13.3% is an exasperated reply to those who say, ‘there are no women making architecture’

Just over thirteen percent of architects are women, according to the American Institute of Architects.

The exhibition "13.3%..." borrows from the conceptual structure of curator Lucy Lippard's landmark 1973 exhibition of conceptual art, “c. 7,500,” in which each work on display fit into a standard manila envelope. Lippard's exhibition contested the belief that there were no women making conceptual art at the time – and she did so by mailing evidence of this work directly to the gallery for display.
Almost forty years later, "13.3%..." provides a space and form in which to consider the contributions and visibility of today’s practicing female architects.

This open-call exhibition solicits responses to a central question: "What does it mean to be 13.3 percent?" Exasperated replies in any form (drawings, writing, videos, artifacts, etc.) will be exhibited in the Project Space at WUHo (Woodbury Hollywood Exhibitions in Hollywood, California) from December 2010 to January 2011.

There is but one rule: materials must fit into a standard 9X12-inch manila envelope postmarked by November 10, 2010.

The legal: Your submissions to the exhibition may take any form as long as materials arrive to the gallery in a standard 9x12-inch manila envelope. Please send submission to the address below by November 10, 2010. Your submission to “13.3%” and responses may be displayed in WUHO, on the gallery's website, published, or used for promotion of the exhibition. Unfortunately, submissions cannot be returned. The myth of the male or female "architect" has gone on too long. It is perpetuated by those who are ignorant as to how the profession works, and how the professionals interact. It is not the same as the writer who goes to his cabin and writes a novel and returns three months later with a finished piece.

There is no such thing as THE architect- the name on the letterhead is usually the face of the firm, and his main role, without which the firm could not survive, is marketing. The creative and production group happily sits behind the scenes; designing, documenting, researching codes, and dealing with the construction industry.

I wasn't around then, but I hear Walter Gropius was instrumental in introducing the team approach to architecture- first at the Bauhaus and later at Harvard. It's been 80 years.

The fact is projects are designed and documented by TEAMS, not by one gender or the other. My last project, for instance, was designed primarily by me, critiqued by two white men from Georgia and one from Ohio, and documented by a Peruvian male, a Colombian male, a Colombian female, and a Miami female. I am a Cuban born male who became a naturalized American years ago.

Please stop writing about architecture unless you are IN IT. Your oversimplification is disconcerting and a little embarrassing.

@alberto
I think you missed the point. Everyone knows that one person is not responsible for the realization of ANY substantial building. I guess you are suggesting that all architects before Walter Gropius generated buildings with one hand, I'm afraid you are mistaken. Gropius nor your or anyones nationality has a place in this discussion. It is truly your generation of architects that is holding up our profession and your stance is a little disconcerting and a little embarrassing.
