Crisis as Calling........Design Competition
Crisis as Calling is an international design competition open to the public that invites participates to reconsider, and respond to the universal condition of Crisis. Crisis as an event implies a breakdown, and the collective response is typified by the attempt to return to "normal." We see this as more than an opportunity for responsive design; we see this as a calling for an expanded role for the design community, and we seek to explore uncharted courses to reveal innovative models for relevant engagement.

Call for Entries
Communicate a proposal that re-contextualizes the space for design to address the definition of crisis. The details of crisis typology and the boundaries for intervention are open, and should be clearly defined by each unique proposal. As crisis is a universal phenomenon with no bias or preferential destination, there are no restrictions to the type of project one may submit (specific location, program, or range).

For instance submissions might, challenge urban activism in times of trauma, the nature of informal building practices as emergency response, resource allocation as recovery stimulation, or community dynamics that enable awareness at larger scales. What should be clear in each proposal is how a particular challenge that is common to a clearly defined crisis set can be addressed as a materialized solution to a global predicament.

The 2013 Otto Linne Award for Urban Landscape Architecture gives students and young graduates of landscape architecture programmes the opportunity to address current themes and challenges within their profession. The award, which is held in honour of Hamburg’s first garden director Otto Linne (1869 – 1937), promotes the professional development of young designers and planners, and honours outstanding artistic achievement.

The issue “Hamburg Horn - By Far: Green!” with which the 2013 Otto Linne Award deals is a highly topical and controversial topic. The points of departure are the growth of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg, the enormous demand for housing within the city, and the political objective of building 6,000 new homes annually. In a city-state that has a limited amount of open space, this objective is undeniably associated with the densification of existing neighbourhoods. With this in mind, neighbourhoods built during the 1950s and 1960s have become a particular focus of attention, as they have a great potential for such increased density.

	SOCIALIGHT

(Source: Alexandre Guilbeault, M.Arch. CLU Foundation Board Member)

The 2013 edition of the CLU Foundation’s competition brings the participants to reflect on the role of lighting in the urban areas of tomorrow. Whether it be a citizen, an end-user or a resident, how can lighting create a sociality between these individuals and meet their different needs.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE THEME

« To an era of strictly functional public lighting followed a period where using lighting as tools of heritage beautification developed rapidly. Wouldn’t it now be time to think of the users and to invent what we could call a social light, meaning a light and ambiance responsive to the needs, the experiences and emotions of the users and citizens? » - Roger Narboni : Ambiances et atmosphère en lumière urbaine

The 2013 edition of the CLU Foundation’s competition invites participants to consider the role of lighting in the urban areas of tomorrow. Think of the future. Imagine urban neighborhoods where there are, for example, no cars, that the territory belongs to the people and that we put value in community, natural, recreational and social environments. Whether it be a citizen, resident or end-user, how can lighting be conceived around this individual with needs, emotions and desires. Professionals in landscape architecture, architecture or urban planning recognize that neighborhoods need to reinvent themselves. We must put aside our paradigms and open ourselves to new ideas.

Functional needs of urban lighting, such as security, traffic and signaling, have been met with rational responses by designers. But if we look at lighting solutions from a completely different angle, bringing light to a person could generate a feeling of well-being, a sense of belonging to a place or be a way to create a strong identity. In this context, should we review the traditional luminous object that can be found everywhere? How will this physically change the light source?

Without falling into the clichés of Utopia,

How will the many technological innovations in light help us improve the urban experience?

How will they shape the life of the city in various public spaces, parks, and other areas that make up a neighborhood?

How will the different modes of transport influence the way we illuminate the city?

Will we use street lighting as tools that will improve and favor the well-being of the user, as tools of communication or as tools to create different moods?

It is clear that with the transformation of urban centers, we will need to propose new solutions to adjust to the new urban realities. These are questions that challenge the members of the CLU Foundation. Now it is up to you, lighting entusiasts, to reflect and propose your vision of the role of urban lighting for tomorrow.

The Connected City Design Challenge will build awareness of urban design solutions capable of shaping Dallas forward, develop a more refined and specific strategy for connecting our downtown and river, and assist in securing future public and private investment. By empowering both designers and citizens, The Challenge will work to realize integrated solutions that improve the livability and viability of our city.

