The competition is open to individuals and teams of up to four members. The challenge is to design a sustainable building or living component using only locally available materials with the intention of reducing waste in Haiti. The winning designs will be developed further at the College of Architecture + Planning, University of Utah, during summer 2010 and may be utilized in the design and construction of a school in Haiti sponsored by Haitian Roots.

Participants:anyone interested in finding creative solutions to the problems of waste and appropriate construction in Haiti
Registration fee: $10 per student; $20 per professional

PRIZES
Winner: $200 + Publication included in traveling exhibition, book, and multimedia CD
Honorable Mentions: Publication included in traveling exhibition, book, and multimedia CD

OBJECTIVES
• Eliminate waste caused by natural disaster and cast-off materials from incoming aid supplies
• Promote awareness in our community of the hardships that earthquake struck countries are facing in regards to their built environment
• Generate an opportunity for our local community of designers to use their skills to aid countries struggling with post earthquake redevelopment and damage control
• Pool ideas and proposals for consideration as a jumping off point for school project development
• Gather funds for the design and construction of school in Haiti

ELEMENTS
Each group or individual will select a material to meet a particular needs category.

NEED CATEGORIES
• Shelter/Building construction
• Clean water
• Sanitation/ Public health
• Energy

AVAILABLE MATERIALS FOR SELECTION
• Rubble and salvaged rebar from destroyed buildings
• Refuse from first responders’ provisions/ re-purposed shipping materials from aid shipments
• Locally grown natural materials typically considered waste (for example, leftover fibers from pressing sugar cane)

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Entrants will be required to digitally submit maximum 2 boards at 24” x 36” each and 150dpi in pdf format with the provided 5 digit code in a 1”x1” square in the lower right hand corner of each board. Presentation requirements are as follows: description, section, details, perspective (renderings, sketches, or photographs of the mock up).

I'm sorry what?! The submission and the decision are on the same day. Check out the final results... I don't even think they spent time deliberating. The first place entry even has grammar and spelling errors. Competitions should not be encouraged unless people actually take running them seriously.
