Art and architecture are important yardsticks by which a civilization can be measured.   In 2009 the  concept for the Warming Huts: An Art + Architecture Exposition on Ice was launched to give users of the Assiniboine Credit Union River Trail a chance to engage five very different pieces of art and architecture.  Five warming huts were created and placed on the Assiniboine River between The Forks and the Osborne Street Bridge in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

An estimated 450,000 skaters used the trail during the six weeks the skating trail was open in 2010.

The 2011 edition of the Warming Huts project will include an international competition for the design and construction of three (3) new huts.   A fourth hut will be designed and built by a team of students from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba.   A fifth hut will be designed by a world renowned architect.
