The Institute for Advanced Architecture of Catalonia and HP are pleased to announce the 4th Advanced Architecture Contest, on the theme of CITY-SENSE: Shaping our environment with real-time data.

The aim of the competition is to promote discussion and research through which to generate insights and visions, ideas and proposals that help us envisage what the city and the habitat of the 21st century will be like.

The competition is open to architects, engineers, planners, designers and artists who want to contribute to progress in making the world more habitable by developing a proposal capable of responding to emerging challenges in areas such as ecology, information technology, architecture, and urban planning, with the purpose of balancing the impact real-time data collection might have on sensor-driven cities.

The competition jury, which is composed of architects, professionals in a wide range of fields and directors of some of the world's foremost architecture schools, is looking for outstanding proposals at any scale, for any city in the world. Competition entries should be submitted via the Internet on Smart Cities, Eco neighborhoods, Self-sufficient buildings, Intelligent homes or any other proposal that analyzes the phenomena of sensor-driven cities and intelligent behavioural systems.

The proposal should include whatever texts, videos, drawings and other images may be needed to make it fully understandable.

The competition prizes will consist of: Three scholarships for the IaaC Masters in Advanced Architecture program for academic year 2012-13, cash prizes, and an HP latest-generation printer. The selected projects will go on show in a major exhibition, opening in Barcelona in May 2012, which will travel to key cities around the world. The best projects will also be featured in a book to be published by Actar-Birkhauser, like in the three previous editions: SELF-SUFFICIENT HOUSING, SELF-FAB HOUSE and SELF-SUFFICIENT CITY.

Spark:Mobility is a Go. The first Call For Entry was live as of April 2.

We want to thank all our transpo friends for your encouragement! As one Chief Designer for a Korean automaker pointed out, this story needs to be about The Dream–of an efficient, sustainable and beautiful new transportation reality. We hope to help make it happen.

In this, one of our most exciting new competitions, we will explore and discover the rapidly expanding universe of transportation. Our focus will be on developments that are “green,” in the sense that they exemplify a commitment to using natural resources more efficiently. This unique perspective will shine a spotlight on audacious designs and technologies that challenge the current state of the art. We hope all participants in these many fields and disciplines will tilt their windmills into the wind and send us their Sparks!

SPACE announced opening of 2012 the 30th SPACE PRIZE for International Students of Architectural Design (SPACE PRIZE 2012). For its 30th anniversary, Ben van Berkel of UNStudio is invited as a judge for the competition, with the topic ‘Designing for the Inventive Economy’.

Architecture, whilst enjoying a beautiful and rich history, must of course also look towards and design for the future. What can the profession learn from the burgeoning companies and how they are organised? So how can we instrumentalise the systematic aspect of these organisations and adapt them to create an apparatus for architecture? And what will this apparatus mean for the production of architecture in the future?

SPACE PRIZE 2012 will have an open presentation for final judging and award ceremony on Oct. 31st, 2012.
The finalists will be on exhibition during Oct. 31st - Nov. 7th, 2012.

SPACE announced opening of 2012 the 12th SPACE PRIZE for International Students of Interior Design (SPACE PRIZE 2012). With the topic ‘Convergence’, we are going to discover the extent to which design can converge and develop with different areas.

The fierce transitions that come with rapid informatization are today fundamentally changing humans, social forms, and even life itself. In order to cope with such changes, it is important to create innovative new knowledge, new culture, and new business methods which utilize convergence and expand new horizons beyond the boundary of existing learning such as natural science, social science, humanities, and business studies. An in-depth understanding of the society and culture of humans and the application of this in an integrated approach to design methods incorporating science and technology are, therefore, crucial.

SPACE PRIZE 2012 will have an open presentation for final judging and award ceremony on Oct. 30th, 2012.
The finalists will be on exhibition during Oct. 31st - Nov. 7th, 2012.

For more information, please visit http://www.space-prize.com, mail to spaceprize.i@gmail.com, and call the number +82-2-3670-3639.

"The history of humanity, preferring warm and temperate countries, has poorly prepared mankind to accept the diversity of the earth, especially in high latitude locations where hours of sunshine are sometimes scarce." Louis-Edmond Hamelin, geographer and founder of the Northern Studies Center of the Université Laval, Québec Canada.

"LIGHTITUDE" is the theme of the 2012 CLU foundation contest. This year’s theme invites participants to reflect on lighting the communities near the Polar Circle. Due to their high latitude these communities are subjected to particular lighting phenomena. Since light is an essential part of every living organism, it or its lack thereof has a profound effect on humankind. Can these isolated communities benefit from a more adapted artificial outdoor lighting solution to satisfy their particular Nordic needs and identities?

These are some of the questions that the CLU foundation members invite the participants from all walks of life to reflect and create upon.

We are accepting graduate architecture projects from students who have recently graduated or are currently graduating in the field of architecture (see Graduate Architecture's FAQs for further eligibility information) www.GraduateArchitecture.com. The deadline for submission is August 31st 2012 at 6pm (GMT+1). All projects submitted after this time will not be considered for the Graduate Architecture Prize of 2012, you will however be eligible for next year's competition in August.

Please follow the following guidelines in order to participate:
Submit in English Language: Please submit your final project in English in order for us to fully understand what you wish to portray. In the last edition, several projects were submitted in a different language and although we did our best to translate them ourselves, it was still very difficult for us to grasp the essence of those projects. We encourage you to provide text in your own language as well, to reach a larger audience. If you do submit a project written in your native language, please include a clear and concise summary in English.

Max. 10 Presentation Boards: Please do not exceed 10 presentation boards (scaled size approximately A4 in size, for an average computer monitor), either in portrait or landscape view to be submitted to Register@GraduateArchitecture.com. The total size may not exceed 10mb and should be sent as a single .PDF file.

Project Description included in presentation boards: A clear and and to the point description of your final project is necessary for us as well as other readers to understand your thoughts. All text should be included in your 10 presentation panels.

5-digit code: In addition you can make up your own 5 digit reference code (composed of either letters and/or numbers for organizational reasons). It can be any combination of letters and/or numbers (please keep in mind it is only for a reference so make up a code you can remember). This code does not need to be on your presentation panels but do name the .PDF with your code (example: John_Doe_ABC01.pdf).

Contact Information: Submit your personal or group contact information in the following format: 01. Project title 02. Names of all participants & e-mail addresses. 03. The university at which you attained your architectural degree 04. The names and contact information of the tutors at your University. Send us this information both in the text body of the email and in a separate .PDF file. Please disclose that you wish opt-out of having your information published, should this be the case. If you would like to have your contact info published, please include this information on the last page of your presentation boards.

Two (2) Project Thumbnails: Please also include an image that you would like to represent your project, this will most probably be your best rendering or most illustrative picture. (Dimensions height: 270 x width: 350 pixels for the first thumbnail and height: 390 x width: 780 pixels for the second). Click here to download the thumbnail template/ description (served as a guideline, its design is fully up to you as long as you include all necessary information and limit the dimensions of 270 x 350 & 390 x 780 pixels).

Send your digital presentation boards and project thumbnail to Register@GraduateArchitecture.com. As the email's subject, only only include your name and university at which you have done your final project. Please don't hesitate to contact us for any questions you might have, but please read our FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) first.

