Underground: literally under the earth, but often in a figurative sense – something embedded, that goes unnoticed, or simply placed outside the established culture, even subversive. Our relationship with the bowels of our planet has deep roots. Biblical culture claims the man was created out of the mud, where we return after death by being buried. But there are plenty of activities that keep alive the world underground: extracting energy in the form of oil, gas or even geothermal heat; searching for materials in huge mines so similar to micro urban systems with streets, offices, dining halls and dormitories. Sometimes we live an entire life underground to protected ourselves from a hostile climate, or just for a while in order to study the behavior of our body when deprived of the day-night alternation. We move through tunnels, common shortcuts in our daily life. For reasons of convenience and hygiene, even our waste moves underground. Because land isolates; it isolates from traffic, pollution, dirt and excrement, long before the rationalist dream. Underground is also a safe place for illegal activities and gambling clubs, as well as it has been refuge for the persecuted religious congregations. Sometimes underground means hidden. We place there our cars in parking garages, our military secrets as well as some items having their resting place at the basement of our houses. Underground also means protection. Protection from the not always friendly shafts of sunlight. Protection for our valuables in secret and fascinating bank vaults. Protection during a conflict in resistant bunkers hard to reach. Underground is also synonymous with research. Fairy tale treasures are to be found underground, hidden and protected. Many research centers are underground. We investigate the center of the planet as much as we explore the universe.
Hiding, protecting, exploring, moving and take refuge are just words to describe a world unknown that is a intimate part of us.