In order to secure the most capable design talent and facilitate a variety of solutions, The Connected City Design Challenge will be structured as a competitive process consisting of two idea streams: a professional stream and an open stream. From the Professional Stream, the jury will select three design teams through a competitive request for qualifications process. The selected design teams will be awarded $50,000 to bring their expertise and ideas to the challenge and up to $10,000 covering travel to Dallas. The Open Stream invites professionals, non-professionals, and students to submit design proposals. By a combination of popular vote and jury selection, four finalists will receive $5,000 each and participate in the public exhibit and activities. Public events will include a symposium and lecture series by all three professional teams and panel discussions including the open stream finalists.

After a very successful first edition of the participatory book ‘What is the future of architecture?’ we are very happy to announce our decision to do it again and present - ‘The future of architecture II’!

The future of architecture is a participatory book project, self-initiated by Crap is Good. The book consists of and depends on participation and collaboration. It is entirely independent from funds, sponsoring or organisational support and therefore relies completely on its concept and your support.

With the same motivation as last year, we are in search of all possible takes on the question ‘What is the future of architecture?’

Going through the answers we’ve gotten last year, we can say there are some recurring assumptions, a red line weaving its way through the book. The book, consisting of 52 very different takes on the same question - ‘What is the future of architecture?’ - takes us from fiction stories to a philosophical email discussion, through series of images and photography, to science-fiction and poetry. While leafing through, often a blurry image would come to mind, an imaginative glimpse of the future.

In this years edition we are very happy to include the answers of Ethel Baraona, Santiago Cirugeda, ETC, and many more to be announced.

Have a look on our website for more information and send in your answer before the 1st of september, 2013.

What are the Architect of the Year Awards?

BD’s annual celebration of architecture is unique in recognising a body of work across different sectors, judged by a panel of industry experts.

Returning for its 10th year, the Architect of the Year Awards reward the practices responsible for the best overall body of work in 11 different sectors, as well specialist awards including: Young Architect of the Year, Schueco Gold Award and then IE School ‘Class of’ scholarship. Organised by BD, the AYAs are distinguished from other architectural awards by virtue of honouring overall achievement within a particular sector. This provides a truly meaningful premise on which to compare the work of different architects.

It was the morning of Wednesday, April 18, 1906 and the city of San Francisco was shaken awake by an earthquake measuring 8.25 on the Richter scale. More than 30 fires were reported throughout the city as a result of gas leaks caused by the earthquake. San Francisco began to burn, and would continue to do so for four days and four nights.
The water network had also been seriously damaged by the quake, preventing firefighters from controlling the fire by the usual means. Yet this did not prevent them in their attempt to save the city, and they resorted to using all the tools at their disposal. They dynamited entire blocks in hopes of creating a firewall, fought the flames with hoses where the supply hadn’t been cut and installed water pumps to use water from the bay to control fires closer to the coast.
The American people will not forget the courage of all those men who faced what even today, after 100 years is remembered as the worst natural disaster in U.S. history.

ARCHmedium proposes the creation of this fire station for the city of San Francisco that serves not only to centralize and improve the service but also as a gift and token of appreciation from the city to this department.
The new center should not only be a practical space designed to respond to the needs of firefighters, but must become an icon of the city which rose from the ashes and a reminder of the tragedy, a building that not only the people of San Francisco but the entire world associates with the image of the fire department.

	Goal
Samsung Everland, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, is inviting students in architecture, landscape architecture, and urban design programs around the world to participate in our design competition. We are looking for creative ideas and innovative design approaches that will lead us to the new possibilities of urban typologies.

Design Challenge:
Most urban spaces are created with clear intentions. Yet, some are not. They are the results of the indifferences in planning, design, and urban economy. These spaces are neither purposed nor defined. We can find these types of spaces in every corner of any city. In most cases, these spaces are neglected. Now, we would like you to find these types of spaces that are under utilized, and interpret them in a new way to bring out its full potentials.
The subject of the proposal, "reinterpreting urban space" lies in providing citizens a new perspective toward urban spaces by redefining the relationship between these indeterminate spaces and the city by re-invigorating them with new possibilities.
Introduction

Homemade Dessert is excited to invite you once more to participate in our architectural photography competitions. This time we would like you to think about COLOR in architecture.

