COMPETITION: Triumph Architectural SketchBook Award
TOPIC: Bus Shelter, Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA
INTRODUCTION:
This International ideas Architectural Free-Hand Sketch Awards competition is organised by ArchTriumph and calls on Architects, Architecture Graduates, Architecture Students, Designers, Landscape Architects, Engineers, City Planner or Urbanist to enter a sketch and a design idea or concept for an original modular bus shelter to be located along the bus route running from Avenue Leandro .N. Alem within Retiro district to Avenue Paseo Colon within San Telmo district in Buenos Aires City, Argentina.
AIM:
The aim of this award is not only to recognise the role of sketch in the architectural design process in shaping ideas, addressing a problem and engaging collaborators but also recognising the contribution of sketching to any design discussion or collaboration.
This competition investigates, explores and emphasises the importance and function of sketching or drawing as visual thinking in design and how it supports design reasoning. Sketches are viewed as central to architectural design and serve as reference to be used, transformed, or engaged in a later composition. Visual representations such as freehand sketches and concept diagrams seem to play a significant role in design problem solving process.
Design, like all problem solving activities, involves reasoning, making decisions, expressing ideas, verifying and evaluating design proposals and then taking action. Drawing is a vehicle for design reasoning, and therefore the spontaneous marks made on paper during sketching form a partial record of the designer's thinking.
Most designers sketch early design ideas with a pencil on paper with sketching still the quickest and most direct means to produce visual representations of ideas. The ambiguity of free hand sketching allows multiple interpretations and thus stimulates the discovery and production of more design alternatives or configurations
THE CHALLAENGE:
The design challenge is to come up with a design for a modular Bus Shelter to be located along the bus route running from Avenue Leandro .N. Alem within Retiro district to Avenue Paseo Colon within San Telmo district in Buenos Aires City, Argentina. The goal is to provide an architectural solution that is functional, feasible, repeatable, elegant and reflecting the cultural context to replace the existing bus shelter.
The Bus Shelter design should reflect the city and responds to its unique location, the city's characteristics and cultural environment. It must also provide a shelter space for up to 15 persons (with standing and seating distribution open to participants) to wait for the bus. The bus shelter must protect users from the elements such rain, sun while providing circulation, seating and consideration for security. The bus shelter design must include a signage element for orientation and advertisement.