The jury will consist of Architects, Urbanists, Designers, Students and some of the previous winners of the Graduate Architecture Award. Winners will be based on all-round creativity, design concept, problem solving, sustainability and more (there is not one, but many aspect projects will be reviewed on).

This new competition from anonymous.d wishes to challenge architects, Designers and Engineers from around the world to re-imagine the design of a spiritual space in the 21st century.

The design of a religious/spiritual building is a highly complex task. Different eras symbolize different architectural manifestations based on their spiritual affiliation. A Japanese temple and a Gothic Cathedral are both structures designed and built for man in service to his spiritual philosophy. But one is humanly scaled and harmoniously integrated in oceans of nature; the other is richly ornamented and heroically scaled structure showcasing power and technical genius.

Along history, religious spaces were always a place for architectural and structural investigations. A place where new aesthetics were born and new technologies were introduced. Some are known for their extraordinary structural performances , some showcase the balance between mass and void and others express their spiritual philosophy by a minimalistic use of light and shadows. Some of the world's most renowned structures are places of worship.

The task is to examine social, cultural, economical and historical aspects related to different faiths and societies and propose an architectural response that takes into consideration the effects of globalization, advances in technology and sustainability and other architectural and urban strategies. The proposed work should investigate ideas related to the technical complexity of the building, the symbolic expression of the space and the role of spiritual places in our society and implement them to current and future experiences, spatial organizations, functionalities and aesthetics.

Spiritual spaces - Where should we integrate them in our cities if at all? In what configuration? Should they be part of our homes or public infrastructures? should they be a vacation destination?...  The purpose of spiritual.(d) annual competition is to encourage creative individuals and teams from around the world to participate in an open architectural and philosophical debate, to nurture the architectural evolution of our environment and to redefine the role of the spiritual space in the contemporary world.

///the COMPETITION

Recently, New York’s state government has been trying to legalize non-Indian casinos throughout the state. Current proposals are asking for the construction of seven “Vegas”-sized casinos throughout New York. Although lawmakers have pushed to keep the casinos out of New York City, this ideas competition aims to investigate what a casino would do to New York City and, likewise, what New York City would do to a casino. The New York casinos are being pitched by their supporters as “regional revitalization” tools. Although Manhattan is arguably in no need of revitalization, it does have one clear zone that could use rethinking—Hudson Yards and the area around its neighboring convention center. The existing Jacob Javits Center remains an isolated structure surrounded by a no-man’s-land of parking and train tracks. Cut off from restaurants, hotels, and entertainment, it is hardly an inviting location for a large convention, nor does it allow for or engender connection to the city at-large. You might as well have your convention in Secaucus. There is talk of relocating the Center to Queens, to be sited next to the recently opened “racino” at Aqueduct Racetrack—a major financial success thus far, and example of the excitement people in the five boroughs have for gambling. The proposed convention center would be the largest in the United States. This competition asks entrants to leave the convention center at its current location on Manhattan’s West Side, but replace it and add a hotel and casino to the complex. Entrants are asked to rethink this zone so as to create a dynamic destination in the city for tourists, residents, and convention-goers alike. At the same time, the complex should become a draw for non convention-goers. If a Vegas-style themed casino clearly wouldn’t work in New York City, then what would bring New Yorkers out to gamble? Is it a family focused zone for tourists or an adults-only retreat? The proposed building should incorporate state-of-the-art facilities for both modern gambling and high-tech conventions. The convention center should be unique while remaining flexible, and the casino should shake off both cheesy Vegas aethetics and the dry desperation of Atlantic City to strive for something architecturally rich and complex—while simultaneously entertaining. The complex should also find a way to reconnect to Manhattan’s nearby entertainment districts. Madison Square Garden, Times Square, and the High Line seem cut off, despite their proximity. This complex should aim to recharge its surroundings in the same way the High Line did the Meatpacking District, bringing in pedestrians and cleaning up the area. On the western, waters edge of Manhattan, the site also includes a large pier that can be used for a portion of the program or turned into outdoor parks and recreation areas. The site includes the land the current convention center lies on, the space over the West Side Yard train yard, and the aforementioned waterfront pier. The West Side Yard was designed to accommodate an overbuild in its air rights, and space was left between the tracks for columns to support a platform above the tracks. The history of proposals for the very same site includes the ongoing Hudson Yards Redevelopment and the IFCCA “Competition for Manhattan’s West Side.”

We hardly ever take notice of the time we spend waiting daily. Buses, trains, the tube, escalators, lifts - all these are spaces of waiting in order to reach a destination or continue a journey.

They are public places that change their quality and atmosphere at different times of the day. We are drawn to the view outside the bus window, on escalators we get glimpses of people’s faces going in the other direction or glances of countless advertisements lined up on the wall.

Can you recall having to wait for someone or something and visualise a memory of the place where it happened? We invite you to think of different kinds of places and reasons for waiting, and through the means of photography, present how you experience it. Are we conscious of it at all times? Do you stop to wait? How does it change your sense of time? Maybe it’s the place around you that is waiting or is it just a by-product of our daily life?

Requirements:

Every participant is entitled to upload one photograph per registration.
The photo has to be uploaded as a .jpg file and cannot be bigger than 5mb in size.

The document has to measure at least 2000x2000 pixels with a maximum of 5000x5000 pixels. The format (ratio height to width) can be chosen freely.

The document has to be named with the registration number only. (For example, “20134.jpg.”)

Competition:

It is a single stage competition. We’re looking to receive photos which surprise, enlighten and inspire, as well as present your intention and idea. The quality of the entries will be judged according to the depth of narrative and visual presentation.

1st Prize: US$ 1,000 (ONE THOUSAND US DOLLARS)

1st Prize, 2nd Prize and 3rd Prize will be published in international art and design media as well as on the Homemade Dessert website

We are happy to announce the next competition in the Spark:Concept series–the only one for the remainder of 2012. We will be gathering the finest examples of concept design from around the world, and hope you will participate! After a resounding success with the 2011 Spark:Concept Awards, we look forward to a great event in the coming months. If you are an architect with a great proposal, a car designer with a bright idea or a brilliant student with a grand thesis– make sure you see the Spark! The entry system is open 24/7, so THIS is the time to Spark.

DEFINITIONS
The Spark Concept Awards are for work that is in the idea or proposal stage. For example, this would include architectural proposals, concept automobiles and design student work.

This competition does not include design work which has been built, produced, realized or is in pre-production, which can be found in our other dedicated competitions– Spark:Communication, Spark:Product and Spark:Space.

Spark:Concept is for any discipline of design. This includes graphic design, product, UX, motion, architecture, interiors, transportation and others.

All these competitions continue Spark’s mission, criteria and categories. All Design, and all designers are welcome at Spark.

Thanks for your interest in Spark. Please tell your friends–there’s a new home for Good Design!

TIMEFRAME
Because concept design entries are often student work, Spark:Concept events are timed to facilitate entries from the main school semester—the Spring term. All Spark events are international in scope and accept entries from all designers, everywhere.

PROCESS
The Competitions are judged along the same lines as earlier Spark events—same Criteria, Categories, website and registration system. They are multi-disciplinary and multi-level. They are two-phase competitions.

