LONDONERS are being asked to reinvent the capital’s skyline in a new competition that could net them a £1,000 prize.
The winning artwork will also be used on a range of merchandise, including Oyster wallets, mugs and t-shirts, that will go on sale during The London Architecture Festival - 19 June to 4 July.
Transport for London (TfL) has teamed up with the festival for the competition called: ‘A New London Skyline’.
Entrants have to create a modern take on London’s silhouette, and illustrate the city’s architectural heritage.
Any view of the capital can be chosen as long as it is recognisable as London but the design should appeal to both locals and visitors.
All kinds of media and technology can be used.
The theme of the festival this year is ‘the welcoming city’ which references the Olympic slogan; ‘London welcomes the world’.
David Ellis, head of Intellectual Property Development for TfL, said: ‘Transport for London has a long-standing reputation for excellent design and architecture, from the work of Charles Holden in the 1930s to the award winning architecture on the Jubilee line extension.
‘This competition represents a great opportunity for designers, artists or creative members of the public to express what London means to them.’
The panel of judges include: Lynda Relph-Knight, editor for Design Week; Michael Walton, head of trading for London Transport Museum; Rachel Halliburton, deputy editor for TimeOut; Saskia Boersma,
brand manager for TfL and Moira Lascelles, consultant curator for the festival.
How to enter
The competition is open to over-18s and the winning design must assign copyright to TfL.
Entrants should submit designs as jpegs at 300dpi, no larger than 1MB, and make sure the design is scalable to any size.
Designs should be emailed to [email protected] before 9am on Monday, May 24 2010.
