Sustainable development has been advocated for years to address the balance of human activities natural environment. The idea of sustainability is broadly defined to cover the environmental, economic and social dimensions, yet how to actually achieve this noble goal has always been contested. Especially with the increasing scale of natural disasters, uneven development and social inequality, what sustainability should address has moved beyond saving resources for next generations but how to cope with these imperative issues. How planning implement the concept of sustainability in this contemporary context is the theme of iCities 2013.
Studios are the core of planning education as well as the laboratories where creativities are flourishing. Thisevent is an invitation to planning studio projects worldwide to demonstrate their strategies and solutions toachieve sustainable development. Following the success of 2012 iCities event, this year’s exhibition will continue to provide the platform for learning, exploring and dialogue to stimulate continuous development of innovative planning strategies among academia and practitioners.