There are two pricing tiers—one for companies and professional designers, and a second for non-professionals, non-profits, students and recent graduates (i.e., in the past 24 months, with status provable via student ID or copy of degree to win a Spark).

Spark:Concept is entirely “virtual.” That is, it is entered and conducted online, over the Spark website. No materials, boards or designs are delivered to Spark:Concept. All entries are via the website and first phase judging takes place online as well.

All Spark juries are international and come from across the spectrum of design disciplines, media, educators and experts.

An international design competition was launched on April 15, 2012 expected to produce a design that will inform the reconstruction of Notre Dame de l’Assomption, the Roman Catholic Cathedral of Port-au-Prince, Haiti destroyed 2 years ago.

In an article appearing in the current issue of Faith&Form, a magazine dedicated to the architecture of places of worship, Mgr Guire Poulard, Archbishop of Port-au-Prince calls on architects of the world to offer their ideas for building a new cathedral. He writes that the “ideal design must engage the future and celebrate life.”  He continues in noting that a successful plan “must be mindful of the past and memorialize the thousands who died and were injured in the earthquake of January 12, 2010”

Details of the competition open to architects of the world are provided on the site at www.ndapap.org.  The site also contains historical information and other data on the destroyed structure and construction site.

Exploration of natural systems from the microscopic to the universal unearths vast design potential for overlaying cultural, ecological, and life cycle flows toward determining new architectonic strategies.

Sponsored by New York-based d3, the annual d3 Natural Systems competition for 2012 invites architects, designers, engineers, and students to collectively explore the potential of analyzing, documenting, and deploying nature-based influences in architecture, interiors, and designed objects.  The competition calls for innovative proposals that advance sustainable thought and performance through the study of intrinsic environmental geometries, behaviors, and flows.  By identifying, examining, and applying their structural order on form and function- -bottom-up, performance-based solutions for limitless building typologies, functional programs, and material conditions may be realized.

An architecture of emergence suggests that design expression requires purpose beyond formal assumption and aesthetic experimentation itself.  Concurrent with sustainable thought, the d3 Natural Systems competition assumes that architecture does not simply form, but rather perform various functions beyond those conventionally associated with buildings.  Design submissions must be environmentally responsible while advancing inventive conceptual solutions.  Although proposals should be technologically feasible, they may suggest fantastical architectural visions of a sustainable global future.

The d3 Natural Systems competition allows designers freedom to approach their creative process in a scale-appropriate manner--from large-scale master planning endeavors, to individual building concepts, to notions of interior detail.  Accordingly, there are no restrictions on site, scale, program, or building typology, proposals should carefully address their selected context.

With successive declines on the financial markets, recent times have seen a growing interest in the theoretical debate about alternatives to the ongoing capitalist system. Gathering international thinkers from all walks of political life, the diagnosis on the ongoing economic crisis situation tends to demonstrate that the system as it is nowadays needs to be rethought and perhaps re-established globally.

The recent Wall Street protests and the associated developing movements around the world indicates the depth to which the inequality generated by the economic system and the demand for global change has penetrated the popular consciousness. – The financial crisis is no longer a matter for the decision makers and having reached the masses is transforming the political and national – or trans-national – spheres.

At the same time creative alternatives – in trying to deal with the growth of poverty amongst the population – propose new ways of living, celebrating an ideology based on trust, solidarity, community and action.
Cities… Their attractiveness was originally based on the economic opportunities they provided to their inhabitants: job opportunities created a massive influx from the countryside, contributing actively to their spatial transformation by means of increasing population density and growth. However, in a prospective future if attractiveness is no longer necessarily related to profit making – as the symbolic 99% idealized by the “Occupy” movements around the world claim – the question of the future of existing cities is wide open.

WHAT IF… ?
What if the change was tomorrow? What would be the characteristics of a system not based on profit making? What would be the consequences of a new system for the way in which we use urban spaces?
Would cities enter a transformation process, becoming specialized centres in a globalized system?
Would the global network of cities tend to erase borders or to affirm and reinforce them? What is (could be) the scale (the impact) of the change?

First competition cycle: #1Shop

LAUNCHING DATE April 1, 2012

In the last centuries we have discovered the advantages of global exchange of goods, but what if we would take a step back and see what we really need? Show us your ideas to re-think the shop, the way we consume and a city with another system of shopping culture. Everything is valuable from small interventions up to global concepts.

In the perspective of a mutual collaboration to raise new opportunites in the field of fashion design, Néo presents “ Bag in Town”,  design competition in collaboration with IED and Eastpak, the authentic urban lifestyle brand.

Creative designers from around the globe are asked to take part in the new design competition Bag in Town - A bag for 24 hours. Held in collaboration with the Istituto Europeo di Design (IED), within the portal creativecontexts.com, this ground-breaking competition explores the relationship between the bag and the urban environment. Encouraging proposals from the worlds of fashion, design and communications, Bag in Town aims to redefine the aesthetic and functional basis underlying bag design, asking one clear and simple question: “What constitutes the perfect bag for 24 hours?”
EASTPAK has always had an eye for the creative and unconventional. Which is why the brand is teaming up with IED – the international network for advanced training in design, fashion, visual communication and management – to give young minds the chance to express their creativity and explore new avenues for engaging their environment.

The Bag in Town design competition is open to anyone over the age of 18. Interested participants are invited to visit the dedicated website www.bagintown.net. Design proposals are accepted by the portal up until July 1st, 2012. The six best projects will be selected on the basis of style and innovative point of view – three by a specialized jury and three by the wider public.

The prizes? The six selected designers will be treated to a once-in-a-lifetime experience at the IED Creative Factory in Milan. Over six intensive days, the finalists will receive expert guidance from EASTPAK product and marketing managers and IED design management specialists with the goal of manufacturing a prototype of each design and transforming their respective projects into reality. These prototypes will then be published on the Bag in Town website and once again subjected to public scrutiny. The design earning the most votes will be awarded a cash prize of €5000 and the opportunity to see the winning creation on the market in 2013, as part of the new EASTPAK collection.

This year, we are seeking integrated design, planning, environmental restoration and engineering responses that address border, gateway and edge/fringe conditions in cities worldwide. Proposals should address urban sites currently facing chronic liveability challenges that are largely the result of a city’s location on a physical, political, cultural or economic border. Proposals should be implementable. In addition to a cash prize for the winning team, we will be engaging a local organization to help advance the proposed project. Responses can range from a strategic framework to a surgical micro-response, from a whole landscape system to a single piece of architecture. Entrants should demonstrate a holistic and sustainable approach. Judges will value creativity and innovation, but your response must be fundamentally feasible.

The competition is open as of 16 April to students worldwide. Students may work as individuals or in teams of up to four. The deadline for final submissions is 31 August, and pre-registration must occur by that deadline any time prior to the final submission. Finalists will be announced by 1 October. During the week of 12 November, finalists will present their submissions to a panel of judges in Shanghai, and a final winner or winners will be announced. At stake is USD$15,000 as a cash prize, as well as USD$25,000 to help see the winning scheme implemented. For full submission requirements and competition details, download the competition brief.

We are very pleased to announce that, in partnership with New York City's Department of Parks & Recreation, the 2012 Land Art Generator Initiative design competition will be held for a site within Freshkills Park (the former Fresh Kills landfill) in Staten Island.

