International Solar Tower Design Competition

The solar thermal demonstration power plant, undertaken by Institute of Electrical Engineering, CAS is the “863” key project in the 11th Five-Year Plan Period of China, which is jointly funded by Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST), Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Beijing Municipal Science & Technology Commission. The solar power plant is located at the foot of Badaling Great Wall where is 100 meters away from the Yanqing Entrance of Badaling Express Way. This demonstration power plant is the first solar tower power plant in Asia. Its construction is a milestone for the solar thermal power technology development in China, and will promote Chinese renewable energy development significantly.

A 100 meter high solar tower is a landmark building in this solar tower power plant. An array composed of thousands sun-tracking mirrors, called heliostats, focuses solar energy on a receiver atop the centrally located tower, which makes the finishing point to the power plant and has brilliant visual and communicating effects.

In order to make the solar tower a vivid and bright demonstration of our times, an International Solar Tower Design Competition will be run alongside the solar power plant establishment preparation.
