Organized by Architecture For Humanity Vancouver
In association with the Design Foundation of British Columbia
Co-sponsored by the Tyee and the Tyee Solutions Society

Lecture: Thursday April 15, 2010. 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Superchallenge & Gala: Saturday April 17. 9am until Late.

Location: Both events – InterUrban Gallery. 1 East Hastings Street, Vancouver.

Target
To generate a series of viable design and implementation proposals to quickly increase emergency/transitional housing in Vancouver.

Background
Studies have shown that the application of a Housing-First strategy will have a long-term positive effect on the city. Architecture For Humanity Vancouver believes that adequate shelter is a basic human right, and that by navigating the constraints and challenges associated with this task, housing the least privileged provides an opportunity to demonstrate both creativity and social responsibility. We would be honored to secure your participation in this unprecedented ironman design event dedicated to the furthering of these ideals. Save lives, save money, reignite hope; through the power of design and our collective experience, we can help end homelessness now.

Event
Architecture For Humanity Vancouver will be hosting a one-day Charrette+Competition+Gala at the InterUrban Gallery. The Quick Homes Superchallenge will bring the best minds and talents together for one intensive day to generate a series of viable concepts that are ready for prototyping and implementation. Followed by a live jury session at the evening gala, the final design package will be presented to the City of Vancouver and interested NGOs. The design charrette will be preceded by a free evening lecture. Preliminary lecture schedule to come.

Intermodal Steel Building Units, aka shipping containers, are the key component of this superchallenge. They are structural, economical/plentiful, mobile, and modern. This design charrette is not merely an exploration of its form and typology, but an ambitious yet appropriate initiative that integrates hardware, software, and logistics. We strive for a solution that is fast, cheap, and adaptable: one that can be exported to wherever shipping containers are available around the world. AFH Vancouver is presently coordinating with prospective donors and sponsors that may make the realization of such a prototype a very real possibility in the coming year.
