Open call for 2016
Brief: Construct the Future
In her essay “Downtown is for People” author and activist Jane Jacobs wrote in 1958, “Designing a dream city is easy; rebuilding a living one takes imagination”
This exhibition asks how we can apply new perspectives and transform existing structures to provide new living alternatives. How can we be inspired by what our world can be and can we collaborate to create better ways of being?
Construct the Future will be an exhibition themed around three core living principles; community, technology and accessibility.
Opportunity for Artists
We are seeking exciting proposals from interdisciplinary practitioners and collectives who are socially engaged with issues and mediums surrounding alternative concepts of living today.
Proposals should fit within at least one of our three focus areas:
Community – How can we build structures that support community life without dictating it?
Technology – How can technology be used for people to co-create their environments?
Accessibility – How can we innovate to provide accessible and affordable housing?
We welcome both emerging and established artists to respond to this brief. It is open to anyone who has something to contribute to the ongoing discourse around alternative living. We are interested in – Performance / 2D Design and Making / Installations / Digital / Architecture / Moving Image – tell us what you have in mind.
Artists Commissions
Native are offering three awards of £250 to help support artists’ costs for proposals that we feel strongly capture the three core living principles.
Submissions which do not win an award, but are shortlisted, may still be exhibited and all applicants have the opportunity to be considered for future projects and commissions.
The artist remains the owner of their work but Native retains the right to exhibit the work and use it for promotional purposes should it be used.
Date and Location
The exhibition will run for three days from the 7th – 10th April 2016 in the Hoxton Gallery (http://www.hoxtongallery.com/), Old Street, London.
About Native
Native is a new housing company that wants to improve living options for people. We plan to construct innovative new affordable homes and as a first step, the exhibition aims to contribute to the current dialogue and present alternative living methods.
We are launching our first shared ownership product to coincide with the exhibition. Shared ownership provides a new alternative to a generation who are locked out of a housing choice that they can benefit from. We will then use this model to drive new and even better choices in housing.
We are inspired by alternate realities – anything, anywhere which shows us a different idea of what the future can be.
