affinity Sutton’s framework architect partners.

Each finalist will be randomly assigned to one of the 10 participating architect partners, unless there is a clear geographic advantage of assigning a particular finalist to a specific practice. The placement may also include spending some time with one of Affinity Sutton’s employers agent partners.

Each host practice will be asked to provide feedback on the finalist’s performance during the week-long placement, which will be made available to the Judging Panel to help inform their decision. The Prize Winner will be selected following presentation of design proposals to the Judging Panel at final interview in late April 2010.

At the conclusion of the competition, Affinity Sutton and RIBA will showcase the ideas submitted to Make Bethnal Green via an on-line gallery. Best practice examples may also be incorporated within future editions of Affinity Sutton’s Design Guide. Once anonymity has been lifted, authorship of design ideas will be duly credited and recognised in all such material, publicity etc.

With the Blue Award, the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University of Vienna, Department of Spatial and Sustainable Design is holding for the first time an international student competition on sustainable architecture. The launch date is set for November 10, 2009 and is open to architecture students worldwide!

With the debut of the international Blue Award, the Department of Spatial and Sustainable Design, from the Institute of Architecture and Design, is announcing an award for the best student works in the topic of sustainable architecture and building culture. The opening presentation of the Blue Award will take place on November 10, 2009 at the TU Vienna. From that point on, works from Bachelor, Master or Diploma studies can be submitted. The competition is open worldwide to students of architecture, regional planning and urbanism. Prizes totaling 15,000 euros will be awarded.

The competition was initiated by the architect Univ. Prof. Mag.arch. Françoise-Hélène Jourda, director of the Department of Spatial and Sustainable Design, and functions under the patronage of the International Union of Architects (UIA).

The award’s main purpose is to encourage the topic of sustainability in architecture, regional planning and urbanism. Concurrently, it shall recognize and award students and teachers dedicated in pursuing the topic in their studies. The Blue Award aims at helping standardize the exchange between various architecture schools and faculties.

The Blue Award will be handed out in 3 categories

The Blue Award will be distributed among the three categories „Urban Transformation and Development“, „ Building with Ecological Systems“ and „ Building in Existing Structures“.

The emphasis of the category “Urban Transformation and Development“ includes topics from urban redevelopment, renewal, and restructuring of existing city fabric to development of new housing structures and typologies. Concepts dealing with self-sufficient housing developments, environment friendly forms of mobility, and new interpretations of open/public spaces in urban areas are equally important to this category.

In the category “Building with Ecological Systems”, submitted projects are to reveal the basic principles of sustainable planning and construction, including its social, economical and ecological factors, in the form of an architectonic design.

The topics of the category “Building in Existing Structures” are methods of renovation, adaptation and conversion. Beyond these usual themes, projects will be awarded which succeed in increasing significantly the average longevity and usage capacity of existing structures, as well as projects which reduce the volumetric demand of new construction.

JURY and EXHIBITION

An international jury, presided by Prof. Thomas Herzog, university professor and architect in Munich, and also expert on sustainable building, will choose the prize winners in each of the three categories previously mentioned. The awards ceremony will take place in April 2010 at the TU Vienna.

Public services, shops and jobs are found in the centres of small towns of less than 20,000 habitants and large villages for reasons connected with the history of urban development and town planning.
Small towns and village communities, where there is a strong potential for the quality-of-life with nature and national heritage, are areas where town planning and rurality can combine, respecting ecological constraints. Sustainable development in these territories will provide an alternative to the urban concentrations in large built-up areas’
Please note : Territories and project sites located in large built-up areas can be introduced in a proposal…

The purpose of these developments is to improve the quality and the attractiveness of the living environment in interurban areas. For example “a town centre” connected by “eco-friendly transport” to a ‘public square’ and to a ‘park’ … served by an intercommunal transport network provides an answer to these concerns. Based on these existing situations, any improvements made to the quality of life will highlight:

