2013 Fentress Global Challenge: Upcycled Architecture

Fentress Global Challenge is an international competition created to stimulate students worldwide in the exploration of future design possibilities in public architecture. In its third annual competition, students are invited to envision Fentress Architects’ concept of Upcycled Architecture, defined as the art of redesigning an existing structure for purposes other than those for which it was originally intended. Upcycled Architecture additionally advances an existing building’s sustainable, dynamic, and programmatic uses.

“We want participants to use their imaginations and submit visionary proposals with inspiring ideas that could play an important role in the redevelopment of not only the chosen site, but the greater community.” - Curtis Fentress, FAIA, RIBA, Chairman and Principal-in-Charge of Design at Fentress Architects.

All students presently enrolled in an accredited college level Architectural or Interiors program are invited to participate. Register online at www.fentressarchitects.com by Thursday, December 19, 2013; registration is free. You will automatically be emailed a registration number to use for your final submission.

Awards
1st Place - US$10,000 prize and a certificate of merit (US$10,000 prize includes US$3,000 cash, 4-week paid internship at Fentress Architects, coach round-trip airfare, and lodging at a location of Fentress’ discretion for the duration of the paid internship).
2nd Place - US$1,000 cash prize and a certificate of merit.
3rd Place - US$500 cash prize and a certificate of merit.

Internship at Fentress Architects             Summer 2014

Seeking proposals that include the following:

  1. Must be an existing site already occupied by a built structure
  2. Must be in urban context; reducing sprawl and focusing development and efficiencies in the urban environment
  3. Must be a public building that adds urban vitality, and brings relevance and meaning to the community and people
  4. No restrictions on the type of site or size. Examples include, but are by no means limited to, disused factories, power plant, schools, apartment blocks, etc.
  5. Must show physical location/address and image(s) of current structure
  6. Building must be 10 years or older
  7. Take into consideration the advances in technology, the exploration of sustainable systems, and the alignment between proposed new use and characteristics of the existing building
  8. Demonstrates original architecture and design concepts
  9. Includes an innovative vision for the site
  10. Responds to the site’s context
