AUSTIN, TEXAS - On October 4, 2007, Art Alliance Austin (formerly The Austin Fine Arts Alliance) announced a myriad of changes to the organization including name changes, a new site, and a new collaboration with the Austin Chapter of the American Institute of Architects, AIA-Austin, to launch an ideas competition to design Temporary Outdoor Gallery Spaces (TOGS). Today, the organization opens the application process.
Art Alliance Austin is harnessing the momentum of moving their main event, Art City Austin, to the streets lining Lady Bird Lake at the doorstep of Austin City Hall in 2008. Selected in 2008 and fabricated from the winning design in 2009, temporary architecture installations will unify the annual outdoor exhibit, provide prestigious gallery space for selected artists, and showcase emerging professionals within the architecture community.
The collaborative endeavor will by juried by a panel of art and architecture luminaries, including Architects/Designers Louise Harpman and Goil Amornvivat, gallerist Wally Workman, Arthouse curator Elizabeth Dunbar, and the chief curator of the Austin Museum of Art, Dana Friis-Hansen. Full juror bios available at www.artallianceaustin.org. The intent of the competition is to bring Austin to the forefront of the international world of the art and architecture communities. The top ten entries for the TOGS Ideas Competition will be exhibited at various events through out Art Week Austin 2008 and at Art City Austin 2008.
A Grand Prize will be awarded along with $1,000 US and the winning design will be published in various art and architecture publications. A second prize winner will be chosen and awarded $500 US and a third prize winner will be chosen and awarded $250 US. These winners will also be exhibited during Art City Austin 2008. All winners will be notified and announced on April 09, 2008.
TOGS: PHASE I (2008) Art Alliance Austin and AIA-Austin expect that successful TOGS proposals will push the limits of creativity for viewing art. Within the confines of a 10’-0” x 10’-0” x 12’-0” or 10’-0” x 20’-0” x 12’-0” structure, the space provided will operate much like a gallery. Design proposals must identify a temporary means of installation for the TOGS, provide illustrations for how the TOGS reinvent the outdoor exhibition space, and how various art mediums can be displayed. Notably, designs are encouraged to incorporate sustainable and environmentally friendly solutions.
TOGS: PHASE II (2009+) While Phase I asks that entrants push the limits of the TOGS, all attempts will be made to produce a full-scale version of the TOGS in Phase II. The winner will be invited to collaborate with a local architect to realize a working proposal. Local codes and restrictions will apply and the TOGS will need to meet any and all local laws where applicable. A budget for the TOGS will be established in Phase II and the feasibility of construction will be part of the final execution. The entrant may wish to consider these limitations that would be necessary for the execution of a full-scale prototype, but it is not required for the Ideas Competition of Phase I.
ELIGIBILITY Any architecture or interior design professional/student who has completed their education within 10 years of the competition announcement is eligible. Student applicants must be in their final year of architecture/interior design school or enrolled in an architecture/interior design graduate program. A two-person team collaboration is allowed however, one member of the team must meet the above criteria. Limit of one entry per person or team.