The design brief, to be released January 2012, will be similar to that of the 2010 edition. LAGI 2012 is an ideas competition to design a site-specific public artwork that, in addition to its conceptual beauty, has the ability to harness energy cleanly from nature and convert it to electricity for the utility grid.

The expansiveness of the design site at Freshkills Park presents the opportunity to power the equivalent of thousands of homes with the artwork. The stunning beauty of the reclaimed landscape and the dramatic backdrop of the Manhattan skyline will provide an opportune setting from which to be inspired, and it offers the perfect environment for a showcase example of the immense potential of aesthetically interesting renewable energy installations for sustainable urban planning.

The monetary prize award ($20,000) will not guarantee a commission for construction; however, LAGI will work with stakeholders both locally (NYC) and internationally to pursue possibilities for implementation of the most pragmatic and aesthetic LAGI designs.

Jury members include:
-Bjarke Ingels, BIG-Bjarke Ingels Group
-Dr. Henry Kelly, Acting Assistant Secretary and Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy at the U.S. Department of Energy
-Jean Gardner, Associate Professor of Social Ecological History, Parsons New School, School of Constructed Environments
-Public Design Commission of the City of New York
-Patricia Watts & Amy Lipton, ecoartspace
-Melanie Cohn, Executive Director, Council on the Arts & Humanities for Staten Island
-Staten Island Economic Development Corporation

About Freshkills Park:
"At 2,200 acres, Freshkills Park will be almost three times the size of Central Park and the largest park developed in New York City in over 100 years. The transformation of what was formerly the world’s largest landfill into a productive and beautiful cultural destination will make the park a symbol of renewal and an expression of how our society can restore balance to its landscape.

In addition to providing a wide range of recreational opportunities, including many uncommon in the city, the park’s design, ecological restoration and cultural and educational programming will emphasize environmental sustainability and a renewed public concern for our human impact on the earth." - FRESHKILLS PARK

About The Land Art Generator Initiative
Founded in 2009, LAGI is a project of Society for Cultural Exchange, a 501(c)(3) organization committed to providing a forum for local and international communities to engage with the arts and the environment through interdisciplinary and cross-cultural collaborations (http://societyforculturalexchange.org/). LAGI is a multifaceted project that is focused on expanding public awareness of and support for renewable energy.

The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) is pleased to announce its 2nd Annual International Student Tall Building Design Competition to be held in conjunction with the CTBUH 9th World Congress Shanghai 2012.

The goal of the competition is to shed new light on the meaning and value of tall buildings in modern society. As noted by the 2011 Competition Jury Chair, William Pedersen of Kohn Pedersen Fox, “There has been a major transition in the sense of the value of the tall building and what it can contribute to the urban realm, and society in general. This transition moves the tall building away from just an instrument of financial exploitation and toward a development highly concerned with its impact on the city, the environment, and the urban habitat.”

The Architecture Foundation and Scarcity and Creativity in the Built Environment (SCIBE) - a trans-European research project led by Jeremy Till with teams in London, Oslo/Reykjavik and Vienna - are looking for innovative strategies to address conditions of scarcity in London. Based on the understanding that architects and designers hold the capacity to intervene in existing social, cultural, political, economic and environmental systems in ways that may exceed the production of objects alone, teams are invited to develop a future vision for Bromley-by-Bow, the area where SCIBE London primarily works, by proposing the devices and approaches that would be needed to achieve this vision, starting now.

The process is open to anyone, and we welcome proposals from beyond the fields of architecture and design, in particular those engaged with creative approaches to socio-economic scenarios. The AF and SCIBE will be holding two events in July 2012, from which collaborating teams will emerge. During stage one participants will be issued with the briefing document and will prepare first responses to the issues raised. Prospective participants should register their interest by completing the registration form and returning it before the registration deadline on 14 June 2012. Further information regarding all remaining registration formalities will then follow.

CityVision Architecture Competition is an annual competition held by the homonymous journal of architecture CityVision Magazine that invites architects, designers, students, artists and creatives to develop urban and visionary proposals with the aim of stimulating new ideas for the contemporary city.
All through innovative ideas and methodologies that can improve the connection between the historical, contemporary and future city vocation, thus promoting a positive evolution of the critical architectural historiography.

Globalization, environmental concerns, new economic and cultural politics, adaptability to the existing context combined with the use of vibrant ideas, original technologies and new softwares for representation are some of the key elements that should be taken into account to formulate the most original project proposal.

New York CityVision is the fourth international ideas competition launched by CityVision. The competition wants you to imagine New York in its future if the manipulation of the urban context and its architectural objects, joined with its inhabitants, will be influenced by SPACE and TIME.

The New York ideas will be judged by an international jury which will have as president Joshua Prince-Ramus, founder of the office REX and again Eva Franch i Gilabert, Roland Snooks, Shohei Shigematsu, Alessandro Orsini and Mitchell Joachim, all of whom are distingueshed by the large experimentation willingness in their work. Inside this issue you will have the opportunity to virtually meet some of them, their ideas and their philosophies and to have a look to their work’s images.

Now, we officially launch New York CityVision Competition!

Let’s start with the proposals, we expect only to be surprised by your creativity!

Announcing the SLANT AWARDS SPRING 2012 Competition and this competition is open to all, with the challenge being to design a concept plan for a city sector which is undergoing urban renewal.

As in our previous competitions we want participants to have as free a hand as possible when designing this project; therefore we are keeping the brief and the entry requirements to a minimum.

The city in question is not a real city, it has been designed solely for this competition, and its location is not being specified.

It is a generic city that could be almost anywhere in the world and participants are free to choose the country in which you would like this imaginary city to be located.

This is a worldwide competition open to all those who have an interest in landscape design and urban planning, and students are especially encouraged to enter.

If we are to tackle this problem head-on and create a more intelligent, more creative way of organizing the increasingly expensive seats on a commercial airplane, we can take one step closer to a compromise that will let airlines keep their profit margins while customers can comfortably kick back, relax, and enjoy their ride through the sky.

The Goal

We believe the on-flight experience could be greatly improved by applying a smarter layout for seats in the coach and economy class sections of commercial aircrafts.

The seat layout that most airplanes use today is the same design that was brought into style when airplanes were first becoming popular. That is a big problem. When airplanes were first becoming popular the engineers and designers focused solely on the logistics of getting a certain amount of bodies from point A to point B without having to seriously consider a customer's comfort on the journey.

The goal of this competition is to propose a new seat layout for the coach and economy class sections of commercial airplanes that will make the flying experience more pleasant and comfortable. The new layout should be able to accommodate at least 95% of the actual proposal (and why not even more!).

This competition asks you to illustrate how the life of your building will unfold through time – over an hour, day, year, decade, or perhaps a century. Your submission should demonstrate the integration of time in your design proposal by highlighting how it will accommodate the different types of change described in the competition brief.

