THE FINE ARTS PALACE: 1914-2014
The Fine Arts Palace is in Donostia, Navarre. In 1813, during the Peninsular War, the old city of Donostia was completely burnt. This led to a long reconstruction phase. Firstly, between 1813 and 1863, the old destroyed city was rebuilt. Secondly, between the years 1864 and 1914, the city’s walls were demolished and the new Kortazahar’s Extension was built.
In 1914, the building of the Fine Arts Palace gave a proper urban ending to Kortazahar’s Extension. This building that recalls the Gaumont Palace of Paris is one of the oldest cinemas in Navarre and in Europe. In the same way, it is a main example of Donostia’s eclectic architectural heritage. Sadly, this building that is located in the city centre has been abandoned since the 1990s.
AIM
In this 100th anniversary of the Fine Arts Palace, this 2nd Architectural Competition is a competition of ideas for the building’s future. The New Fine Arts Palace must retake its architectural value, its strategic urban position and its sociocultural functionality. Even more, the building must be adapted for the Cybernetic Era. The 21st century Donostia demands a New Fine Arts Palace.
Refurbish.
Reurbanize.
Reprogram.
FORMAT
The projects will be presented in a single landscape DIN-A3 panel. Each participant is responsible for choosing which information they include in their panel. The representation technique is completely free (2D drawings, pictures of models, sketches, renders, collages, etc.). An explanatory text is optional. The project title or slogan must be placed in the right-bottom corner of the panel and will be used for its identification.