That conditions of access to the urban centres are specific to each territory (i,e, coastline, mountain, plain, large built-up areas) and take into account the location of centres for employment, services and public amenities
The use of new means of transport aiming to reduce or replace the use of the individual car
Easy and safe use of the urban centre and its environment by ‘everyone’.
Quality of life will be evaluated using the three criteria in the ‘Referential for the quality of life’ with priority given to the respecting references below :

architectural quality: improvements to facilitate access to public buildings and areas
quality of community life : possibility of easier access to the urban centre for everyone
respect of the environment : savings in parking areas and energy could be made, depending on the means of transport used.

The 2009-2010 discussion topic for the “Robert Auzelle seminar” is common to the national prize for elected representatives and professionals and the international competition for academics from all disciplines. The French ’eco-friendly transport’ vocabulary sheet for urban art along with other vocabulary sheets is a referential teaching aid.

The Metropolis Next Generation® Design Competition was created in 2003 to promote activism, social involvement, and entrepreneurship in young designers. Metropolis saw the need for a new type of competition, one that went beyond the usual beauty pageants for finished projects, a competition that would generate and reward ideas.

Metropolis celebrates the next generation by rewarding imaginative young designers at large companies and recognizing the hard work of those striving with their own young firms or on their own as well as students—while some designers have a proposal ready and waiting, others are at the beginning of the process with an undefined desire to create and can use a kick start.

The Next Generation® winners and runners-up are a testament to the success of this mission. Each project recognized has embodied the core values of good design—incorporating systems thinking, sustainability, accessibility, materials exploration, historic relevance, and technology—while forwarding our thinking on what designers can accomplish. The breadth of proposals has been stunning: building projects, urban planning and community building schemes, responsive interior environments, population pressure issues, new materials, ergonomics, product design, social and housing solutions, environmental management, water purity, and waste disposal in crisis situations and so on. The prize of $10,000 in seed money for developing the projects, plus the publicity they receive, have helped winners’ and runners-ups’ projects leap from the drawing board to implementation and production.

Art Directors Club launches inaugural student brief with Nissan. Students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate level programs in advertising, graphic design, photography, illustration and new media are eligible to enter ADC’s co-presented brief based competition.

Nissan cube® is unlike any other car on the American road. Its funky exterior is punctuated by an asymmetrical rear window and a low, wide stance. Its comfy interior is a place to have fun with friends. It offers multiple options for self expression with features like a removable shag dashboard carpet, multi-color interior mood lighting, and configurable storage. Cube is part car, part social destination.

ADC is inviting students to address these questions:
- How would you introduce cube?
- What creative would you run?
- Where would you run the creative for maximum reach and efficiency?

Develop a campaign, or concepts, that makes Nissan cube a part of our target’s life. The campaign shouldn’t feel like marketing, it should feel like a natural extension of where our target goes and what they do. To this end, use channels and communication vehicles you feel are most appropriate to our target’s lifestyle and what the model represents.

The Ville de Montréal is pleased to announce a nationwide ideas competition for the redesigning of the area around the Champ-de-Mars métro station. The purpose of the competition is to solicit explorations and illustrations of a variety of development concepts made possible by the planned covering of the Ville-Marie expressway and the potential reconfiguration of its exit ramps.

Champ-de-Mars station, with its magnificent glassworks by renowned artist Marcelle Ferron, is one of the few landmarks remaining from the time before the construction of the Ville-Marie expressway. The immediate perimeter of the station forms a link between downtown Montréal and Old Montréal, and is one of the main pedestrian access routes to the historic district.

Refelecting on the Quality of Public Spaces in Montréal

The competition invites entrants to submit development proposals that integrate smoothly with the existing public spaces and take into account the current and future built environment, including the impending Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. Proposals must promote citizen appropriation of the urban environment and provide a development framework that facilitates movement through the city.

