Every year, the Boston Society of Architects administers a prestigious two-stage annual design competition that this year ends with one young designer receiving a stipend of $37,000 to spend eight months traveling the world. Established in 1883, the Rotch Travelling Scholarship is the oldest program of its kind in the United States. The roster of Rotch scholars includes many of the country’s most distinguished architects, including Henry Bacon FAIA, Ralph Walker FAIA, Wallace Harrison FAIA, Louis Skidmore FAIA, Edward Durrell Stone FAIA, Gordon Bunshaft FAIA and Victor Lundy FAIA.

Applications are due January 5. Find guidelines and the application at www.rotchscholarship.org/competition. The website also offers competition history, including the final design program developed by last year’s scholarship recipient, Joshua Simoneau of Koetter Kim & Associates in Boston. Simoneau plans to use his grant to travel through western Europe; find a link to his blog at rotchscholarship.org/competition/winners