Color has a tremendous influence on human emotions. As Picasso once said, colors, like features, follow the changes of emotions. Although, and while perception of color is somewhat subjective, there are some color effects that have a universal influence on people. These scientific principles of color are known as chromotherapy and have been used as a form of alternative medicine since Egyptian civilization.

Whether it is used as a conceptual trigger of a project or introduced in the middle of a process to reconfigure the perception of some material or space, the truth is that color has its particular psychological function, either perceptive or systematic.

We are expecting to receive images of spaces where we can observe and feel this dual ability of colors, in both rational and emotional outcomes.

This is an international architectural photography competition and it is open for all.

Submission requirements:

Natural systems offer architects and designers signficant potential as alternative, ecologically performative architectonic strategies. The d3 Natural Systems competition invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore the potential of analyzing, documenting, and deploying nature-based influences in architecture, urbanism, interiors, and designed objects. Established in 2009, the annual d3 Natural Systems competition is an emerging voice in alternative architecture and one of the most notable awards in speculative, performance-based design. It recognizes exemplary ideas that redefine architecture as an ecological project through the implementation of advanced programs, technologies, materials, and social interventions that engage adaptability, globalization, and emergence.

The 2013 competition calls for innovative proposals that advance sustainable thought and performance through the study of intrinsic environmental geometries, behaviors, and flows. By identifying, examining, and applying their structural order on form and function- -bottom-up, performance-based solutions for limitless building typologies, functional programs, and material conditions may be realized.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself. Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Natural Systems competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with buildings. Design submissions must be environmentally responsible while advancing inventive conceptual solutions. Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable global future.

The d3 Natural Systems competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner--from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of interior detail. Accordingly, there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.
SKIN is a two-stage international design competition established to foster the deeper developments within the field of computational fabrication. We are soliciting design proposals that further existing research, by enabling prototyping at a larger scale or full scale, and proposals to jumpstart new research and design concepts into a first prototype. Choice of project location, contextual constraints, programmatic and functional requirements are open and should be freely interpreted to further the proposal’s thesis.

BRIEF
The building envelope and the transition between what is outside and what is inside presents the most complex and fundamentally linguistic element of architecture today. The form and performative capacity of what we might call the activated envelope is foundational and presents a dialogue the building has with itself and that of its context. A building’s skin has the potential to synchronize form and illustrates the totality of the project, while driving how the building responds to its context, its role and ultimately its utility. Fundamental to this is an explicit or implicit adaptability found in its performance – how it functions and meets the needs of the building. In the preceding 100 years since the beginning of the 21st century the transformation from a static, heavy and obfuscating series of load bearing walls, to its current role of a communicative skin, dynamical and exploratory, sets the stage for what we believe is the most important area of research in archi
tecture. SKIN, as a digital fabrication competition, asks architects, designers and researchers to speculate, or if they so choose present existing research, on its role – by exploring new methods to enable the performative qualities of a façade.

Design submissions may develop any context they choose, real or virtual, at any scale and on any building type so to present a complete thesis. Integrating structure, dynamical cladding or other system whether static and active may be submitted. We encourage the boldest visions and challenging technologies in the development of your proposal. The competition will select four of the most robust and intriguing projects, that best rethink the envelope, supporting those selections through prototypes developed to illustrate the potential of the competition submission.

	Topic: Architecture in Transformation
Sub-Topic: The Disappearance of Architectures

Purpose of the Competition:

Architecture must disappear.
Behind the radicalism of this statement lies something crucial for the future of architecture. Architecture as a discipline should no longer think in terms of objects. Walls, facades, structures, are only modalities of architecture, but never its finality. Design comes after. After what? After situations. Architects deal with situations.

Architecture should be conceived as an integral part of the landscape. Glass, concrete or metal would in this case no longer be the elements that build architecture, but the territory, as it exists, as we relate to it.

One of the commitments of an architect is to overwhelm the observable escalation in the production of contemporary architecture by introducing new situations, dialectic situations and experiences, between inside and outside, free and available spaces in-between what is public and what is private.

