2A International Architectural Students and Young Architects Competition: Du(b)ailities: Supra_globa

Registration Deadline:  Tuesday, Sep 2, 20086:53 AMEDT

Submission Deadline:  Sunday, Jan 11, 20097:53 AMEDT

2A International Architectural Students and Young Architects Competition: Du(b)ailities: Supra_global_culture / micro_ethnic_localities

In response to the current architectural, urban and cultural developments in the Gulf, the 2A Architecture + Art magazine has decided to organize an Architectural Competition for young designers with the following goals:

1- Challenge the cultural engagement, support and develop the skills of students and young architects.
2- Flourish and generate new thoughts and ideas for the Gulf by regional and international schools of design.
3- Focus on the development of Dubai as the emerging metropolitan prototype of the 21st century and stimulate reflection around its development.
4- Revive debates in the field and link young architects across geographical boundaries.
5- Promote the work of talented young architects for projects in the Gulf and expose their ideas.

Dubai is a city that has become the center of discussion and discourse across the globe as the post 20th century city and urban model. The international architectural / urban competition, Du(b)ailities: Supra_global_culture / micro_ethnic_localities, aims at intensifying and enriching this exchange by inviting young architects and students of architecture from the UAE and across the world to participate and present visions, concepts and proposals for Dubai. By doing this, the city and its inhabitants will have the chance to participate and discuss ideas about their city and benefit from the presented proposals. The competition offers its participants two separate challenges: one for the larger city scale and the other for a smaller urban area. Solutions for both categories will create the basis of real proposals and possibilities for the city.
The Competition has two categories (A and B). Participants may choose to submit in either with multiple projects or in both categories.

The competition is organized as a single stage, open ideas competition for architectural students and architects under the age of 40 at international level.

Two categories are set for competitors to select:
Category A: Supra_global_culture – large-scale visions
Category B: Micro-ethnic-localities – small-scale interventions

CATEGORY A: Supra_global_culture
Introduction - The large city scale competition is responding to the emergence of Dubai as the prototypical metropolis and a global city of the 21st century. With an anticipated growth of 8% over the next six years, a population which will reach 2 million inhabitants and with 10 million tourists per year by 2010, Dubai’s unique growth calls for large-scale urban visions with specific urban, social and architectural attributes going beyond the ongoing delivery of projects.

CATEGORY B: Micro-ethnic-localities
Introduction - The small-scale urban insertion(s) category is tapping on the nature of Dubai as a space of intensified expatriate presence assembling a multitude of nationalities and ethnic groups. Various transient micro-ethnicities can bring to the city a wealth of memories, experiences and wisdom enriching Dubai’s urban life, as people’s stories are weaved into the collective memory and making of the city.
