DESIGN AND CONSTRUCT A ‘GREEN’ PARKING BAY ON STORE STREET

In San Francisco three years ago, residents of a small block woke up to find something not quite right with the road outside ... where cars were usually parked there was now an urban park.

Inspired by this challenge to urbanism, Ramboll Whitbybird — in association with the 2008 LFA and as co-sponsor of the Kings Cross, Bloomsbury Fitzrovia & Covent Garden hub — is organising an expo of interventions to ‘green’ 14 vacant car parking spaces on Store Street, London WC1, for Friday 4 July.

The idea is that overnight, an army of volunteers — with permission from Camden Council — will create a number of sustainable urban interventions on parking spaces, reminding us in the process just how much space we give up to the car in our city.

We are running a competition to find 14 individuals and/or teams to design and construct the interventions. A panel of key figures from across the architectural, engineering, and design world — including Dr Ken Yeang of Llewellyn Davies Yeang, and George Ferguson, Chairman of Acanthus Ferguson Mann and former RIBA President — will be the judges.
