Student Competition, Gulf Coast Green 2010: Reframing Our Built Environment

Registration Deadline:  Thursday, Apr 1, 20107:07 PMEDT

Submission Deadline:  Wednesday, Apr 7, 20107:07 PMEDT

Our built environment has significantly contributed to the many problems plaguing the further prosperity of our cities. As millions of people flock back into the cities we cannot expect to continue with ‘business as usual.’ By necessity we must utilize the existing built environment to develop the buildings, neighborhoods and economic models of tomorrow. We can no longer hope to approach problems with a tabula rasa mindset and must restructure our environment with a view to the future. Even the slightest changes of our practices within the built fabric can have far reaching impact.

Studying the existing conditions of a block or building in any Gulf Coast city, possibly your own, and document its use, energy consumption, and any constructed features of the site. Then create a proposal for varying how this site is used in a way that best realizes the largest impact in the long-term behavior of the system.

These dynamic systems are the products of many processes and we encourage you to team with multiple students of varying disciplines so that you may have the most positive and broad impact possible on your built environment. Architects, engineers, realtors,
businesspeople, graphic designers, farmers, bankers, mechanics, artists, we all co-exist in these environments and a complete proposal engages and considers the impact of all these professions.
