At a time when all is possible by touch of a button, the ability to realize complex and exotic design is more accessible than ever before; nevertheless, constraint fosters creativity and drives innovation: With SPARE THE CHANGE: Design Under $2, we ask young designers to stretch the value of a Canadian Toonie.

THE CHALLENGE
Through the exploration and reconsideration of material, form, and technique, design an object with less than $2.00 Cdn in material cost. Participants will have a chance to be exhibited at IDSwest 2010 and mingle with thousands of visitors. Proof may be requested of origin or cost of materials for all design submitted.

ELIGIBILITY
SPARE THE CHANGE is open to all designers of any design discipline residing within Canada.

IMPORTANT DATES
Early Application Deadline: May 1, 2010
Application Deadline: June 1, 2010
Submission/Delivery Period: Shortlisted Entrants will be contacted by July 1 to arrange physical submission and exhibition logistics.

EVALUATION CRITERIA
Material cost must be less than $2.00 Cdn. Sweat labour costs not included.
Must satisfy at least TWO of the following design principals:
Durability - it should hold up robustly and remain in good condition.
Utility - it should be useful and function well for the people using it.
Beauty - it should delight people and raise their spirits.
