Telluride Arts is pleased to invite architects, urban designers, students, engineers, designers, and artists from around the globe to take part in the 2014 Telluride Coonskin Base Competition, an open competition for generating ideas for the community of Telluride.
The objective of this hypothetical architectural design competition is to re-envision Telluride’s Coonskin Base site as a vibrant new community asset. Design proposals should respect and balance the “public use” considerations of the Town of Telluride with the operational and economic interests of the privately-held Telluride Ski Resort. The Coonskin Base area is arguably the most complex and most under-utilized site in Telluride. Given the dynamic complexities of the property, the current arrangement of buildings and uses is lackluster. Past discussions on new developmental strategies have always ended in a public/private stalemate and political entanglements.
Design proposals should creatively explore the symbiotic relationship between the Town of Telluride and the Telluride Ski Resort in an effort to break though the current stalemate. A well-balanced developmental strategy and architectural design solution should provide great advances for the public and private stakeholders and can engage a larger discussion of the surrounding areas in an effort to make Coonskin the impetus and its surrounding pieces emanating from this site. Your proposals should create a scenario for both long term and short term with as much vision and foresight as possible into the further development and exposure with surrounding communities.