This design competition is the third to be implemented in the wake of the commitments announced by the Mayor of Montréal at the Pecha Kucha Night for Elected Officials on September 30, 2008. It aims to provide tangible impetus for creativity in made-in-Montréal design and architecture and widen access to public design commissions to the largest possible number of practitioners.

About the Competition

The concept competition is being held on an anonymous-entry basis and is open to all design professionals, students or consortiums whose main place of business is located in Canada. It is a single-stage competition, with two submission categories, one for professionals and the other for students. The language of the competition is French. However, the conceptual approach may include a text in English.

Proposals received will be studied and evaluated by a jury on the basis of the following criteria:

enhancement of the architecture and glassworks of Champ-de-Mars métro station
reinforcement of the pedestrian links and access routes leading from the station to all of the surrounding areas
innovative and esthetic qualities of the project
atmosphere created by the planned action

The jury members are:

Melvin Charney, architect
Odile Decq, architect and Director of the École Spéciale d’Architecture, Paris
Jacques Des Rochers, Curator of Canadian Art, Montréal Museum of Fine Arts
Michel Dionne, architect, Cooper, Robertson & Partners, New York
Raphaël Fischler, urban planner and professor at the School of Urban Planning, McGill University
Mario Masson, landscape architect and Division Manager, Service du développement culturel, de la qualité du milieu de vie et de la diversité ethnoculturelle, Ville de Montréal
Alessandra Ponte, associate professor, School of Architecture, Université de Montréal
Philippe Poullaouec-Gonidec, landscape architect and holder of the UNESCO Chair in Landscape and Environmental Design at Université de Montréal

Instructions for Prospective Entrants

Registration is free and mandatory. Each entrant must complete the form available here, by January 15, 2010. Download the competition regulations here.

In a time of economic upheaval and rapid social change design will have an outstanding role in the future. Vienna as an important young design location can make a substantial contribution to this.

MAK and departure therefore announce a first-time-ever joint ideas competition: under the heading of Project Vienna – A Design Strategy proposals are invited for innovative design strategies and concepts. Design must go beyond mere object modeling and surface cosmetics and be understood as an integral part of cultural creation. Design informs our everyday life, our culture, and our sense of aesthetics beyond fleeting fashions and styles – design is the mirror of our civilization.

The ideas competition targets designers who represent a broad notion of design, who interact with other disciplines or network with artists, architects, and other creative professionals. The focus is on the significance of design as a concrete possibility and relevant practice of intervening in, and informing social structures. After the decline of modernist design utopias and avant-garde attempts at an encompassing redesign of our sphere of living, the call is now for independent and intelligent contemporary models for the Vienna of the 21st century.

http://www.landartgenerator.org/competition.html

The Land Art Generator Initiative is the artworld’s responsible answer to the question:

“what comes after oil?”

The long-term goal of the Land Art Generator Initiative is to design and construct a series of land art installations that uniquely combine aesthetic intrigue and artistic concept with clean energy generation. The LAGI viewing platforms will be tourist destinations, drawing people from around the world to experience the beauty of the collaborative artworks. At the same time, the art itself will continuously distribute clean energy into the electrical grid, with the sculptures having the potential to provide power to thousands of homes.

We are living in a world in which the climate is deeply affected by the burning of fossil fuels for energy generation and in which it is estimated by the oil industry that petroleum reserves will be mostly used up by the time children born today reach middle age.

So what can the artworld do in order to stimulate change at an even faster pace? Why not create works of art that themselves provide clean, infinitely renewable energy to the world? These artworks can be large-scale installations related to the genre of land-art. They can be profound and lasting statements of purpose. Their message can reach across generations and continents.

The time is now to do whatever we can to make the shift to cleaner forms of energy. Art has the power to reach the hearts and the minds of the world, and it is this power that we must tap into if we are to see substantive change.

This open call to interdisciplinary teams is the first step in the process of inititating this change. The winning proposal will be the first in line to be constructed. Once completed, it will be the first of its kind in the world.

