Window Display Competition

Registration Deadline:  Thursday, Dec 3, 20098 AMEDT

Submission Deadline:  Saturday, Dec 5, 20091 AMEDT

Introduction : stimulus
Light as stimulus. Light is a material of many faces, that can fulfill many roles when used to enrich the built space and the urban realm. Ephemerally light can inspire, create ambiance, and affect emotions, while physically it can improve sight, denote importance, and provide guidance. More often than not light in some way touches on both of these in intentional and unintentional ways. Using light in design is a
difficult task as it has many unpredictable and uncontrollable aspects. Manipulating light is similar to a complex puzzle, as every move has increased side effects, which is why light is such an excitement. Entrants for this year’s Window Display Competition are welcome to embrace the exploration of light’s many faces in order to create light as stimulus that will leave impressions on those who see it in the urban context and influence the surrounding environment. Concepts should explore both the technical and ephemeral aspects of light. Saturation, contrast, color, and viewing scale should also be considered.

Eligibility
The competition is open to all students, designers, architects, light designers,
artists, engineers, etc. Participants may work individually or as part of a team.
Multidisciplinary teams are encouraged and only one entry is permitted per
team.

Requirements
Entrants to this year’s Associate AIA Window Display Competition are encouraged. Installation designs must explore multiple uses for Artemide’s light fixtures and will be judged on the design’s ability to integrate Artemide’s fixtures with the entrant’s concept for light as stimulus. The installation should be appropriately sized to accommodate a 12’-0” X 5’-0” X 10’-0” volume of space on the interior face of
the north showroom window and fit through a 6’-0” X 8’-0” door. No alteration to the existing structure will be permitted. No attachments to the interior flooring will be permitted. Anchors, attachments, or supports on interior walls or ceiling must be of a temporary nature. The construction budget is limited to $1250 and shall not be exceeded.

Submission
No registration fee to enter. Please register with name and e-mail address at [email protected] to receive a registration number. Entries are to be a single 24” x 36” board, mounted on foamcore, oriented in either portrait or landscape. Write the registration number in the upper right corner on the back of the board. Deliver the submission to the Center for Architecture, 1218 Arch Street. Philadelphia, PA 19107.

Jury
Jurors will be announced in October. Jury will take place in December of 2009.