We seek innovative design proposals that challenge existing orthodoxies about adaptability in the built environment. The awards comprise of cash prizes (1st prize UK £1,500, 2nd Prize  £1000, 3rd prize £500); publication of the top entries in the upcoming Adaptable Futures book and an opportunity to present at our autumn conference in London. Outstanding submissions will also be published at www.adaptablefutures.com

The site can be anywhere – thus you are encouraged to ‘adapt’ your studio project to this competition – but the submission must meet the three criteria described in the brief. Entries can be at a building or neighbourhood scale, but should explain how your design (whether spatially,  structurally or in terms of building services) responds to the brief. Submissions will be accepted in two formats  – A0 boards (maximum 2) and/ or a film (maximum 3 minutes). Entrants may choose to submit one or both – all submissions should be digital.

The deadline for submissions is Sunday, 10 June 2012 (extended!) at 23:59 GMT.   For registration, submission and to download the competition brief please go to www.adaptablefutures.com/competition and follow us on Twitter for updates @adaptablefuture

UPDATE: The deadline has been extended to June 10, 2012.

SIGN UP NOW!
Sunday, June 10th, 2012 | 11am-1pm
Governors Island
$5 entry fee per person required (see below)
Registration Closes: June 8, 2012

Jury includes: Vito Acconci (Acconci Studio), David Benjamin (The Living), Scott Hughes (Robert Silman Associates), Cassim Shepard (Urban Omnibus), Mabel Wilson (Columbia GSAPP) and more.

SUPERFRONT is happy to announce that on Sunday, June 10th, 2012 SUPERFRONT will host a 2-hour design charrette for PUBLIC SUMMER: LIBRARY OF IMMEDIACY on Governors Island, in partnership with FIGMENT. SUPERFRONT’s PUBLIC SUMMER program offers young designers the opportunity to produce a temporary installation for public programming. PUBLIC SUMMER: LIBRARY OF IMMEDIACY will be open to the public on weekends from July 21st through September 23, 2012.

Unlike most competitions, the juried competition for the design of PUBLIC SUMMER: LIBRARY OF IMMEDIACY does not privilege designers who are able to dedicate more time or more resources to their competition entry. Designers only have the 2 hours on site at the charrette to draft their proposal. The goal is to hone in on concept and strategy, and to level the playing field for designers with minimal time to devote to unpaid competitive endeavors or with less sophisticated software or rendering tools.

On the day of the competition, participants will be handed a detailed brief for the LIBRARY OF IMMEDIACY, a semi-outdoor space to support a curated set of public activities on Governors Island. The selected team will have the opportunity to construct their design on Governors Island, in collaboration with SUPERFRONT and FIGMENT. Construction will be supported through donated materials from Materials For The Arts, other partners, and novice construction volunteers. Winners will be given an honorarium of $500 and a budget of $1500 for materials and construction. The temporary outdoor installation will open on July 21st and will run until September 23rd.

The charrette is aimed at (though not limited to) young designers five years or less out of school or under age 35. You may participate as an individual or as a team of up to four people. Please note that on Saturday, June 9, 2012 there will be a Public Summer site visit on Governors Island from 10am-2pm. SUPERFRONT staff will be there to answer any questions. All directions and detailed information will be emailed to registrants prior to June 9th.

Sonic Trace, a new media project and radio series, a direct result of KCRW’s Independent Producer Project, is bringing you stories that explore the three age-old questions about community and immigration — ¿Por qué te fuiste? ¿Por qué te quedaste? ¿Por qué regresaste? (Why did you leave? Why do you stay? Why do you go back?)

Which begs the next question: Why YOU?

A large part of Sonic Trace is recording stories. But, in order to record stories, we need a Sound Booth. And that’s where you come in to play! In partnership with KCRW program DnA and Producer/Host Frances Anderton, Sonic Trace is launching a Sound Booth Design Challenge! We need your help spreading the word about our challenge. We’ve got a tight budget, but that doesn’t mean we aren’t looking to build something special. We’re challenging designers, architects, builders… visionaries to create an intimate, inviting and innovative sound booth.

The booth will be traveling all over Los Angeles — to churches, food fairs and schools. To rock, jazz and cumbia concerts. We will be at the park, at the coffee shop and hanging at the tamale hot spots. We’ll be setting up and closing shop alongside food trucks and observing public transportation from bus stops and corner shops. You get the idea? These places will be noisy and hectic. So we’ll need a space of intimacy, reflection and “border-less-ness” for broadcast quality story-telling.(Think Story Corps with a KCRW edge, an angelino accent and a tale that starts or ends in far-off land).

The deadline for entry submissions is June 8th. More details on the design challenge can be found here!

OVERVIEW

Within the field of architecture, exploration involving parametric modeling and digital fabrication – what we will call computational fabrication – is both wide and varied. There is no standard of how the technology is developed or no singular focus on how it will impact the design process or the construction of buildings. And yet there is growing evidence the application is quickly evolving in a variety of unique directions. From novel geometries and innovative structures to improved material and environmental performance it is clear there is a focused agenda towards a more rigorous implementation of the digital toolset.

The impetus for this development is coming simultaneously from three positions that collectively provide a critical nexus in the field of computational fabrication: First, the professional demands for buildings to have greater performance capacity, stylistic coherence, and economic efficiency; second the academic realm where experimentation, research, and theory, continue to push technological exploration forward; and third, industry where innovative development is both an economic imperative and a generative vehicle for technical application and testing. From each of these positions, applied research is gaining traction as a critical and vital part of connecting the design process into a deeper knowledge base of information that is raising the intelligence and thus efficacy of architectural design. Whether following traditional models of research or pioneering new forms of hybridized working models between these three categories, those working within this field are now able to activate a broader and more fully coordinated spectrum of information about the design decision making process.

We seek research proposals that actively connect academia, the profession and the fabrication industry. As a center of gravity the proposals must illustrate work of designers who are forming an integrated relationship between disciplines in the area they practice and build. As this is a “design to fabricate” competition, TEX-FAB will match our network of fabricators and consultants with the projects that best manifest research through computational fabrication and apply it toward more intelligent integers of materiality and construction. Through a panel of experts we propose to identify projects that warrant a higher degree of realization and exhibit them to foster a discussion that engages an audience in our region and beyond. From this selection a final project will be selected and optimized with a team of experts for the purpose of full-scale production.

APPLIED is a two-stage international design competition established to foster the deeper developments within the field of computational fabrication. We are soliciting design proposals that further existing research, by enabling prototyping at a larger scale or full scale, and proposals to jumpstart new research and design concepts

CRITERIA

You are encouraged to submit your design proposal in either of two categories: Continuing Research or Speculative Proposals.

Continuing Research is a category that seeks to enable a more specific and regimented design research project already underway. Encompassing all works that are at a significant stage within their development that warrant a substantial shift in the scale and or material usage to further the research. This includes any and all previously funded work at any stage of development.

Speculative Proposals is a broad based category with the intent to kickstart a design research project. It is an open category and freely interpretable. New ideas, or concepts are welcome and present the entrant an opportunity to further develop their ‘flash of genius’. Furniture, structures, products or any other project qualifies for this category with or without a specific site. No previously funded research work may be submitted.

WINNERS + MENTIONS

APPLIED is a two-stage competition. In the first stage a total of 4 selections that will be awarded a 1000 USD stipend to further develop their project in a scale model (2 selections from the Continuing Research category and 2 from Speculative Proposals category). For the second stage, the models with revised boards will be juried in Dallas, Texas August 2012 (a shipping fee stipend of 250 USD will be provided) with the announcement of a winner made public in August 20.

