ZER01 Announces “Build Your Own World” Visual Design Competition

Emerging Designers from Around the Globe Invited to Create Graphics for 2010 01SJ Biennial

Submission Deadline Extended: June 30, 2009

SAN JOSE, Calif. (May 15, 2009) – ZER01: The Art & Technology Network, producers of the 01SJ Biennial: a Global Festival of Art on the Edge which celebrates the intersection of art, technology, and digital culture, invite emerging designers to interpret the theme for the 3rd 2010 01SJ Biennial, “Build Your Own World.”  The competition, which is open to emerging designers around the globe, begins April 1 and closes June 30. Winners will be announced July 31.

A jury of leading artists and designers from diverse fields, from graphic design to architecture, will select the top ten design entries. The panel of distinguished judges includes: Sara Diamond, President, Ontario College of Art & Design; Elliott Earls, Designer-in-Residence and Head of the 2D Design Department, Cranbrook Academy
of Art; Jodan Geiger, Founder, Ga-Ga; Mike Kuniavsky, CEO, ThingM; John Sobol, Writer, Performer, Cultural Catalyst, and Senior Consultant at 76Design; Brett Terpeluk, Designer, LEED AP, STUDIOTERPELUK; and Jeff Zwerner, Founder and Principal, Factor Design. Entries will be evaluated on concept, originality, visual appeal, and suitability for print and digital applications. The top ten designs selected by the Jury will be published on the 01SJ Biennial website (01SJ.org), where guests will be invited to vote for their favorite design. The final six winning designs will be used for a global marketing campaign to promote the 2010 01SJ Biennial. Each of the six winning designs will be released in poster format, one design per month for six months prior to the Biennial. Winning designs will also be featured on the 01SJ Biennial website and published in the exhibition program.

About Build Your Own World
As artists, designers, engineers, architects, and as citizens, we have the inspiration, innovation, tools, and ideas to build a world that we want to live in, conceptually and actually, virtually and physically, for better or worse. The future is not about prediction; it’s about construction, collaboration, and powerful ideas that come together to create a future that matters.  How can we as resourceful and knowledgeable global citizens build a desirable world in the face of climate change, economic breakdown, political instability, and cultural divisiveness? ZER01 encourages designers to build their ideal world and enter our visual design competition.