Sometimes, we make architecture disappear. We make it melt within the territory, blurring the lines between architecture and landscape, between physicality and immateriality, between presence and absence.

Requirements of the Competition：

Participants can draw up the project proposal themselves and there is no limitation on architectural types. Designers of the project should take into account the features of contemporary urban architecture and pay attention to specific space needs of different user groups.

Participants can choose sites themselves. The site should be challenging and with distinct urban characteristics.

Total floor area is around 4,000㎡. It may be increased or decreased up to around 10% according to the designer.

Language and Measurement Unit: English is the official language of the competition. (Note: The title, school name, name of participants, and introduction of major design must be described in English at least); the unit of measurement is metric scale.

A unique design awards program, the 2013 George Matsumoto Prize recognizes excellence in recent single-family Modernist residential design in North Carolina by architects or designers both in and outside the state. Submissions are being accepted starting today.

Now in its second year, the Prize is named for George Matsumoto, FAIA, a founding member of the NC State University School of Design faculty who is well known for the mid-century Modernist houses he designed in North Carolina.

Unlike other design award programs, the Prize offers monetary rewards ($6000 total), online public voting along with a blue-ribbon professional jury, and this program focuses on the houses submitted rather than those who designed them: The houses, built since January 1, 2007, must be in North Carolina but the designers can be from anywhere and they do not have to be licensed architects or members of the American Institute of Architects.

The Matsumoto Prize is also transparent. All information submitted, including the designer’s name, will be published online and available to the jurors and the public. The public vote counts for one-sixth of the jury decision for the final award winners. The houses with the highest number of public votes will also receive special “People’s Choice” recognition. Public voting will begin on www.trianglemodernisthouses.com in early July and end July 20th.

Again this year, George Matsumoto will serve as the jury’s Honorary Chair. Also returning to the jury are: Frank Harmon, FAIA, (Chair) of Frank Harmon Architect PA, Raleigh; Marlon Blackwell, FAIA, of Marlon Blackwell Architect, Fayetteville, Arkansas; Tom Kundig, FAIA, of Olson Kundig Architects, Seattle, Washington; and Larry Scarpa, FAIA, of Brooks + Scarpa Architects, Los Angeles, California.

Triangle Modernist Houses is an award-winning, non-profit organization dedicated to documenting, preserving, and promoting Modernist residential design. According to George Smart, the objectives for the Matsumoto Prize are “to expand the public’s awareness about the great inventory of North Carolina Modernist houses, to showcase the skills of the North Carolina residential design community, and to inform the public that great design can be well within a homebuyer’s reach.”

Competition rules, submission procedures, and deadlines are available online at www.trianglemodernisthouses.com/prize2013.

	The Challenge
After Super-storm Sandy, thousands of homeowners in Long Island and the Tri-State area face a critical point in determining their future. The competition seeks creative and innovative designs for comprehensive coastal communities along Long Island, New Jersey, NYC and Southern New England. Existing homes must now comply with new FEMA regulations. Homes that are deemed 50% or more damaged must be either demolished and reconstructed, or raised above the Base Flood Elevation (BFE). These codes ensure life safety to citizens living in flood plains, however nobody has considered the implications that these new codes present to the overall aesthetics of the community. ORLI asks these questions: What will happen to an entire community once some homes are raised and some remain on the ground? Can a comparable community be envisioned or will the unique aesthetic these communities have be lost forever?

By focusing the competition at the regional scale, we can impact local municipalities along the vulnerable Atlantic Coast. The Comprehensive Coastal Communities competition envisions new towns where proper planning and implementation will render these places resilient for generations to come. The students feel that by focusing on community planning they can make an impact on local town codes. The competition will ask competitors to select a specific community and design a housing typology and incorporate it into a neighborhood block plan. The streetscape including landscape, façade cohesion and zoning are all considerations for neighborhood block proposals.

The jury for the Comprehensive Coastal Communities competition is forthcoming and will be available in the coming weeks but will be comprised of a team of professionals in various fields, including sustainability, build-ability, and resilient design.