An exhibit of all qualified proposals will be held at the conclusion of the competition. This exhibit will provide a forum for a public presentation and discussion of all of the works. It is the intention of LAGI to have this exhibit travel to as many venues as possible in the time after the competition period in order to broaden the audience that is a part of the dialogue.

The designs should be considered first and foremost as Land Art Installations. The considerations for energy generation should come in a close second. What this means is that the installations are art first, power plants second. There will most-likely be sacrifices to be made in terms of efficiency of energy generation in order that the design function primarily on a conceptual and aesthetic level. The objective is not to design and engineer a device that provides the cheapest KWh or the most energy per square meter of land.

eVolo - 2010 SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION
http://www.evolo-arch.com

eVolo – to study, to develop, to evolve, to fly away…

The launch of eVolo Magazine is a step closer to our objective to provide a forum for showcasing the most innovative, the most avant-garde designs that will define architecture in this century.

After several years of organizing the annual Skyscraper Competition it has become a renowned architectural prize around the world. The best projects of each competition are widely published from architecture, design, and fashion publications to technology, business, and entertainment magazines. The winning projects are also featured in websites, television documentaries, and galleries.

We would like to invite students and professional architects, engineers, and designers to take part in the 2010 Skyscraper Competition. The main idea of this contest is to examine the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community and the skyscraper and urban living.

In the last few years we have seen hundreds of new skyscrapers been developed around the world without careful consideration to the context or environment. There is a constant lack of urban planning and poor architectural design without intellectual or perceptual enjoyment. The aim of the competition is to push our imagination to redefine the term skyscraper through the use of new materials, technology, aesthetics, programs, and spatial organizations. Globalization, environmental warming, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution are just some of the multi-layered elements that should be taken in consideration.

There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to propose the most innovative projects for this fascinating architectural genre. Ultimately, the designs should help the environment, restructure our cities and improve our way of life. Immediate

Zerofootprint is proud to launch the Zerofootprint Building Re-Skinning Competition. The goal of this competition is to advance the state-of-the-art in retrofitting existing building structures through better design and improved materials and technology, thus creating retrofitting systems that can be scaled to a large number of buildings and deployed globally. Older wasteful buildings account for nearly 40% of all greenhouse gas emissions, and it is our wish that by creating a smart, reproducible, beautiful, cost-effective, and energy efficient scheme, a scalable solution may be found. More information can be found here: http://communities.zerofootprint.net/building-re-skinning-competition/

Judging the competition are some of the world’s most respected architects and environmentalists, including William McDonough, Edward Mazria, Stefan Benisch, Andrew Bowerbank, Thomas Auer, Judith DiMaio, and George Baird.

The competition will be judged on the aesthetics, energy efficiency, smart technology, return on investment and potential as a solution for a large number of buildings. The deadline for the submission of designs is January 10, 2010.

The Z-Prize:
The winning 5 entries will be monitored for a period of 3 years after completion of the retrofit to examine and compare how they actually perform in practice. The Z-Prize will be given to the building that has most reduced the energy per square foot, averaged over the 3 years of monitoring. We hope to make the Z-Prize, the largest prize in the world for architecture so as to encourage high quality worldwide participation.

Zerofootprint is an organization dedicated to a mass reduction in global environmental impact. We provide software and services to individuals, governments, universities and corporations that measure and manage carbon footprints and engages employees and citizens worldwide in combating climate change.

The ZEROprize
Addressing an Urgent Global Need
North America’s existing building infrastructure accounts for up to 40% of all greenhouse gases produced in the United States and Canada. In cities that figure can surpass 65%. Older buildings while structurally sound often waste precious energy and are a major source of the greenhouse gas emissions polluting our cities.

Zerofootprint is offering the ZEROprize to the design team who can take an older concrete high-rise structure and, using re-skinning along with other retrofitting technologies, reduce its carbon, water, and energy footprint to net zero while also maintaining the highest architectural design standards.

