rdAGENTS, Rice Design Alliance’s young professionals group, will host its third annual Anything That Floats competition on Saturday, June 22 at Sesquicentennial Park. The event challenges participants to build a device that can float a short distance along Buffalo Bayou using discarded building materials. This event was originally scheduled for Saturday, May 4th, but was cancelled due to a water release from Addicks Dam into Buffalo Bayou. The rise in water and strong current would have been too dangerous for the participants to race across the bayou. The previously scheduled date coincided with the Kentucky Derby and we will continue with the horse‐racing theme! We encourage viewers to wear their best derby gear and participants to wear a jockey costume for extra points.
Participants only will be allowed to start building on the day of the competition and will be judged based on creativity, innovation, and speed, among other spontaneous criteria that emerge from the event. KHOU‐TV news reporter Katherine Whaley of KHOU and Doug Combes from Chamberlin Roofing and Waterproofing will judge the event. The public is encouraged to attend.
