Call for Graphic Provocations!

Building projects continue to proliferate at a global scale in spite of the economic climate. Architectural concepts are being incorporated by a variety of discourses. Ever-expanding arrays of spatial practices are considered within the bounds of the discipline. Is architecture becoming ubiquitous?

Or think about the same circumstances a different way: Architects are constructing ephemeral environments, micro-scalar interventions and even invisible phenomena. Other fields are unremittingly appropriating architecture. The cleft between the discipline of architecture and its own professional practice is deepening. Is architecture evaporating?

Work Books seeks original responses by students to this paradoxical situation of disciplinary obsolescence and expansion. In a bold, creative and provocative visual format such as a diagram, map, cartoon, collage or illustration -- no essays, please!-- show us how you might navigate through these relationships in a manner that proposes new ways of thinking or acting architecture differently.

Selected submissions will be included in the forthcoming Work Books publication, Architecture is All Over, scheduled for release in 2012.


Submission Guidelines

1. Work Books invites only currently enrolled students to submit to this call

Why? Work Books is interested in what emerging practitioners and thinkers have to say because we feel they are underrepresented in the public conversation about architecture. We want to bring diverse insights and perspectives by students to a wider audience.

2. On format

Entries should be sized at 9-1/3” (h) x 13-1/2” (w), the dimensions of one page spread. Graphics should be in black and white with one unspecified spot color. A high-resolution version (300 dpi at final scale, unflattened) of your submission will be required if selected, so hang on to your original files!

3. Submissions should be sent by email as PDF or JPG attachments to [email protected]

Remember to indicate your name, contact information, program of study and educational institution in the email. Attachments should not exceed 10mb. Larger files should be sent using file sharing software such as Yousendit.com or Dropbox.com. You will receive a confirmation of receipt by email.


Editorial Guidelines

1. Plagiarism is a heinous crime

The provocation must be entirely original and specific to this call. Work Books will not accept school or studio assignments, or work completed for a firm. For legal reasons, we will not accept submissions that use appropriated, recognizable imagery or text created by persons other than the author.

2. Don’t make us wonder if we’ve heard this before

Submissions must be previously unpublished. Work Books will not accept entries that have been published in print, online, anywhere.

3. On the value of the new

While selected submissions will require a clear analysis of the dilemma at hand, we are looking for interesting formulations that move beyond illustrating the current situation. Take a critical position in relation to the given topic and propose an imaginative way to for us to move forward.