To secure the ZEROprize, a candidate building will be required to have a net zero footprint for one year.

The Re-Skinning Award
In addition to the ZEROprize, the supporting Zerofootprint Re-Skinning Award will be offered every year. The Zerofootprint Re-Skinning Award is meant to attract state-of-the-art retrofitted and re-skinned buildings that are exceptional, but do not meet the performance standards of the ZEROprize.

The objective of the Re-Skinning award is to stimulate global interest in new building technologies, an area that the media tends to underreport, and accelerate innovation in a critical industrial sector. Through its website, the Re-Skinning Award will also provide building owners everywhere with quantitative information explaining how green, retrofitting technologies can reduce energy demand, clean our cities, and save them money.

The Re-Skinning Award entry date is January 10, 2010.

Clients worldwide have become more demanding. They want aesthetically and creatively appealing designs, better technology to have everything at their fingertips, and facilities that allow them to indulge or relax, just a call away. Also, gone are the days of heavily formal designs in hotels. The new breed of adventurous designers and travelers has made the hotels rethink their set beliefs about guest service and hotel design.

Travelers want to be surprised or wowed each time they walk in. The reason for a more casual ambience in hotels can also be attributed to the need of frequent travelers to feel at home. Only a decade back, renovations and would be carried out at a gap of five to seven years. The periodicity has now increased to three to five years. Additionally, as business travel has increased all across the globe, new hotels are constantly being built in major destination cities.

This has increased the workload on designers, but eased their work because of the hotel’s enthusiasm to experiment. Modular building is one way to help maintain all the aspects of a modern hotel within the newly shortened lifespan and demand for “the next best thing.”

The competition asks students to learn about modular building techniques and systems in the design of a modern and sustainable Miami Beach hotel. Objectives for the competition include:
1.To research, respond to and highlight the unique aspects of designing a modern hotel that serves the selected site and community of Miami Beach, FL
2.To learn about and utilize the modular building process to develop a mutli-story design that meets both the program requirements and promotes advancements for future modular buildings
3.To design a facility that utilizes sustainable features in the areas of thermal comfort, indoor air quality, day lighting, acoustics, energy efficiency, resource strategy, aesthetics, and economic practicality (ability to attain LEED certification is preferred but not required)
4.To develop a design that compliments the existing buildings and natural surroundings of the community both now and into the future
5.To develop a design that reflects the unique culture, history and climate of Miami Beach site

Winning designs will be awarded $2500 for first place, $1500 for second place, $750 for third place, or $500 for each honorable mention (3).

For more information on the competition, to download the program or to register you or your team (teams may be up to four students) please visit the competition Web site at http://www.aias.org/modularbuilding.

Exploration of housing typologies reveals vast the potential of overlaying urban, contextual, cultural, social, and life cycle flows toward determining new architectonic strategies for the future. The d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore, document, analyze, transform, and deploy innovative approaches to residential urbanism, architecture, interiors, and designed objects.

The competition calls for transformative solutions that advance sustainable thought, building performance, and social interaction through study of intrinsic environmental geometries, social behaviors, urban implications, and programmatic flows. Special emphasis may be placed on housing concepts that investigate dialogues including engagement of internal/external socio-economic diversity, change/adaptability over time, public/private realm connectivity, and permanence/impermanence of materiality. d3 challenges participants to rethink strategies for investigating residential design from macro-to-micro scales ranging from urban—promoting broader physical interconnectivity; communal—exploiting an interaction of units with shared facilities; and internal—examining the interior particularity of the unit, individual, or family in housing design toward promoting identity, ownership, and intimacy.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself. Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with residential buildings. Accordingly, design submissions must be environmentally responsible while fostering inventive conceptual living solutions for today and tomorrow. Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable residential future.

The d3 Housing Tomorrow Competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner, from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of the interior realm. Although there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or residential building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.

