FAKRO, global roof window manufacturer, and A10 new European architecture invite architects worldwide to take part in the international design competition FAKRO inspires – Space for new visions. The topic of this year's competition is a 100% smart design for (part of) a building, site or neighbourhood that explores the feasible inclusion of new technologies and circular flows (materials, food, work, energy, water, and so on). In the proposal, the use of three products that FAKRO offers is mandatory (including roof windows, flat roof windows, loft ladders, and accessories for windows). The design should be functional, energy-efficient, full of light, user-friendly, and fully blend in with its surroundings.
The jury consists of Sabina Sujew (FAKRO Benelux), Maarten Gielen (Rotor) and Indira van ‘t Klooster (editor-in-chief, A10 new European architecture).
‘We are past the time that an architect can say, “my building is well insulated, so it is sustainable,”’ says Maarten Gielen, founder of Rotor and jury member of this year’s edition of FAKRO’s design competition. ‘Equally important is how you position yourself as a company. Energy efficiency alone is no longer enough. It’s not about the evolution of triple- to five-double glazing. The question that applies to every business is: How does it relate to the social debate? Does it behave as a responsible global citizen? The concept of sustainability now requires a political interpretation.’ [read the full interview here: http://www.a10.eu/news/meanwhile/fakro-inspires-a-conversation-with-maarten-gielen.html]
The winner of FAKRO inspires – Space for new visions will be awarded a prize of €5000, second prize is €3000, and third prize €2000. Projects must be submitted between 1 February and 2 June 2015.
Everyone who enters the competition will be invited to the award ceremony in Poland in early 2016. This offers a great chance to see the other entries, and meet other architects and the jury. For this four-day event, FAKRO offers a varied programme that includes visiting historical sites, winter activities like tobogganing, snow trikes, quad riding and more, as well as a lively evening programme and a visit the FAKRO headquarters and factory.