The final winning entry will be built, exhibited in Dallas/ Ft. Worth, Texas for the 4th annual TEX-FAB event and subsequently given to the Winner. The design and fabrication of the piece will be commissioned by TEX-FAB with the support of our competition sponsors. No additional design fee will be paid, however a 1,500 USD stipend will be awarded for travel to Dallas/ Ft. Worth to partake in the installation of their work, present the design on the day of the opening. Approximate value of winning proposal in materials, fabrication and labor is set at 10,000 USD.

Honorable mentions will be awarded at the discretion of the Jury. All mentions will be exhibited at the APPLIED exhibition in San Antonio, Texas in April 2012 and the following year in Arlington, Texas February 2013.

REGISTRATION FEE

Continuing Research 100 USD per design proposal Speculative Proposal 100 USD per design proposal

Sukkahville 2012 Design Competition

Reimagining the Sukkah

Kehilla Residential Programme invites architects, students, artists, builders and allied design professionals to submit design proposals for the second annual Sukkahville Design Competition. The aim of this open competition is to design a temporary, free-standing Sukkah to be built in Mel Lastman Square in Toronto on the eve of the holiday of Sukkot. We encourage you to re-imagine the traditional notion of Sukkah, with a contemporary design language and approach.

Challenge

A Sukkah is a temporary structure constructed for use annually during the week-long Jewish festival of Sukkot. It is described in Leviticus as a symbolic wilderness shelter, symbolizing the frailty and transience of life. While building a Sukkah is a particular Jewish ritual observance, it represents many conceptual themes surrounding the essential nature of dwelling, which are universal in nature. Proposing an innovative Sukkah design which delicately balances the inherent dichotomies of new / old, open / closed, temporary /permanent is the challenge inherent in this competition. The temporary structure must adhere to the following traditional constraints:

  • The footprint of the sukkah must be no smaller than 27”x27”, but no larger than 100 square feet
  • The height of the Sukkah must be taller than 38” high, and no taller than 30’0”
  • The Sukkah must have a minimum of two walls, with a partial third wall at least as wide as a single hand span.
  • The roof of the Sukkah must be made of some form of natural materials. During the day it must provide more shade than sunlight. During the evening, the stars must be visible at night from within the Sukkah. Large roof openings are inconsistent with the sheltering quality of a Sukkah.
  • The roof must not be comprised of and must be fully detached from any living tree, branch or plant.
  • Roof material may not be tightly secured with wire. Metal roof supports may not be used to support the roof material.
  • Wall materials are not limited, and pieces of the wall can be spaced up to a maximum of one foot apart.
  • Walls must be sturdy enough to withstand a steady wind.
  • While the Sukkah must be built anew each year, a sustainable design approach, which minimizes the
  • waste and disposal of the Sukkah materials is strongly encouraged.
  • The Sukkah may not be anchored to the site, but must be stabilized or weighed down without penetrating or damaging the hard surfaces or exceeding the maximum permitted footprint.

Recognition

Five winning designs will be chosen by a select high profile jury to be constructed in a visionary village on Mel Lastman Square from September 29 to October 1, 2012. Finalists will be notified by August 15, 2012 and will be responsible for obtaining construction materials and constructing their designs. A stipend of $3,600 per winning design will be awarded to assist with construction, materials and transportation costs.

Submission

Sukkahville Competition submissions must be received by 12:00:00 EST on August 1, 2012 to the office address listed below. One single board size ARCH D (36" x 24") per entry will be accepted. The presentation layout and technique is absolutely open and at the discretion of the entrant. The presentation should clearly document the proposed design as well as the approach to the construction. Presentation boards should be completely anonymous. Please tape a single, sealed, letter-sized envelope to the back of the board containing the name and contact information of the entrant. Entrants must register by June 1, 2012; please send an email with your name or names of team members to info@sukkahville.com.

Mary Porta’s Review of British High Streets spells out the crisis point that Britain’s town centres have reached and the urgency by which we have to act if this social and cultural asset is to be protected from irreperable decline. Whilst Portas report was being written, a new culture started to emerge in the shadows of Europe's largest indoor shopping centre, in East London. Waltham Forest Council commissioned a group of forward-thinking designers to revive the local high streets. 2 years on, the spiral of decline has been reversed. Here, amongst shopkeepers, pavement cafes and family-run businesses, Waltham Forest Council are investing to breath new life into the heart of the local retail community. So far we have seen the installation of jolly new shopfronts, colourful facades, magic animated lighting and elegantly paved trottoirs as a backdrop to the lively bustle of the high street. Businesses have started to invest in their retail outlets again and locals have a renewed sense of civic pride. In a final push to prepare the neighbourhood for the London Olympics, we are now looking for some aspirational young designers to help us complete the task.

Call for Papers: Terrain Vague: The Interstitial as Site, Concept, Intervention

This collection of essays will focus on terrain vaguemarginal, semi-abandoned space in or along the edge of the cityas abstract concept, specific locale, and subject of literary, architectural, or otherwise artistic intervention.

Ignasi de Solà-Morales defines terrain vague as land in a potentially exploitable state but already possessing some definition to which we are external, or strange places that exist outside the citys effective circuits and productive structures (119, 120). Gil Doron similarly defines landscapes of transgression as derelict sites where nature has started to reconstruct the built or (now) ruined environment. . . . space[s] that opened in the dichotomy of what we perceive as city and nature (255).

We are particularly interested in responses to the idea, as expressed by Luc Lévesque, that terrain vague offers a counterpoint to the way order and consumption hold sway over the city. Offering room for spontaneous, creative appropriation and informal uses that would otherwise have trouble finding a place in public spaces subjected increasingly to the demands of commerce, the terrain vague is the ideal place for a certain resistance to emerge, a place potentially open to alternative ways of experiencing the city.

We invite submissions from a range of fields, in particular literature, architecture, ecocriticism, urban studies, cultural geography, the visual arts, and film studies. Suggested topics may include:

Site and situation
Forms of documentation
Contextual definitions/theorizations
Urban wilds
Transgression and recreation
Urban natural history
Environmental justice
Interventions

Please send abstracts of 300 to 500 words, accompanied by a brief bio, to site.situation@gmail.com. Inquiries are welcome.

The deadline for abstracts is 1 June 2010.
Completed essays will be due on 1 February 2011.

Urbanite Project 2012: Healthy Food Challenge seeks ideas for transforming Baltimore into a healthy city. Specifically, we’re seeking creative, innovative, non-traditional ideas that address one or more of the barriers to affordable, healthy food for Baltimore City residents living in food deserts.