The Challenge:

Freegreen.com is challenging you to develop affordable green home designs that fit contemporary lifestyles. There are a lot of people who want a new home but don’t want a generic suburban McMansion. The American dream is not one size fits all. Our dreams are changing, and FreeGreen is challenging, you, the residential design community, to develop new ideas for people who don’t dream of the generic. The single family home is the most commonly built building in America, but less than 5 percent of the homes built in America have direct involvement with an Architect. The challenge of the Who’s Next competition is to re-envision the typical suburban home in an ecologically conscious manner that also reflects today’s modern lifestyle. Competitors will select one of two user profiles (see right) and design a single family home that fits their chosen profile. All homes designed in this contest must be 1800 Sq. Ft. or less.

Why You Should Enter:

It’s Easy

All you have to deliver is nine images and image descriptions. No boards, no presentations, no complications. Just nine slides that will be uploaded in a Facebook style onto the competition website.

It’s Affordable

Our entry fee is just $50. Our goal is to get, and promote as many entrants as possible so we created and entry fee that is manageable.

It’s Useful

There is of course a cash prize of $5,000. We expect to drive over 500K visitors to our contest viewing and voting site, on which you and/or your firm will be promoted. For the top three entries, FreeGreen will turn your designs into a house plan. FreeGreen will place this house plan on our Open Source Site for sale (at whatever price you want), and you will retain the rights to this house plan using it as you wish. You will also receive 70% of all revenue from sales made of your plan on the FreeGreen Open Source Site.

With all the different actors needed to erect a building the architect always has to enter into a dialogue. The end result will be a compromise, whether you like it or not. A compromise is understood as a concept of finding agreement through communication, through a mutual acceptance of terms—often involving variations or aberration from an original goal or desire. Some architects may understand compromise as a capitulation, referring to a “surrender” of objectives, principles, or material, in the process of negotiating an agreement. Is “compromise” an agreement that no party is really satisfied with? Or is the compromise, in many cases, the most appropriate answer? An increasing number of young architects tend to compromise their beliefs, their health, their social life. Work long hours to endure in the so called world of architecture, where fame and media define who is going to be the next star architect. How much do you need to compromise in order to belong to this glamorous world? Glamour denotes luxury and elegance, creating an impression of attraction and fascination, an impression which is better than reality.

Deadline for abstracts is week 47. Deadline for final submissions is week 50.
Join us making issue #3: Glamorous Compromise and send your ideas and abstracts to: submission@conditionsmagazine.com

The High Bridge International Ideas Competition

Trespa Design Centre
62 Greene Street NY, NY 10012
FREE Admission
RSVP: Please e-mail enyacompetitions@gmail.com

September 10, 2009, NEW YORK, NY. The Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), AIA New York Chapter, is pleased to announce its fourth biennial international ideas competition, High Bridge: Bronx, Building Cultural Infrastructure (HB:BX). Please join us at the Trespa Design Centre in SoHo, September 10 at 6:00 pm to help us celebrate its launch.

This competition is open to all emerging professionals, including, but not limited to, architects, artists, engineers, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners who have completed their education at the undergraduate or graduate level within 10 years of the competition announcement (September 10, 2009). The registration deadline is November 18, 2009, and the submission deadline is January 18, 2010. An online gallery will feature all submitted design entries. In addition, cash prizes and inclusion in an exhibition and publication will be awarded to the winning designs.

HB:BX is an open ideas competition to design an arts center that culturally reinforces the physical connection between the Manhattan and Bronx High Bridge communities of New York City. Working in cooperation with the arts organizations Artists Unite and the Bronx Museum of the Arts, ENYA means to draw awareness to the current efforts to restore and reopen the historic High Bridge. This competition is a forum to explore the urban and community improvement opportunities that may come with the achievement of such a momentous milestone. Thus, ENYA challenges designers to explore how disused structures can be reprogrammed into elements of a vibrant urban cultural center. Entrants are also challenged to rethink the relationship between existing infrastructure (aqueduct, railway, highway) and the contemporary urban context. These issues, universally relevant to any growing city, take on a more site-specific nature when considering the importance of the High Bridge and the topographic challenges posed by the steep riverbanks of the Harlem River. Also defining this competition are the unique clients who ask entrants to reconsider architecture’s role in the creation, display, and experience of viewing art in one of the world’s most culturally vibrant cities.