Registration
There is no fee to enter. Registration deadline is June 30, 2013. Submissions are due July 25, 2013. Upon the announcement of winners and honorable mentions, ORLI plans to create a publication of all work to be then distributed to local municipalities throughout the region. A symposium is also planned which will showcase the winners along with 20-30 honorable mentions and will discuss the future implications of storms and overall climate change. The symposium will be organized by ORLI and collaborators and will be held at NYIT’s Auditorium on Broadway in New York City on October 10, 2013.

Comprehensive Coastal Communities is supported by the American Institute of Architecture Students NYIT Chapters and Waves for Water. ORLI has also established a student advisory group of students from around the country to participate in the planning and outreach process.
COMPETITION OF COMPETITIONS
Redefining Briefs, Clients and Agents.
by Storefront for Art and Architecture for the AAAI!

Throughout history, competitions have constructed a relationship of servitude between architects and the structures of economic, politic and cultural power.

The competition brief has served as the initial document for the manifestation of desires either through programmatic, economic or formal needs. Often, the role of the architect has been reduced to answer a question that someone else has asked. In exceptional occasions, the architect’s ability to reinvent and produce new desires has occurred in the form of rebellion against the brief. In an act of bravura, architects have broken the rules, driven by the pure belief that the real needs were contained outside of the given principles.

Given competitions operate in a confined space for experimentation, they have perpetuated and sometimes repeated ad nauseam a series of programmatic and social needs – from Museums to Concert Halls - without actually asking what needs of society architecture should aspire to serve.

This competition claims that the true desires of our present society are outside of the current taxonomy of competition briefs and that architects should be participants in the construction of the questions they are asked to answer.

If a competition is the articulation of society’s desires in space, what new desires should we consider? What are the questions of our time that we should be asking to architects, urban planners and policy makers to redefine the way in which we build our cities and territories? What underrepresented spaces, individuals or collectives need to be explored? And, what are the agents, authorities or organizations from which the competitions should be promoted?

The intention of “The Competition of Competitions” is to provide and deliver new and relevant forms of engagement and content to the economic, politic and social systems that currently act as the voice of authority for the development of our cities. “Competition of Competitions” asks architects, artists, economists, philosophers, writers, and citizens at large to create interdisciplinary teams to formulate the questions of our time and define the agents that should pursue the task to ask and commission the visions for the future in the form of a competition brief.

We encourage participants to rethink the format, content and agent/s that constitute the basis for the way competitions and commissions are organized.
rdAGENTS, Rice Design Alliance’s young professionals group, will host its third annual Anything That Floats competition on Saturday, June 22 at Sesquicentennial Park. The event challenges participants to build a device that can float a short distance along Buffalo Bayou using discarded building materials. This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, but was cancelled due to a water release from Addicks Dam into Buffalo Bayou. The rise in water and strong current would have been too dangerous for the participants to race across the bayou. The previously scheduled date coincided with the Kentucky Derby and we will continue with the horse‐racing theme! We encourage viewers to wear their best derby gear and participants to wear a jockey costume for extra points.

Participants only will be allowed to start building on the day of the competition and will be judged based on creativity, innovation, and speed, among other spontaneous criteria that emerge from the event. KHOU‐TV news reporter Katherine Whaley of KHOU and Doug Combes from Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing will judge the event. The public is encouraged to attend.

The fall issue of MAS Context will focus on the topic of TRACE.

We will be exploring physical remnants and selective memories, tangible and intangible reminders of a past that influence our present and future. At the same time, we will be discussing the traces that we continue to leave, both physical and digitally, and how those will affect us in the future.

What are the consequences and opportunities that can emerge from the new traces we create? Who benefits from the generation of new traces? Which traces should we embrace and which ones should we dismiss or even fight against? Is ignoring all traces the only way to truly move forward and foster radical changes?

For this issue we are soliciting submissions that explore, question, and critically address the role of traces in our built environment. Submissions can be in the form of critical essays, photo essays, analytical studies, data visualizations, visual explorations, interviews or films.

For more information about the submission process, visit our submission guidelines.

Please, send your submission to submission@mascontext.com by Monday, June 17.

Deep and controversial economical transformations have been hitting Europe. On one side they show a highly destructive potential; on the other side they are the key to undiscovered scenarios once unimaginable. Beneath the remains of ancient systems often lays the opportunity to write new cultures.

