Architectural students and professionals are invited to participate in an open design competition that is being held in conjunction with the upcoming symposium, A Living Presence:  Extending and Transforming the Tradition of Catholic Sacred Architecture. This Competition explores how the continuity of tradition ensures that truth resonates through the beauty that constitutes Catholicism’s unique architectural patrimony.  There is no detailed program or specific site for this competition.  However, projects submitted as competition entries must involve new Catholic sacred buildings or spaces (examples: a new church building or a complete chapel interior).  Submittals for both commissioned (i.e. “real”) buildings and un-commissioned (i.e. theoretical/academic) projects are welcome.  Please visit website for more details:  http://architecture.cua.edu/alivingpresence/designcompetition.cfm

This is an unusual competition. The main sponsors appear to be extreme conservatives of the Novus Modo sect that want to return Catholic Church design to Pre Vatican 2 Church Triumphant Renaissance Architecture.

Several problems: Can Renaissance Churches ever be modern? Can the cost of such complexes ever be justified in light of Christ's Command to help the poor? Classical Renaissance Buildings in today's dollars would be in the hundred's of millions of dollars and were built to glorify the State. Patrons like this don't exist in our modern world.