Barriers to healthy food for people living in food deserts include, but are not limited to:

  • Transportation
  • A lack of healthy food at nearby stores
  • A lack of healthy food options at such charitable organizations as soup kitchens, food pantries, etc.
  • Education—a lack of knowledge about which foods are healthiest, how to prepare them, etc.
  • A lack of food preparation appliances, equipment
  • Time—for example, a single parent working multiple jobs has limited time to shop for and prepare healthy food.
  • Cost of healthy food

Baltimore City Food Policy Recommendations

In 2010, the Baltimore City Food Policy Task Force came up with the following guidelines to work toward increasing access to healthy food in food deserts:

  1. Promote and expand farmers markets
  2. Support community gardens and urban agriculture
  3. Expand supermarket home delivery program
  4. Develop a targeted marketing campaign to encourage healthy eating among all Baltimoreans
  5. Support street vending of healthy foods
  6. Promote and expand community supported agriculture
  7. Support a central kitchen model for schools
  8. Support research on food deserts and collaboration with policy makers
  9. Improve the food environment around schools and recreation centers
  10. Create healthy food zoning requirements or incentives

Urbanite Project 2012: Healthy Food Challenge is open to any individual, group, organization, or company. This is a blind competition. Professional qualifications are not required; anyone with an engaging, creative, and unique idea for increasing access to healthy, affordable food in Baltimore’s food deserts is encouraged to submit a proposal.

Submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:

  • Proposal must be mounted on a single 24” x 30” board (foam core, chipboard, or similar material). Applicants should use a combination of text and no fewer than three images (renderings, drawings, photographs, diagrams, etc.) to convey their concept. Text must not exceed 500 words and must include as many details as possible about the project, including time frame for implementing the proposal, materials, dimensions, etc.
  • Include names, affiliations, and a short biography of team member(s), along with team contact email, address, and phone number, on the back of the board. This information should not be visible on the front of the board.
  • Mail or hand-deliver board to:

Reality Cues is about making architecture in digital, interactive, and social media, where ownership is communal and subject matter changes as quickly as users can click the 'share' button. Within this culture of reposting, reblogging, and retweeting is the opportunity to modify and subvert prevailing tendencies. Combine this with the ease with which anyone can alter images to create virtual worlds, and you are left with an increasingly fuzzy area between the so-called virtual and real. The !!!!!!!!! Competition looks to accelerate this process to see just how fuzzy we can get.

Background

Tablet was founded in the year 2000 by Laurent Vernhes and Michael Davis, a pair of new-media veterans who were tired of predictable chain hotels and faceless hotel search engines. On the principle that today’s traveler needs fewer choices, not more, they set out to create a tightly curated list, showcasing only the hotels that matter — hotels with personality, hotels that obsess on the details, hotels where experience beats economy. That list, after a decade of evolution, makes up the selection of TabletHotels.com, the trusted source for extraordinary hotels around the world.

The natural next step, of course, is to open a hotel. Tablet’s hotel would be up for a conceptual challenge, tackling what might be hospitality’s hardest problem: creating a hotel that brings people together — where experience is shared, friendships are born, business contacts are established, and real human connections are made, all under the hotel’s roof.

Objective

Create a hotel that connects travelers and locals.

We are proposing an architectural challenge, but also an experiment in human psychology. While entrants need not confine their solutions to physical space alone — there are technological ways of making connections as well — the focal point should be the place (or places) where hotel guests and city residents are brought together.

Think beyond the typical lobby bar, restaurant or pool deck, and draw inspiration from your own travels to design a space with the potential to revolutionize the ordinary hotel experience.

Open Agenda is an annual competition aimed at supporting a new generation of experimental architecture. Open to recent graduates, Open Agenda is focused on developing the possibilities of design research in architecture and the built environment.

This national competition is intentionally broad in its scope, and dedicated to fostering new discussions on architecture in the public realm. An initiative of the School of Architecture at UTS, past winners have been graduates from Australian and New Zealand universities including, Sydney University, RMIT, Canberra University, UTS and Victoria University in Wellington, exploring a broad range of topics relevant to current Architecture discourse in Australia.

The Opportunity

Proposals that explore new forms of media and communication in this context are welcome.

Graduates from a professional Australian or New Zealand degree in architecture in the last ten years (including and after 2002) are invited to submit a proposal.

The Reward

Three proposals will be awarded seed funding of $2000 for development of their research proposal towards a publication and a public exhibition in Sydney in 2012 at Sydney Customs House to coincide with the Sydney Architecture Festival. Circle:

The Greek pre-Socratic philosopher Empedocles described the nature of God as a circle of which the center is everywhere and the circumference is nowhere, a sentiment echoed two millennia later by French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal in his depiction of nature as an infinite sphere. Indeed, the notion of circle has been everpresent since the dawn of recorded history and in the dark unknown preceding that dawn. It can be expressed mathematically and utilized technologically, but conceptually its ecumenical nature touches the spiritual, the poetic, the atavistic. As Helena P. Blavatsky states in Secret Doctrine:

“…the primordial form of everything manifested, om atom to globe, om man to angel, is circular, spheroidalhaving been with every nation the emblem of eternity and infinity— the serpent swallowing its own tail. To realize the meaning, however, the sphere must be thought of as seen om its center. The field of vision or of thought, is like a sphere whose radii proceed om one’s self in every direction and extend out into space, opening up boundless vistas all around.”

The editorial staff of Lantern has chosen “circle” as the theme for our second issue, to be released on the Summer solstice. The circle is a form, but when taken as thematic undertone, quite formless. The idea of circle as theme could be, and in fact is encouraged to be, taken in as many directions, through as many mediums, and as many nuances as possible. We do not mean to imply nuance as edict, but rather as an encouraged permissiveness made express. As in art and literature, theme may be express or implied, and we do not require submissions to be images of circles or direct discussions of such. Although your interpretation of “circle” may be direct, abstract, or in-between, your contribution may be just the connection we are seeking.

We encourage you to submit your work to Lantern: poetry, short fiction, essays, images, music, academic pieces, we want it all. We are interested in thought and expression and connection, and we don’t much care what forms those things come in. We will value your work for its strength of character and for its contribution to something better. Please view the theme of circle as you wish—creatively or destructively, literally or figuratively—and feel free to wander off om its center point as we walk beyond the lantern’s glow to the endarkened places where academic and other such publications stop. Ultimately we hope Lantern will challenge its readers to find the common thread among the images, words, and thoughts, and that its contributors will, as Salvatore Quasimodo penned, challenge “the existing cultural order by attempt[ing] to break through the circle of artistic castes to reach the center.”

Now through May 18, 2012, applications are being accepted. Entrants must submit an original building design with four (4) elevations[MD1]  rendered in color, and may submit one (1) additional drawing of their choice. The project must include the exterior trim system specified for Andersen A-Series or 400 Series products.  See the official rules for details.[MD2]

Andersen’s new Exterior Trim System makes installation a snap. Can you imagine installing finished trim on an average house in just half a day and never touching it again? Sound too good to be true? Not anymore.

The Andersen trim system saves time on the jobsite because it can be ordered along with the windows and arrives ready for installation. Available completely assembled and finished for most windows and in pre-cut kits for patio doors, the Andersen Exterior Trim System makes measuring, cutting, filling nail holes and painting a thing of the past. Installation takes as little as five minutes for an exceptional fit and lasting finish. It’s made of Fibrex composite material, which is highly sustainable, low maintenance and virtually impervious to water. In addition, it installs independently of the window or door’s water management system. Trim is available in 11 colors and a range of architectural styles.

Proposal

At ArchMedium we would like to propose a project that will help us rediscover our primitive instincts. We want to create a bond again with Mother Nature. We want to reestablish the ancient connection between Man and the glories of His planet. This is an experience that too frequently eludes us in our contemporary, urban lifestyles.