Shipbuilding industry has been hardly struck by crisis: while great arsenals are in distress, medium and small ones ceased to work time ago. Therefore plenty harbor areas are now in search of a new vocation since they have a strategic role for the urban, economic and landscape value of the city.

Which future to imagine for such areas? This is the challenge YAC proposes designers. YAC invites to redesign an old dismissed harbor area in a play-area that can take advantage of the particular situation between the sea and the city. The aim is to offer tourists and citizens a modern and appealing wellness and entertainment centre.

Whatever the meaning challengers will associate to a wellness / entertainment vocation (skatepark, movie theatre,…), YAC invites to work in a temporal and personal perspective.

YAC aims to promote a field of research focusing on such contemporary living axioms: in synthesis it shall be smart. Modern technologies can provide users quick information and discretional points of view like never before. In this sense Architecture must point the same direction by giving its users the the faculty to live space in changeable ways - depending on what they prefer.

Starting lines for reflections can be the themes of dynamic or modular spaces, as well as interactive park areas.
Crowd-sourcing a new map for the Buckminster Fuller Institute

70 years ago Life magazine published Buckminster Fuller’s Dymaxion Map. With an undistorted projection of the Earth’s surface, ability to be easily reconfigured and transform from a 2-D map to a 3-D globe, the Dymaxion Map (patented in 1946) was a cartographic breakthrough and its iconic design has inspired generations since.

In celebration of the map's publication anniversary, the Buckminster Fuller Institute (BFI) is calling on today’s graphic designers, visual artists, and citizen cartographers to create a new and inspiring interpretation of the Dymaxion Map. BFI will publish accepted entries within an online gallery, feature the selected finalists in a gallery exhibition in New York City and select one winning entry to be produced as a 36" x 24" poster and offered for sale within our online store. *

FAR ROC [For a Resilient Rockaway] is a two-phase design competition that will explore innovative strategies for the planning, design and construction of a resilient and sustainable development at Arverne East, an 80+ acre site on the Rockaway Peninsula.

In recent years, the relationship between the built and the natural environment has been dramatically affected by climate change, severe storm events, and rising sea levels. The extensive damage to low-lying waterfront zones caused by Hurricane Sandy in October 2012 reinforced the need for resilient infrastructure and redevelopment strategies for existing coastal communities throughout the greater New York area. Costly damage to buildings, roads, and utility systems by the storm raises the controversial question of whether areas of particular geographic vulnerability should be rebuilt, maintained and defended, or simply abandoned.

With these and other questions in mind, and given the scarcity of land and the significant need for housing and economic development in outlying areas of New York City, the FAR ROC design competition has been organized to solicit creative ideas for resilient development strategies that can be implemented not only in the Rockaways but also throughout New York City and in vulnerable communities everywhere. Following a first-phase open call for design proposals, up to four finalists will be selected by an independent jury and provided a stipend of $30,000 to further refine their design strategies.

The winner of the competition will be announced in advance of the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy on October 24th, 2013, and will receive an additional cash prize of $30,000.

Van Alen Institute is pleased to announce the launch of Ground/Work, an international architecture competition seeking innovative designs for a new street-level venue to house the Institute’s work space and public programs. Since 1982, the Institute has occupied the sixth floor of its building at 30 West 22nd Street in Manhattan, where a diverse program of competitions, curatorial initiatives, and public events has made Van Alen an influential center for design innovation. This year, the Institute is making its public-oriented mission central to the reinvention of its own office and event space, transforming the ground floor and lower level of its building to house its entire organization.

Ground/Work invites emerging designers, up to ten years out of school, to propose bold visions for a light and highly flexible ground-floor space that is visible, accessible, and participatory in public life, with a strong connection to the street and the city at large. The Call for Portfolios runs from May 15 through June 13, 2013. Up to three finalists will be selected to compete in the second phase of the competition. The winning team will have four months to complete design work for construction in winter 2013.

