An uninvited pavilion for the 2014 Venice Biennale
Commissioned by Reality Cues // Curated by @Archistophanes and @Antiquides
CALL FOR ENTRIES:
It's Venice Biennale time and Reality Cues is getting in the spirit by creating a participatory exhibit in response to Rem Koolhaas' curatorial theme Fundamentals. Rem hypothesizes that 'national identity has been sacrificed on the altar of modernity' and asks participating countries to analyze their respective histories over the past 100 years as they confronted an increasingly fluid global landscape. While Rem acknowledges the survival of some 'unique national characteristics and attitudes' he is primarily interested in the evolution towards a single, modern architecture. Reality Cues, however, is interested in the national characteristics and attitudes that have been deemed architecturally irrelevant by modernists, but because of their historic value have evolved in order to not only survive globalization but to endure with cultural specificity. Thus, our research begins where Rem’s ends and continues not towards a unified architectural movement, but towards an assemblag
e of evolving undetermined identities. How removed can architectural elements be from their original form and function while still embodying the essence of the traditional identities they once invoked? What is fundamental to the endurance of identities?