General information about HB:BX follows:
Type: International Ideas Competition.
[Note: The competition results are intended to generate ideas for the site and will not result in actual development by ENYA or other parties involved.]

Registration Begins: Sept 10, 2009
Early Registration Ends: Nov 15, 2009
Late Registration Ends: Dec 15, 2009
Submission Deadline: January 15, 2010 (postmarked)
Open to: Emerging Designers
Entry Fee: $35 Student, $65 Individual, $110 Team (2-4), $300 Group(5+)

November 17, 2009, NEW YORK, NY. The Emerging New York Architects Committee (ENYA), AIA NY Chapter, is pleased to announce the jury and extended registration deadlines for its fourth biennial international ideas competition, High Bridge: Bronx, Building Cultural Infrastructure (HB:BX). Register for the competition online at http://www.enyacompetitions.org.

This competition is open to all emerging professionals, including, but not limited to, architects, artists, engineers, landscape architects, urban designers, and planners who have completed their education at the undergraduate or graduate level within 10 years of the competition announcement An online gallery will feature all submitted design entries. In addition cash prizes and inclusion in an exhibition and a publication are awarded to the winning designs.

HB: BX is an open ideas competition to design an arts center that culturally reinforces the physical connection between the Manhattan and Bronx High Bridge communities of New York City. Entrants are also challenged to rethink the relationship between existing infrastructure (aqueduct, railway, and highway) and the contemporary urban context. These issues, universally relevant to any growing city, take on a more site-specific nature when considering the importance of the High Bridge and the topog
raphic challenges posed by the steep riverbanks of the Harlem River. Also defining this competition are the unique clients who ask entrants to reconsider architecture’s role in the creation, display, and experience of viewing art in one of the world’s most culturally vibrant cities.

General information about HB: BX follows:

Type: International Ideas Competition. The competition results are intended to generate ideas for the site and will not result in actual development by ENYA or other parties involved.

Entry Fee: Add $5 for all categories after November 20, 2009.
$35 Student, $65 Individual, $110 Team (2-4), $300 Group (5+)
Awards: $5,000 (ENYA prize), $2,000 (2nd Place), $1,000 (3rd Place), $1,000 (Student)

The AIA is hosting its first ever design competition on Facebook—the AIA Facebook Young Designers Challenge. The competition is targeting emerging professionals, and is open to all AIAS members, all Assoc. AIA members, and all AIA young architect members. (The AIA defines young architects as being licensed 10 years or less.)

The AIA is asking designers to submit new, unbuilt building projects that address America’s most pressing design needs for the 21st century. This can include, but is not limited to: sustainability, public infrastructure, affordable housing, retrofitting suburbs and other resource-intensive built environments, urban farming, and rehabilitating dilapidated urban cores. This requirement is intentionally flexible. The most important factor is that each design offers an innovative solution to a concrete and unsolved problem. The winning designer will be announced in AIArchitect with a feature article on their design in January.

Let’s see what tomorrow’s generation of architects has to offer America today!

Køge Kyst, the urban development company, wishes to run an idea competition for the development of a new urban area in Køge, based on the company’s areas in and around Køge Havn (Harbour), and the relationship of these areas to their neighbouring areas.

Køge Kyst is a partnership involving the Municipality of Køge and Realdania Arealudvikling.

