CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
INTERNATIONAL ARCHITECTURAL COMPETITION

The Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec (MNBAQ) wishes to build a new pavilion on a site adjacent to its present complex on the Plains of Abraham in the heart of Quebec City. In order to choose the most significant project, it is organising an international architectural competition under the aegis of the Ordre des architectes du Québec (OAQ) and the government of Quebec. This competition will observe the OAQ’s Guide des concours d’architecture with respect to both the manner in which it is held and its rules for fairness. The firm chosen to carry out the mandate must in addition conform to Quebec legislation, with respect in particular to that concerning the exercise of the architectural profession. The construction of a new pavilion for the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec promises to be decisive both for its intrinsic novelty and for its opening onto the urban space of the Grande Allée. The MNBAQ is looking for an unhesitatingly contemporary gesture which will transcend the heritage nature of its environment. When the project is complete, the Museum will be notable for having architectural components dating from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. In this context, the new pavilion will enable the institution to enter the future by combining cutting-edge technology and a sustainable development approach. Architectural firms with experience in a related field who wish to meet the challenge launched by the MNBAQ can obtain all the information necessary to participate in the competition at the web site http://www.mnba.qc.ca. The competition will be held in French, the official language of Quebec.

Deadline for the submission of candidacies is 21 August 2009 at 3:00 p.m., local time

eVolo - 2010 SKYSCRAPER COMPETITION
http://www.evolo-arch.com

eVolo – to study, to develop, to evolve, to fly away…

The launch of eVolo Magazine is a step closer to our objective to provide a forum for showcasing the most innovative, the most avant-garde designs that will define architecture in this century.

After several years of organizing the annual Skyscraper Competition it has become a renowned architectural prize around the world. The best projects of each competition are widely published from architecture, design, and fashion publications to technology, business, and entertainment magazines. The winning projects are also featured in websites, television documentaries, and galleries.

We would like to invite students and professional architects, engineers, and designers to take part in the 2010 Skyscraper Competition.  The main idea of this contest is to examine the relationship between the skyscraper and the natural world, the skyscraper and the community and the skyscraper and urban living.

In the last few years we have seen hundreds of new skyscrapers been developed around the world without careful consideration to the context or environment. There is a constant lack of urban planning and poor architectural design without intellectual or perceptual enjoyment. The aim of the competition is to push our imagination to redefine the term skyscraper through the use of new materials, technology, aesthetics, programs, and spatial organizations. Globalization, environmental warming, flexibility, adaptability, and the digital revolution are just some of the multi-layered elements that should be taken in consideration.

There are no restrictions in regards to site, program or size. The objective is to provide maximum freedom to propose the most innovative projects for this fascinating architectural genre. Ultimately, the designs should help the environment, restructure our cities and improve our way of life. Immediate

The Steering Committee for the Northern Ontario School of Architecture (NOSOA) is pleased to announce an Ideas competition:
What could a School of Architecture be?  Ideas for a new school in Northern Ontario.

Led by the NOSOA Steering Committee in partnership with the City of Greater Sudbury and WoodWORKS! (CWC), this competition challenges entrants to consider:

How can a new school of architecture collaborate and contribute to a culturally diverse community while providing an innovative and globally competitive education?

This competition is intended to generate ideas which push the envelope, questioning the roles of schools of architecture.  What are the physical characteristics?  What are the more abstract, theoretical ones?  How can this new school satisfy the unique nature of Northern Ontario?

There are two distinct aspects proposed for NOSOA that should be carefully considered.  First, it will be providing a dual-stream education – students can study in either English or in French.  The second is that NOSOA will deeply engage with, and learn from, the First Nation communities which comprise a large portion of Northern Ontario.  Beyond those two stipulations, this competition has purposefully ignored setting strict design guidelines in order to allow entrants the complete freedom to generate their own, unique ideas.  It is up to each team to interpret their response.

Teams can consist of 1 to 4 people.  Non-architecture students are welcome to enter the competition but each team must contain at least one person either currently enrolled in, or have graduated from an accredited school of architecture (proof of enrolment or graduation will be required).

The top three projects will be awarded the following:
Top Team $5,000   1st Runner-up $3,000   2nd Runner-up $2,000

The jury will be comprised of prominent academics and professionals in the field of design, architecture, architectural theory, and urban design.

Anne Cormier / Director, School of Architecture Université de Montréal
Craig Dykers / Senior Partner, Snøhetta AS
Dominic Giroux / President, Laurentian University
Douglas Cardinal / Douglas Cardinal Architect Inc.

Proposals will be exhibited in the downtown of the Greater Sudbury and online at http://www.nosoa.ca.  Entrants will have the option of presenting and discussing their work as part of a symposium hosted by the Northern Ontario School of Architecture which will be taking place at the end of October, 2009.

Those participating should email the following information (for each team member) to (JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
