Building Conflict: Islamic Center in Zürich, Switzerland
Register/Submit: Monday, March 01, 2010

In celebration of the launch of “Foreign Architects Switzerland,” a new publication, we are hosting an ideas competition for an Islamic Center in Zürich. Triggered by the recent ban on the construction of minarets in Switzerland, we search for entrees where Muslims can gather and practice their religion in an open, western context.
On a prominent site above the Limmat River, the presence of such a Mosque is impossible to camouflage. How can architecture, as a manifestation of social relationships, expedite conflicts in a city? Is Zuerich an undisturbed town, or a war-zone, a platform for ideas to be fought for? How can elements of a foreign culture be augmented, rather than diminished, through contextualism?

Bustler in general has a selection of good competitions by professional organisations which makes me come back to the page an look for new opportunities. In this case I feel that the organiser is not professional and there is no need to post this call for projects on bustler.
As a european citizen I feel offended by this image that is made of swiss people here. The swiss population has made a democratic decision that should be respected by people in swizerland and outside it. While the recent competition at archinect
to design a flexible minaret was more fun, this one
puts swizerland next to racism in many ways.
How about a memorial competition about the 100,000 civilan muslims that have died in the war in iraq that the americans fight for a long time now. Why not build muslim centres and mosques for washington, atlanta and san francisco ?
How about christian centres and churches in the arab world ? Think about it.

Kevin, as a European citizen, maybe you should feel offended that there is growing hysteria in many European countries over 'Muslim infiltration.' If you can sit back and accept Switzerland's vote, maybe you shouldn't complain when someone paints them as racist.

And what on earth does America have to do with any of this? The last I heard, Americans can build mosques and minarets.
And by the way, Pope Benedict is already building churches in Saudi Arabia.

Kevin, there is no ban on minaret in USA
Democracy that singles out one particular religion/culture/ gets in a big problem to call itself democracy, or at least to be an example to others. As an European citizen, you should not put your head into sand, look what is going on in Europe.
What the fuck did Swiss muslims in swiss wrong?