The idea competition is to be held as a 2-phase parallel competition, i.e. a combination of a competition and a parallel assignment. The objective of the parallel competition is to lay the foundations for a consolidated development plan for the new part of Køge, which comprises three sub-areas: the Station Area, the Collstrop Site and Søndre Havn. The total area in question covers almost 24 hectares.

Køge’s position in Denmark will be reinforced appreciably in the immediate future with the implementation of a new railway connection between Copenhagen and Ringsted via Køge, and through the establishment of the Femern bridge connection.

Køge Kyst wishes to make use of these opportunities through a high-profile strategic project involving the town opening up towards the water and linking the new part of town to the historical town centre. At the same time, the town will utilise its infrastructural position to play a key regional role in the fields of residential expansion, retail trade, culture and commerce.

Over the coming 20 years, it is expected that more than 300,000 m2 of newly constructed floor space will be established in the three sub-areas, divided between residences, commercial premises and cultural facilities. It is expected that the residential area alone will be expanded by 150,000 m2 of floor space, the retail area by 20,000 m2, and the commercial premises area by 100,000 m2 - corresponding to approx. 4,000 workplaces.

Køge Kyst is therefore inviting inter-disciplinary teams with the necessary competences to participate in the development of the town of Køge, based around the company’s areas on the Køge Havn (Harbour) site. The invitation applies to Danish, foreign and mixed teams.

Køge Kyst has a vision for the urban development project - consisting of six “vision points” - and this vision is to be the consistent theme for both the urban development project and the parallel competition.

The interdisciplinary teams are to demonstrate their competences with regard to the following six vision points:

    * Development of cultural and leisure facilities/activities
    * Development of concepts for and the localisation of premises for retail trade and other commerce
    * Preparation of plans for traffic and infrastructure, and models for parking
    * Urban development, urban renewal and urban lifestyle
    * Collaboration and dialogue with stakeholders and citizens
    * Sustainability - from the perspectives of the environment, health/social welfare, and finance.

The participating teams are also expected to have in-depth insight into the financial aspects of major urban development projects.

Køge Kyst expects to pre-qualify 5-7 teams. This number is then likely to be reduced to three teams following an introductory competition round. The three teams selected will then continue with the second phase of the parallel competition. For their work, the teams will receive a fee of EUR 20,000 each for Phase 1, and EUR 80,000 each for Phase 2. In addition, a sum of up to EUR 100,000 will be available to the adjudication committee to reward entire approaches and/or individual elements.

For information about pre-qualification requirements, the form of the competition and the timetable, visit http://www.koegekyst.dk

Applications with documentation material are to have been received by Køge Kyst no later than 12 noon on 9 December 2009.

The material is to be sent in hard copy format (6 copies) and electronically to:

For years, Northern Virginia’s Four Mile Run has functioned as a flood control channel and a border between the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. More recently, growing community interest in revitalizing and celebrating the Run has resulted in the Four Mile Run Restoration Master Plan. The plan outlines a broad range of ambitious, feasible goals to restore the ecology of the Run while re-establishing it as a cherished park space and a means of stitching together communities.

Bridges are built to connect, traverse, and inspire. The pedestrian and cyclist bridges planned to reach across the run will be the defining elements in bringing people to the shores of the stream and to each other. As pieces of transit infrastructure, the bridges will also link neighborhoods, streets, and pathways, thus providing a more accessible and desirable means to walk or bike across the region. The first of these bridges is to establish the design language for the others to follow, and is the subject of this professional competition. Taking inspiration from its surrounding natural and industrial elements, the bridge is to be a modern, sustainable, and sculptural piece, spanning clear across the run with minimal impact to the streambed.

The competition to design and build this bridge begins with a request for qualifications and culminates in a public presentation given by three finalists. A winning team will be chosen based on the strength of their professional skills and the potential for their conceptual design to become an icon for the Four Mile Run and its surrounding community.

Please visit http://www.4milerun.org/ for more competition details. The deadline to submit qualifications is 4:00 pm (EST) December 7, 2009.
