Outdoor Lounge is a public sculpture project where all of the installed works must somehow provide seating for one or more persons. This includes seat designs, sculptural forms designed to be sat on and environments that include seating. Performance/Programing within your seating area will be considered, but not required. The works commissioned for this show will be installed on the grassy areas and small parks located on Mt. Royal Avenue between Lafayette Avenue and Cathedral Street. Artscape 2008 is requesting proposals for sculptures, installations, parks, shelters, gathering spaces, architectural forms, or seat designs.

Artscape is a three day summer arts festival in the Mt. Royal Ave. and Charles St. area of Baltimore that attracts an exceptionally large audience where seating is much appreciated. The site is the year round home to the Maryland Institute College of Art, the University of Baltimore, the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, the Lyric Opera House, the Theatre Project, the Station North Arts and Entertainment District, Everyman Theater and the Charles Theater.

Artscape is produced by the Baltimore Office of Promotion & the Arts, Inc. on behalf of the Baltimore Festival of the Arts, Inc., Mayor Sheila Dixon.

Guidelines

  1. Artists, architects and designers working anywhere are eligible to apply.
  2. BOPA will provide stipends to selected proposals between $500 and $4,000. Stipends are for construction and transport of the work. BOPA will provide pads for structures where applicable and onsite installation equipment and labor within reason. Awards will be negotiated after proposals have been selected.
  3. All proposed work should be designed to withstand an outdoor, high-traffic unmonitored environment with very limited maintenance for the duration of the show. Artists should take into consideration the possibility of severe adverse weather conditions, and the safety of the audience.
  4. Works included in the exhibition will not be insured for any damages that may occur on site.
  5. BOPA reserves the right to reproduce images of selected artwork for printed or internet publicity, catalogue, map or marketing purposes.

Application
Application should include a CD-Rom containing 10 jpeg images of recent work, one 8-1/2” x 11” drawing (reproduction of drawings only) of proposed piece, an optional one page written description of the proposed piece, a one page resume and a signed and filled out application and image description form. Image files should be labeled: last name, first name, number corresponding to the description sheet. Each image should be no larger than 1MB in size, and preferably 750KB or less. No application materials will be returned. Please do not send original drawings. No email submissions will be accepted.
