Custom Home Design Challenge, Bahamas

The objective of the architectural competition is the design of a 7,000-8,000 square foot multi-generational home on the waterfront in the Bahamas. The architectural ‘guideline’ for the home design should be one that stimulates and delights with its unique ideas, exotic details and classic emphasis, and harmonizes indoor and outdoor living spaces.

this couple is selflishly calling all international designers to address their luxury needs, instead of giving us the opportunity to address the needs of those who will benefit more from our design skills. i am disgusted to see people taking advantage of our profession and more so disgusted to see my peers devaluing themselves!

it is like me asking a doctor to give me a foot massage for 2 weeks, instead of letting him take care of thousands of patients who are in needs of his help.

Competitions, and their ability to gather a wide range of architectural views are, and will remain, one of the most effective means of finding a competant architect to execute a specific project. They have been in existance since time immemorial. Based on anonymity, it levels the 'playing field' between 'well known' and 'unknown' practicioners. It provides a level of equality between large firms and the 'small man' practicing in a basement; and it 'blurs' the line between 'local' and 'international'. It is clear that some of my colleagues find this highly threatening.

what a joke of a comp. more rich baby boomers looking for design on the cheap. steer clear of this one, your talents and time are better spent on a REAL comp!!! Bustler should filter this crap out.

if you really don't like the competition, you don't have to enter it .. probably better that we are given as many choices as possible, and then each person can decide if its right for them .. its not bustler's job to judge the worthiness of competitions for us

As Philip Johnson infamously declared "I am an (architectural) whore". It seems as though this attitude still earnestly resonates with a portion of the current architectural generation. Pathetic.

The U$12,000.00 prize is 1% of a 1.2 million house. I will not sit and develop a full project for 1% of the cost of the building and to take the risk of loosing it to a 3DMax visionary.

I am amazed at the level of competition! The first and thrid entries look like they were designed by children...... Children with $12,000 in their pockets. They should have named this the New Urbanist Bonanza.

yesterday the winner was miki onodera...today he is called seung park, but with the same design...i guess they had huge problems with organizing this competition and the results are ridiculous.

Just so you know, I think the words 'green' or 'eco' are seriously abused but what are these 'winners' telling us about the bahamas, the site, the HEAT?.
2nd place is a glossy presentation but is the design a 'winner'?? I am left speechless by 1 and 3 but images of Mickey Mouse come to mind. Surely there must be other inspiring entries with a little bit of an edge - that tell us something about 'now' and about design (they don't have to be glossy).
To lm in tokyo - it was a design competition but it seems that was forgotten somewhere along the line

1st place winner name changed again to be Troy-Moses Panton. They must have had serious problems coordinating, maybe because it was anonymous.

Carvel, London- did you enter the competition? To me it seems the clients and judges clearly did not want to see something unfamiliar. Perhaps some of the designers got carried away and scared the judges - lol. Anyway, I send congrats to the winners and I hope next time.