	COMPETITION: Triumph Architectural SketchBook Award
TOPIC: Bus Shelter, Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA

INTRODUCTION:
This International ideas Architectural Free-Hand Sketch Awards competition is organised by ArchTriumph and calls on Architects, Architecture Graduates, Architecture Students, Designers, Landscape Architects, Engineers, City Planner or Urbanist to enter a sketch and a design idea or concept for an original modular bus shelter to be located along the bus route running from Avenue Leandro .N. Alem within Retiro district to Avenue Paseo Colon within San Telmo district in Buenos Aires City, Argentina.

AIM:
The aim of this award is not only to recognise the role of sketch in the architectural design process in shaping ideas, addressing a problem and engaging collaborators but also recognising the contribution of sketching to any design discussion or collaboration.

This competition investigates, explores and emphasises the importance and function of sketching or drawing as visual thinking in design and how it supports design reasoning. Sketches are viewed as central to architectural design and serve as reference to be used, transformed, or engaged in a later composition. Visual representations such as freehand sketches and concept diagrams seem to play a significant role in design problem solving process.

Design, like all problem solving activities, involves reasoning, making decisions, expressing ideas, verifying and evaluating design proposals and then taking action. Drawing is a vehicle for design reasoning, and therefore the spontaneous marks made on paper during sketching form a partial record of the designer's thinking.

Most designers sketch early design ideas with a pencil on paper with sketching still the quickest and most direct means to produce visual representations of ideas. The ambiguity of free hand sketching allows multiple interpretations and thus stimulates the discovery and production of more design alternatives or configurations

THE CHALLAENGE:
The design challenge is to come up with a design for a modular Bus Shelter to be located along the bus route running from Avenue Leandro .N. Alem within Retiro district to Avenue Paseo Colon within San Telmo district in Buenos Aires City, Argentina. The goal is to provide an architectural solution that is functional, feasible, repeatable, elegant and reflecting the cultural context to replace the existing bus shelter.

The Bus Shelter design should reflect the city and responds to its unique location, the city's characteristics and cultural environment. It must also provide a shelter space for up to 15 persons (with standing and seating distribution open to participants) to wait for the bus. The bus shelter must protect users from the elements such rain, sun while providing circulation, seating and consideration for security. The bus shelter design must include a signage element for orientation and advertisement.

We are surrounded by lights, regardless of whether it is day or night. And probably the most familiar and classic image of a light is the traditional light bulb.

When the incandescent light bulb was invented it was made out of necessity for its functionality and strength as opposed to its design, but the shape of the beautiful spherical bulb continues to be used today in household lighting even though the incandescent light bulb is seldom used anymore. Now, with the growing popularity of LED lights, there is no reason why we cannot be a little more creative with the shapes of our light bulbs and free a bulb from its conventional form.

This contest calls for free-style creative designs for lights that can be enjoyed either on or off. Winning designs will be brought to life using a 3D printer and made into a cover for an LED light. We’ll have specialists to create the 3D data, so even if you are completely new to this, you can still enter! Even simple rough sketches can be transformed into real-life three-dimensional objects using the 3D printer. Think of your own new LED light design and the various life scenes where lights are used, and submit your entry in the contest.

AIAVT : Emerging Professionals Competition 2013

ELIGIBILITY:
This competition is open to all emerging design professionals and architects within 5 years of registration, living or working in New England. Entrants may work individually or as part of a team.

AWARDS:
1st Place : $1000 / 2nd Place : $500 / 3rd Place : $250 (AIAVT Sponsored)
The Top 20 entries will be recognized and displayed as part of a traveling exhibition around New England.

BRIEF:
In the past few decades the local food movement has grown significantly; however, local food still only constitutes less than 10% of the total food system in the United States. While farmers’ markets, locavore restaurants, and home vegetable gardens continue to grow in number, there remains a real need for systemic tools to inform the public, promote local food businesses, and facilitate local food distribution.

Entrants are asked to design a practical and symbolic center for the local food system in a New England community. The Farm to Fork Stand should actively engage with the existing local food system, promoting local products, farms, restaurants, and seasonal foods through information display, workshops, distribution, events, etc.