What we want to create is a Northern Lights observatory located in one of the most extreme latitudes inhabited by Man, surrounded by lush, endless forests and nature in its purest form. A place where one can retreat for a few days to completely disconnect from the daily routine and plunge headfirst into a world of observation, relaxation, and learning.

The Site

Rovaniemi is the ideal location for such a project. Located in the icy curls of the Arctic Circle, this capital of the Finnish Lapland is not only the final stop north on the Finnish railway system, but is also the supposed hometown of Santa Claus! And best of all…the Northern Lights are visible in Rovaniemi up to 200 nights per year.

Urban areas are quickly becoming the densest concentrations of human life on the planet and with that comes the well documented positive and negative impacts to local biodiversity and ecologies. But humans are not the only urban animals - squirrels, pigeons, mice, rats, crows, raccoons, beetles etc... are all species identified as synanthropes - animals that “live near, and benefit from, an association with humans and the somewhat artificial habitats that humans create around them.” These are highly-urbanized non-human animals and our potential design partners. Expanded hetero-cultures, urban agriculture, and a flexible, more resilient urbanism are all potential benefits of cross species collaborations. What other benefits exist?

SUBMIT YOUR PROJECT!

Animal Architecture wants your ideas about how synanthropic design can reshape, expand and redefine the context of urban thought and space. Submissions can include past work, current research and built or unbuilt projects. Projects should focus on solving, addressing or proposing urban issues and must actively incorporate at least one, if not more non-human design partners. Winning entries will be announced mid summer 2012 and will be eligible for publication and exhibition. Details to follow.

Register: May 13th 2012
Submissions: June 11th 2012
Cost: $35.00 USD for currently enrolled students, $100.00 for Professionals.

Speculative narrative and the potential of imagination are important factors in creative production.  It is considered that a multitude of small stories are the “quintessential form of imaginative invention1”.

Speculation through narrative offers an apparatus through which we may investigate the concept of ‘reality’. Immersed within our current understandings, speculation is influenced by our contemporary condition. In these fictional dispositions, the variables and constraints of ‘reality’ can be controlled, omitted completely or utilized as key motives for the foundations of new territories.

Speculative Narrative can be an exploration of idealistic scenarios, the fossilization of information, or the creation of fantastical realms.

This allows the model of design to move beyond problem solving, crisis management and project liberation from the constraints of our existence. The augmentation through speculative narrative, enables the reshaping of current processes, understandings and disciplines.

Speculative Narrative makes it possible to redefine ‘present’ and ‘future’.

Dotting the global landscape, decommissioned military installations are leaving their mark – symbols of triumph, pride, pain and the unforeseen consequences of military aggression. These abandoned structures and ghost towns disrupt neighborhoods and split entire communities.

Architecture for Humanity is hosting the 2011 Open Architecture Challenge – [un]restricted access – a design competition that will re-envision the future of decommissioned military space. This is an open invite to the global design and construction community to identify retired military installations in their own backyard, to collaborate with local stakeholders, and to reclaim these spaces for social, economic, and environmental good.

The Challenge

The Open Architecture Challenge reaches beyond traditional bounds of architecture by challenging designers and architects to partner with community groups and to develop together innovative solutions that improve the built environment.

The 2011 Open Architecture Challenge invites architects, designers and creatives around the world to re-design retired military sites. This competition asks designers to partner with communities surrounding these former places of conflict to transform hostile, and oftentimes painful, locations into sites where groups can create civic change.

How Many Decommissioned Sites are There?

Good question. Help us build a global count of decommissioned military sites. Click here to add a site to the map. They can be any kind from any place.

The only rule is: It must be an abandoned, closed or decommissioning military site.

We are asking you to work on a site near you but it you can't find one, you can choose one of the following:

Site 1: Guantanamo Bay Detention Center, Guantánamo Bay (Cuba)* Gitmo Here
Site 2: NSA "East Bank", New Orleans, LA (USA)
Site 3: Johnston Atoll, Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument
Site 4: Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS), Tustin, CA (USA)
Site 5: Flak Towers, Vienna (Austria)

*Currently not decommissioned yet scheduled for closure.

Why This Challenge

Every other year, Architecture for Humanity's Open Architecture Challenge brings international attention to issues in the built environment affecting the health, prosperity and well being of under-served communities. The Open Architecture Challenge will focus on helping communities reclaim abandoned, closed and decommissioned military sites.

Few places on earth are void of defense infrastructure. Military bases have been identified in more than 100 countries and territories worldwide. Even Antarctica is home to at least three military installations. Built in the service of public protection, when these spaces become inactive and no longer serve their intended use, how can they be re-enlisted for civilian purposes?

This year marks a milestone: In the United States alone more than 235 military sites are scheduled for closure or realignment. The U.S. military is under orders to downsize 5% of its entire infrastructure on or before September 15, 2011 in accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) ruling. The ruling will force the relocation of more than 125,000 military personnel and their families.

Base closures have a huge adverse affect on the surrounding community. In addition to complex environmental remediation, civilians must address the consequences of unemployment and disinvestment. According to the final report submitted to the President of the United States, BRAC estimates that 12 million square feet of leased space will be vacated resulting in the loss of an estimated 18,000 civilian jobs in this round of closures alone. Interestingly, many of these same sites are for sale.

Decommissioned military sites have tremendous potential if impediments to access can be overcome. This open, international competition will invite designers to identify an inactive military installation in or near their community and develop a design concept and plan for it’s remediation and re-use.

Three designs will place and one design will be awarded the prestigious Founders Award. All of the entries will be available for download on the Open Architecture Network, an online community developed by Architecture for Humanity to provide open source access to design solutions. By sharing design solutions—including CAD files—freely, we aim to give communities around the world the ideas and tools they need to make decisions where it matters most—locally.

'Take Your Base' and Sponsorship Opportunities

We're continuing our recruitment of individuals and organizations who are ready to accept the mission of sponsoring the complex yet rewarding task of successfully transforming previously conflicted sites into civic spaces. If you are ready to enlist your financial resources in service of this greater good, please give us a call at 415.963.3511 or send us an email to challenge_at_architectureforhumanty.org

About the Open Architecture Challenge

The Challenge is hosted once every two years on the Open Architecture Network, an open-source community developed by Architecture for Humanity. Design teams from all over the world compete to design and build the winning scheme. Support from sponsors and implementing partners funds the construction of selected designs. All of the designs are shared freely via the Open Architecture Network and made available for future use.

SPRING ISSUE THEME: 'PROCESS'     CALL FOR PAPERS
FORWARD 112 will explore the design process.   Designers often look outside our own profession to technology, literature, culture, science and engineering to find inspiration.  We invent, innovate, and challenge the status quo.  In this issue of Forward we would like to understand the possibilities for discovery.  We will explore how designers balance intuitive inspiration and rational analysis, how we recognize patterns and points of connection.  FORWARD 112 will include architectural, artistic, and scientific discussions as well as historical and critical analyses. Topics can consider scales from environmental explorations, urban approaches, buildings, façades, and details.  Project-specific discussions should bridge the practical and abstract by describing the conceptual framework and how it translates into a project’s planning, form and details. Research, as well as artistic and scientific discussions may move between a variety of discourses including contemporary art, journalism, history, economics, politics and culture.