The University of Virginia School of Architecture would like to extend the invitation to submit visions for the future of water to be considered for inclusion in the upcoming book entitled WATER INDEX. This book will catalogue the world’s most promising and provocative visions for the future of water and humanity. This is an open call for projects and papers that acknowledge and challenge the pressing water issues confronting the 21st Century. Submissions can vary in scale and discipline. Submissions can be at the scale of a cup or a dam, a fountain or a city. WATER INDEX is a search for intelligence about how to create a sustainable, productive relationship between water and people.

The WATER INDEX will be structured as an index that positions emerging terms, mechanisms, and strategies within a framework of three pressing water topics: The Rising, The Contaminated, and The Disappearing. These three conditions of water present fundamental complications for humanity’s dependence on water and will become thresholds within the index. Flowing between these three thresholds is a gradient of terms and topics from which the selected submissions will be indexed.

Terms for Speculation
Submissions may specifically align to one of the identified terms below or suggest other water terminologies or topics to be included in the WATER INDEX.

Rising, Antarctic Ice Sheet, Arctic, cataclysmic cycles, Catastrophism, coastline, control, creation, currents, drowned, dynamics, erosion patterns, expansion, flood, flood channels, flood mark, glacier, ice, Kona storm, landslides, liquefaction, living material, measurement, melting, monsoon belts, new territory, Northwest Passage, rate, retreat, saltwater intrusion, sea level, sea surface temperatures, sheet flooding, snowmelt, storm surge, super storm, SuperDam, Tibetan glaciers, transformation, turbulence, underwater, water-laden, Contaminated, waterborne, water mafia, water cartel, urbanization, toxic, salinity, recharge, putrid coast, public health, popcorn shrimp, petrochemical, paving, nonlinear localized water infrastructure, living ecology, hydrological dystopias, Gulf of Mexico, fertilizer, diarrhea, decentralization, cracks and fissures, cholera, black mayonnaise, Amphibian Apocalypse, agricultural runoff, Disappearing, aquifer, artesian basins, biofuel plantations, depletion, desalination, dissipative structures, double cropping, drying out, ephemeral, hot stain, hydraulic decoration, irrigation, lawns, leaky infrastructure, Manifest Destiny, megadrought, over consumption, Owens Lake, pools, sinkholes, species, subterranean water, suicide, sweat, urban heat islands, water mining, wetlands.

About the Publication
WATER INDEX looks to employ the dystopian threats surrounding water as a provocation. The 21st Century is facing an elevating crisis with water. The seas are rising, the deserts are expanding, and the cities are growing at alarming rates. We must construct new mechanisms for subsistence. In a state of expanding fragility between water, economy, ecology, politics, and culture, the question is the format for deliverance. Is it sufficient to build life support systems that offer momentary alleviation? Is it possible to reframe the problems in order to formulate new solutions? The WATER INDEX will provide a catalog for the future of water and humanity. The book is a resultant of a yearlong focus on water at the University of Virginia School of Architecture. The content will include selected submissions from students, faculty and professionals from around the world.

WATER INDEX’s relevance is ever growing as our complications with water continue to become more and more severe and frequent. In the last year, the news has been dominated by tragic water related catastrophes: Hurricane Sandy drastically disrupted the northeastern United States taking over 150 lives and causing over 50 billion dollars in damage, Hurricane Isaac hit the Gulf Coast exactly 7 years after Hurricane Katrina, the summer of 2012 brought the worse drought to the United States in a quarter of a century, the Mississippi River shrank to its lowest levels in a quarter of a century, flooding has brought chaos to the Philippines, and scientists at the US National Snow and Ice Data Center reported in August that the amount of ice covering the sea surface has shrunk to its lowest recorded level. Population growth and climate change are drastically effecting how we interact with water. Water feeds life, but so often it also takes life.

Final Submission Deadline: 11:59pm EDT on May 31st.

Submission Instructions
All submissions are to be uploaded from the book’s website: www.waterindex.info . Entries may be submitted by individual authors or as a group or team. There is no limit to number of entries allowed, but all entries must be submitted independently with proper identification. We will be accepting both projects and papers for consideration in the book.

Project Submission Requirements
Refer to waterindex.info for submission requirements and formats.

Selection Process
Submission does not guarantee inclusion in the publication. Selection for the publication will be a highly competitive process. Projects will be evaluated based on significance, relevance and originality. Selected authors will be notified in early July 2013.
